
Sharjah Department of Culture unveils 2025 cultural programme
Under the esteemed patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, the Sharjah Department of Culture continues to lead the way in cultural and intellectual development with its ambitious 2025 programme. Announcing the plans, His Excellency Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Owais, Chairman of the Sharjah Department of Culture, highlighted how the Ruler's vision has transformed Sharjah into a beacon of knowledge and culture, thanks to a diverse range of cultural initiatives and events.
Celebrating creativity and honouring achievements
On 9 April 2025, the Sharjah Cultural Honouring Forum will mark its 21st edition in Egypt, recognising distinguished Arab figures who have made lasting contributions to Arab culture. Later, on 14-15 April, the 28th Sharjah Award for Arab Creativity – First Work will take place, cementing its reputation as a leading literary prize and a unique platform for discovering young talents.
A Month of festivals and artistic expression
In May 2025, the 6th Tetouan Festival for Moroccan Poets will run from 9 to 11 May, while the 12th Sharjah School Theatre Festival will be held from 12 to 15 May, nurturing young theatrical talents through workshops, lectures, and performances. The 8th Dibba Al-Hisn Theatre Festival for Two-Person Plays is set for 23 to 27 May. Meanwhile, Amman, Jordan will host the 22nd edition of the Sharjah Cultural Honouring Forum on 28 May 2025.
Supporting the arts and fostering critical thought
The 16th Sharjah Award for Arab Poetry Criticism and the Sharjah Award for Arab Visual Arts Criticism, titled Inspiration of Arab Heritage in Contemporary Arab Visual Art, will also be launched. The latter remains unique in the Arab world, focusing on critical art discussions led by Arab writers, critics, and academics.
Year-round cultural engagements
The Sharjah Department of Culture will continue its extensive cultural initiatives, hosting poetry evenings and literary seminars at the House of Poetry, Al Hirah Literary Council, Khorfakkan Literary Council, and Kalba Literary Council. The Arabic Calligraphy Centre in the Calligraphy Square will continue to offer specialised workshops, promoting the art of Arabic calligraphy and cultural heritage.

Onshur marks major milestone with graduation of Scale Track cohort
Sharjah, Under the patronage and in the presence of Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Sharjah Book Authority (SBA), the Sharjah Publishing Sustainability Fund (Onshur) celebrated the graduation of the first cohort of its 2025 Scale Track at SBA's headquarters. The programme is designed to support established publishers in the UAE in scaling their operations through sustainable and strategic growth. The ceremony honoured twelve publishers who completed the intensive training course. The event was attended by His Excellency H.E. Ahmed bin Rakkad Al Ameri, CEO of SBA, and H.E. Rashid Al Kous, Executive Director of the Emirates Publishers Association, as well as programme partners, experts, trainers, and representatives from local and Arab media. The twelve graduating publishers were selected from a pool of 62 applicants who met rigorous eligibility criteria. These included a demonstrated track record of producing high-quality cultural content and a well-defined strategic vision for expansion aligned with global publishing developments. The graduating cohort comprised Ajyal Publishing, Ghaf Publications, Sidra Publishing and Distribution, Loaloa Publishing and Distribution, Kalman Publishing and Distribution, Nabatti Publishing, Shaheen Printing Publishing and Distribution, Dar Al-Farqad, Dar Shams Publishing, Dar Al Fikr Al Jadeed, Dar Al Bayan Al Arabi, and Noor Publishing. Driving tangible progress for Emirati and Arab publishers Commenting on the occasion, Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi, Chairperson of SBA, emphasised the importance of empowering UAE publishers to grow and innovate within a sustainable framework. She stated: 'The Scale Track reflects our vision of enabling publishers to move beyond survival, towards a future defined by excellence, creativity, and leadership in enriching the Arab publishing landscape both locally and globally.' She continued: 'I am proud of this cohort, who have shown a remarkable capacity for learning, growth, and openness to new experiences. I believe they are now equipped with the tools and insights needed to build more resilient and adaptable business models. While they represent the current state of Arab publishing, they are equally poised to shape its global future, fuelled by ambition, determination, and a genuine passion for the written word.' Laying the foundations for strategic publishing growth The ceremony opened with a keynote speech by Iman Ben Chaibah, Director of Strategic Initiatives and Global Markets at SBA. She highlighted that Onshur is reshaping how support is delivered to publishers by offering a comprehensive strategic framework that fosters long-term, sustainable growth. 'The Scale Track has surpassed the boundaries of traditional training,' she said. 'It has established a professional platform dedicated to enhancing publishers' operational capabilities and deepening their industry expertise.' Unlocking sustained expansion through targeted support Following the directives of Sheikha Bodour, graduates of the Scale Track benefit from a robust package of post-programme support. This includes one year of professional accounting services to ensure compliance, guidance in applying for the Sharjah International Translation Grant, onboarding to Ingram's global distribution network, access to business loans secured against publishing contracts, specialised advisory sessions, and priority access to upcoming Onshur initiatives. These measures are designed to help publishers shift from operational stability to strategic and sustainable expansion.

Celebrating Passion and Fatherhood at the Sharjah House of Poetry
Poets Dr Nashed Awad, Warad Khader, and Abdullah Abdul Sabour participated in the evening, attended by poet Mohammed Abdullah Al Buraiki, Director of the House of Poetry, and a large audience of critics and poetswho interacted with and applauded the texts. Poetry represents life The evening was introduced by artist Louay Shana, who extended his deepest gratitude to His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah. Shana then welcomed the attendees, saying that no one has agreed on a definition of poetry, but seeing the crowd filling the halls of the venue, one realises that poetry is life, and that a poet's verses, when they reach the ears, are melodious and sweet, and do not stop until the doors of the conscience are opened, stirring the still and shaking the place. A bouquet of poems Poet Dr Nashed Awad, whose poems carried profound poetic connotations and images, started poems recitation. The topics of his texts varied between the emotion of love and delving into the poet's self and his relationship with writing. In his poem, "Walk Where You Are," the poet presents a delicate, emotional dialogue, blending spiritual questions and answers. Poet Warad then presented texts of a romantic and humane nature, exploring the depths of emotions and feelings. In her poem, "What's Between Us," she makes poetry a companion to love. Warad then read another poem, "The Bird of Poetry," in which she addressed the topic of her relationship with writing and poetry. Readings were concluded by poet Abdullah Abdul Sabour, whose texts adopted a humanistic approach. In his poem, "To the Soul of My Father," he painted a picture of the loss of fathers, the sadness of their separation, and the remembrance of their memory. Their memory was reflected in the meanings of loyalty, gratitude, and reverence for fatherhood. In his poem "Forest of Luck," Abdul Sabour addresses the theme of "alienation" and its painful psychological effects, eloquently describing its pain and hardships. Honouring In conclusion, poet Mohammed Al Buraiki honoured the evening's participants.
