Sunday Funday for Summit League Championships

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The Summit League Basketball Championships are off and running in Sioux Falls, days earlier than in the past. The Summit League Basketball Championships have been won and lost on a Tuesday every year since moving to Sioux Falls in 2009. That won't be the case this year, as the league shifted the tournament schedule to Wednesday through Sunday. 'CBS Network had a few more windows of availability for us so we kind of looked at it and talked to the Premier Center and they had the dates open, so it just kind of worked,' Summit League Assistant Commissioner for Communications Ryan Powell said. Ryan Powell is the assistant commissioner for communications and says so far the feedback from fans has been nothing but positive. How tariffs could impact South Dakota farmers 'It's easier to take off a Thursday and a Friday at the end of a work week sometimes than it is a Monday and a Tuesday when you're just getting started, so I think that's helped,' Powell said. 'In my opinion, it's a minor adjustment but I think it's a good move,' SDSU fan Darryl Nordquist said. Darryl Nordquist is an SDSU alum and believes the new schedule will benefit attendance numbers. 'I may come to the championship game even if SDSU's not in it because it's on a weekend rather than a Tuesday,' Nordquist said. 'Just makes more sense to have the championship on Sunday, more people can go. I used to have to take my kids out of school for the women's games on Monday, Tuesday back in the day, so this way it's kind of nice,' USD fan Kelly Gellerman said. Kelly Gellerman is a regular at USD games, and says the new setup will benefit fans of every team, from Sioux Falls and beyond. 'From an experience standpoint, they can make it a whole day, they don't have to run back to work, you always saw people coming in suits and that kind of thing to run to the game,' Gellerman said. Now that the field is set, all that's left is to crown a men's and women's champion. 'Hey, we're Coyote fans, we're always optimistic, it's always 'go Yotes',' Gellerman said. And bring on the weekend. 'We're one of the earliest conferences to cut down the nets so that's kind of exciting to get people really rolling into March Madness,' Powell said. The women's championship game is set for 3:00 Sunday afternoon, while the men's title contest will tip off at 8:00 p.m. Both games can be seen on CBS Sports Network. Sending students to the Summit League Championships

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A Sioux Falls orthodontist is helping put a smile on the faces of local students with tickets to the Summit League Basketball Championships. It's not your average Tuesday for Ashley Kracke's fifth grade class at R.F. Pettigrew Elementary in Sioux Falls. The students are learning math using Summit League statistics. 'We're currently learning about comparing and ordering and adding decimals, and so we took some of the stats from their players and we're going to be doing some story problems,' Kracke said. A March shopping event to support 14 local businesses The league is part of this week's lesson plan because these students are among the more than 800 fifth graders who will attend a Summit League Tournament game. The women's matchup between St. Thomas and North Dakota is doubling as a geography lesson. 'We've just really embraced getting to know where is North Dakota from us, where is Minnesota from us,' Kracke said. The students will learn now and have fun come Friday. 'I'm looking forward to sitting with my friends and enjoying some good basketball,' 11-year-old student Brynn Dreke said. 'I'm really excited to watch basketball because I don't really get to watch basketball that much and I get to be with my friends while I get to watch it,' 11-year-old student Grace Samson said. It's an opportunity made possible by Wermerson Orthodontics, which donated tickets to a number of area schools. 'There's so many other schools that he could have paid for but one of them was Pettigrew so I'm really happy that he picked us,' Samson said. 'It's just fun to make kids smile, get them out of the classroom a little bit, it's a good field trip,' Wermerson Orthodontics owner Chris Wermerson said. And one story sums up why Chris Wermerson continues to donate tickets. 'Last year, one of the little kids, he's coming up the escalator, it was hilarious because he looks and me and goes 'this is the biggest building I've ever seen'. I mean, how can you not want to keep inviting kids back when they're so excited just going up an escalator,' Wermerson said. The students will arrive at the Premier Center at 11:30 Friday morning, and will stay for a majority of the women's quarterfinal game between St. Thomas and North Dakota, which tips off at noon. How a restaurant prepares for tournament time

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The month of March is here and with it comes an exciting time for basketball fans. The Summit League Basketball Championships begin Wednesday in Sioux Falls. DTSF offering free rides to Summit League Tournament The Crooked Pint is expecting a busy week ahead. The restaurant, connected to a hotel, is near the PREMIER Center where all the Summit League basketball action will take place. General manager Krissy Yerigan says extra staff will be on hand as more people stop in for a bite to eat. 'You never know when it's going to hit, so we just like to be prepared,' Yerigan said. The restaurant is also making sure there's plenty of food and drinks to serve customers. 'Extra hamburger buns, extra hamburgers, the patties, and our liquor and beer order is pretty significant, especially with the beer and liquor because we only get that once a week, so we don't want to run out,' Yerigan said. Experience Sioux Falls CEO Teri Schmidt is expecting thousands to travel to Sioux Falls for the tournaments, but just how big that number gets depends on different factors. 'Weather, when they're teams play, can they get away. Some years we've had more than others. It just depends on so many factors, but we know we will have some good crowds,' Schmidt said. And Yerigan welcomes the crowds. 'I thrive on the busyness, and it makes your day go fast, and it keeps things interesting,' Yerigan said. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
