Sharjah Department of Culture unveils 2025 cultural programme

Under the esteemed patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, the Sharjah Department of Culture continues to lead the way in cultural and intellectual development with its ambitious 2025 programme. Announcing the plans, His Excellency Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Owais, Chairman of the Sharjah Department of Culture, highlighted how the Ruler's vision has transformed Sharjah into a beacon of knowledge and culture, thanks to a diverse range of cultural initiatives and events. Celebrating creativity and honouring achievements On 9 April 2025, the Sharjah Cultural Honouring Forum will mark its 21st edition in Egypt, recognising distinguished Arab figures who have made lasting contributions to Arab culture. Later, on 14-15 April, the 28th Sharjah Award for Arab Creativity – First Work will take place, cementing its reputation as a leading literary prize and a unique platform for discovering young talents. A Month of festivals and artistic expression In May 2025, the 6th Tetouan Festival for Moroccan Poets will run from 9 to 11 May, while the 12th Sharjah School Theatre Festival will be held from 12 to 15 May, nurturing young theatrical talents through workshops, lectures, and performances. The 8th Dibba Al-Hisn Theatre Festival for Two-Person Plays is set for 23 to 27 May. Meanwhile, Amman, Jordan will host the 22nd edition of the Sharjah Cultural Honouring Forum on 28 May 2025. Supporting the arts and fostering critical thought The 16th Sharjah Award for Arab Poetry Criticism and the Sharjah Award for Arab Visual Arts Criticism, titled Inspiration of Arab Heritage in Contemporary Arab Visual Art, will also be launched. The latter remains unique in the Arab world, focusing on critical art discussions led by Arab writers, critics, and academics. Year-round cultural engagements The Sharjah Department of Culture will continue its extensive cultural initiatives, hosting poetry evenings and literary seminars at the House of Poetry, Al Hirah Literary Council, Khorfakkan Literary Council, and Kalba Literary Council. The Arabic Calligraphy Centre in the Calligraphy Square will continue to offer specialised workshops, promoting the art of Arabic calligraphy and cultural heritage.

'Sports before Iftar' programme One of the standout features of the gathering is the "Sports before Iftar" programme, which allows participants to engage in physical activity in a Ramadan-friendly environment. The initiative encourages exercise before Iftar time, promoting healthy habits and a balanced lifestyle during the fasting month. Annual volleyball tournament The annual volleyball tournament also adds excitement to the gathering, with teams engaging in lively competition. This tournament brings a distinct sports atmosphere to the Ramadan nights, contributing to the festive spirit of the season. Quran competition On the cultural front, the Al Dhaid Quran Competition holds a significant place in the gathering. It continues to be a success, attracting participants from various age groups. The competition fosters a spirit of healthy rivalry in the recitation and memorisation of the Holy Quran, helping to instil its noble teachings and values among the younger generation. Shooting championship: a revived tradition The shooting championship is another key highlight of the event, with a broad participation, particularly from senior citizens and young people. The competition offers an opportunity to revive a sporting tradition that emphasises precision and focus, set against the backdrop of the Ramadan challenge. A reflection of community values His Excellency Salem Mohammed bin Huwaiden Al Ketbi, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Al Dhaid Club, stated that the Ramadan Gathering is a prime example of the community role played by sports clubs, in line with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah. He explained that the activities hosted by the club contribute to fostering a dynamic environment where culture and sport come together, promoting intergenerational communication in a setting of goodwill and brotherhood that aligns with the values of Ramadan. Gratitude for Supporters of the Gathering Khalifa Mubarak bin Dalmouk Al Ketbi, Chairman of the Cultural Committee at Al Dhaid Club, praised the vital role the gathering plays in attracting diverse segments of society through activities that encourage both personal growth and healthy competition. He expressed gratitude for the support from the Sharjah Sports Council, the Sharjah Quranic Foundation, and all other supportive organisations, whose contributions have ensured the continued success of this distinguished annual event.

He also highlighted the municipality's commitment to working with local and international organisations to support people of determination in achieving their aspirations within an enabling and sustainable environment. Al Shamsi expressed his appreciation to Dr Tariq Sultan bin Khadim, Vice President of the World Union of the Disabled, for his efforts in advocating for inclusive environments and supporting initiatives that improve the lives of people of determination. The award ceremony was attended by Sheikh Majid bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Executive Council Member of Sharjah and Chairman of the Districts Affairs Department, alongside several distinguished guests. Al Shamsi received the World Union of the Disabled Medal, an accolade introduced to honour individuals who have made significant contributions to the empowerment and inclusion of people of determination.
