This vibrant programme of live music events is designed to support creative health, community connection and cultural celebration. North Lanarkshire Council's arts development team, in partnership with Coatbridge's Summerlee Museum, have announced the return of Music in the Museum. This vibrant programme of live music events is designed to support creative health, community connection and cultural celebration. Building on the success of its inaugural year, the 2025 series of Music in the Museum continues to place creativity at the heart of community wellbeing. Lu McNair, museums and collections manager, North Lanarkshire Council, is "delighted" to welcome the team back to Summerlee. She added: "Following an incredibly successful first year of collaboration with our arts development team, we are thrilled to announce the return of our music programme at the museum. "This initiative has brought our spaces to life, offering joyful, inclusive experiences that support wellbeing and celebrate our rich cultural heritage. "Music in the Museum is a shining example of how creativity can connect people, inspire communities, and contribute to a healthier North Lanarkshire." First up are a duo of events with Tenement Jazz Band on Saturday, August 30. The first showcase is a lively, family-friendly afternoon of toe-tapping New Orleans jazz. Audiences can enjoy an interactive concert packed with fun tunes, silly stories, and dancing - perfect for children and grown-ups alike. This will be followed by a concert with Tenement Jazz Band for an intimate evening of rich 1920s jazz, playful storytelling, and heartfelt improvisation. Ideal for jazz lovers and curious newcomers. Following this gathering, the popular events will return monthly from September to December, celebrating North Lanarkshire's musical legacy, blending music and classical dance, jigging with an award-winning folk-rock trio and ending with a nostalgic evening of classic songs. Music in the Museum is committed to making world-class music accessible to all. Most events are priced at just £10, offering exceptional value for high-quality live performance on a local stage. To ensure no one is excluded due to cost, a limited number of free tickets are available for every event through the Free Ticket Request Scheme. Aaron Hawthorne, arts development officer for North Lanarkshire Council and producer of Music in the Museum, said: "North Lanarkshire has long been a proud home to some of Scotland's - and the world's - most celebrated musical talent. "With venues like Airdrie Town Hall continuing to host everything from major national orchestras to electrifying rock bands, the authority's musical legacy remains strong. "Music in the Museum builds on this tradition by offering something different: intimate performances from distinctive artists in the unique and atmospheric setting of Summerlee Museum. "Adding to North Lanarkshire's rich cultural programming, this initiative reflects our commitment to creative health and wellbeing - bringing audiences closer to exceptional music, right here in North Lanarkshire."

Plans underway in North Lanarkshire to mark 40 years since miners' strike
These include educational activities and school projects to help young people learn about the mining industry and its importance in shaping the area. Plans are underway to mark 40 years since the miners' strike, recognising how it shaped North Lanarkshire communities and Scotland's industrial past. The 1984-1985 miners' strike saw major industrial action within the British coal industry as part of a campaign to prevent pit closures. To honour those involved, a series of events and projects are being developed in North Lanarkshire. These include educational activities and school projects to help young people learn about the mining industry and its importance in shaping the area. And a permanent memorial will be erected at Summerlee Museum in Coatbridge, possibly including a stained-glass window designed with help from local schools and community groups. North Lanarkshire Council will also promote fair work and workers' rights, reflecting the values that were fought for during the strike. Councillor Geraldine Woods, convener of communities, said: "This is about recognising the strength and unity of our mining communities, and making sure future generations understand the sacrifices those families made. "The miners' strike helped shape our local identity, and this memorial will keep that legacy alive." The council has already shown its support for the miners' strike by lighting the civic centre in red and by supporting the Miners' Strike (Pardon) Bill. The memorial will be part of wider improvements at Summerlee Museum, which will include a new miners' welfare hall and learning spaces.
