Edinburgh distillery to produce Aldi's gin 'that celebrates the Scottish spirit'
The distillery will make Aldi's Toradh Gin and add six new flavours, starting at £13.99 Summerhall Distillery in Edinburgh has been named as the latest Scottish producer to join Aldi's growing line-up of local suppliers and will now exclusively produce the supermarket's popular Toradh Gin range. The award-winning distillery, which operates from the repurposed old dog kennels of the former Royal (Dick) Vet School, is best known for its signature Pickering's Gin, Edinburgh Live reports. First launched in 2013, Pickering's is based on a handwritten Bombay recipe from 1947 and helped put the capital back on the UK's gin map. In a new deal with Aldi Scotland, Summerhall Distillery will now take on production of the retailer's Toradh Gin collection and introduce six new flavour expressions to the range, with prices starting at £13.99. The gin will form a core part of Aldi's premium spirits offering. Matt Gammell, co-founder of Summerhall Distillery, said: 'We're absolutely thrilled to be working with Aldi Scotland as part of its commitment to championing local producers. "As one of Edinburgh's earliest gin distilleries in recent years, we've watched the industry flourish and are proud to be part of such a dynamic Scottish drinks scene. 'We're especially proud to see the Toradh Gin range now available to Aldi customers. This is a collection that celebrates the warmth of the Scottish spirit, both in character and in craft. 'Our shared values of quality, authenticity and a passion for great flavour make this a natural partnership, and we're excited to see where it leads as we continue to grow this range and bring innovative, handcrafted spirits to new audiences.' Summerhall was the first operational gin distillery in Edinburgh in over 150 years when it launched more than a decade ago, and has since expanded its output to include whisky, vodka and rum. The distillery now produces thousands of litres of spirits each year, exporting to a growing number of international markets. Graham Nicolson, Group Buying Director at Aldi Scotland, said: 'Building on our rich distilling heritage in Scotch whisky, Scotland is now at the forefront of gin production. "With more than 90 gin distillers in Scotland, ranging from niche handcrafted blends to major producers exporting globally, Scotland has a unique role in serving the world's gin aficionados. Summerhall Distillery is now the exclusive distiller of Aldi's Toradh Gin, becoming the latest Scottish food and drink producer to secure a new listing with Aldi Scotland. The Edinburgh-based distiller, most famous for crafting Pickering's Gin, has been announced as the retailer's newest gin producer and will now be responsible for creating its expertly crafted, Scottish-made Toradh Gin range. Summerhall Distillery was the first new distillery to be built in Edinburgh in 150 years when it was established in 2013. Kate Forbes reveals plan to help Scottish companies export to US
The six-point export plan will identify states offering the best markets for Scottish products, as part of wider support for trade with North America. It will also aim to bring more global buyers to Scotland to showcase what companies have to offer and increase funding for exporters in the technology, life sciences, renewables and hydrogen sectors. The plan forms part of the Programme for Government to assist exporters and address global trade challenges. It comes as Scotch whisky is facing tariffs of 10% on exports to the US introduced by President Donald Trump. READ MORE: Visa applications plummet amid Labour's 'draconian' immigration plans During a visit to Summerhall Distillery in Edinburgh, which exports to more than a dozen countries including the US, Deputy First Minister Forbes said: 'In the face of global uncertainty, I am determined to protect and grow Scotland's business interests around the world. 'As the USA remains the single largest destination for Scottish exports outside the European Union, action to maintain and grow the market share while recognising the changing dynamics of US export opportunities is an important focus of our Programme for Government. (Image: Scottish Government) 'These steps will build on the significant support we already provide through Scottish Development International and its network of 34 offices across the world, including four in the US. 'We must grasp all opportunities to strengthen Scotland's reputation in world markets. Demand for Scottish products and services around the world is high and global customers recognise the innovation, quality and ambition of our businesses.' Despite what has been described as a 'full and comprehensive' trade agreement being announced between the UK and US, 10% tariffs remain on the vast majority of British exports to the US. British exports of steel and aluminium will also not face US tariffs, but the 10% rate across other industries will remain in place. Scotch whisky, which is facing 10% tariffs that will climb to 25% next June without a new agreement, was not mentioned by the UK Government. Salmon was also left out of the deal, leading industry body Salmon Scotland to warn that the 10% tariff "barrier" meant further UK-US trade talks were necessary.
