BJP secures key posts in finance panels of municipal corporations of Gurgaon and Manesar
Gurgaon: The municipal corporations of Gurgaon (MCG) and Manesar (MCM) elected their respective members of the finance and contracts committee (F&CC) on Monday. The election of these members is significant since the funds' approvals for the development projects are accorded at the F&CC meeting. In MCG, Sundar Singh from ward number 1 and Anup Singh from ward number 25 were unanimously elected as members of the panel. Both are from BJP. In MCM, Ram Prakash (Independent) from ward 10 and Suman Kumari from ward 17 (Independent-turned BJP councillor) were elected as F&CC members. 6-member committee According to the Haryana Municipal Corporation Act, 1994, F&CC comprises six members including the mayor, two deputy mayors, two members elected by the members from amongst themselves and the commissioner. While MCG mayor Raj Rani Malhotra is from BJP, Manesar mayor Inderjeet Kaur Yadav is an Independent backed by Union minister Rao Inderjit Singh. The BJP clinched 24 seats out of a total of 36 in the MCG polls, securing a majority for the first time. Ten independent candidates won in the MCG polls and Congress and JJP each obtained one seat. However, in the MCM, where the deputy mayor and senior deputy mayor have already been elected, voting took place to elect the F&CC members. Earlier, ward number 12's councillor Parveen Yadav secured the senior deputy mayor position unopposed, while ward number 2's Reema Chauhan was elected deputy mayor without opposition. For the F&CC post, elections were held on Monday under the chairmanship of the Manesar mayor. Four councillors nominated themselves for the two positions on the committee. Councillor Ram Prakash from ward 10 received eight votes, councillor Suman Kumari from ward 17 received seven votes, Councillor Ripudaman Sharma from ward 4 received six votes while the councillor from ward 20 did not get any votes. U-19 Asian Boxing Championships: Suman Kumari wins, three others bow out
Bangkok, Aug 1 (PTI) Suman Kumari gave India a winning start even as three other boxers were knocked out of the U19 Asian Boxing Championships here on Friday. Competing in the women's 48kg category, Suman outclassed Chinese Taipei's Meng-Sin Cheng to record a commanding and unanimous decision win in the morning session and advance to the next round. However, the momentum did not continue for the rest of the Indian contingent. In the men's 50kg division, Aakash Badhwar went down 1:4 in a hard-fought bout against Uzbekistan's Odilshoh Khalimov.
