Global Sumud Flotilla to Set Sail for Gaza on This Date

After the Madleen and Handala were intercepted by Israeli forces, the Global Sumud Flotilla will set sail on Sunday, August 31. The flotilla will transport delegations from over 40 countries, including Malaysia, the US, Brazil, Morocco, Sri Lanka, Tunisia, the Netherlands, and Colombia. The delegations have already started their non-violence training in preparation for the Global Sumud Flotilla. The flotilla will be the largest civilian maritime mission to Gaza since 2007. Like Madleen and Handala, GSF aims to break Israel's ongoing humanitarian blockade of the enclave and highlight the international complicity in the ongoing genocide of Palestinians in the Strip. The main launch of Sumud is scheduled on August 31, from Spain, which will be followed by a launch in Tunisia and other countries on September 4. The Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is the official patron for the flotilla and will flag the regional convoy on August 23, according to the southeast coalition, Sumud Nusantara. Many mass monilizations will support the mission, including rallies across dozens of countries on August 9 and around the time of the main launch.

Sumud Nusantara Convoy launched to break Gaza siege, deliver aid

KUALA LUMPUR: Civil society groups and youth movements from eight countries have launched the Sumud Nusantara Convoy, a grassroots effort to break the Gaza siege and deliver aid amid what they call a deliberate, man-made famine. Muhd Haikal Luqman, Sumud Nusantara strategic executive (public relations), said the initiative aims to respond to the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza as a united front, where children are starving and aid remains stuck at sealed borders. "This isn't a protest. It's a promise. We move because Gaza can't. The Global South is standing up, not as victims of history, but as moral leaders of today to end the man-made famine and starvation in Gaza," he said. Haikal said the movement is supported by organisations from Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, and the Maldives. He added that the Sumud Nusantara Convoy is also backed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who serves as its Patron. Haikal highlighted the dire situation in Gaza, stating, "Food is rotting at sealed borders while children drink from toilets. This famine is no accident. It's deliberate and man-made. And we will not be silent," he said at a press conference during the convoy launch today. He said that the convoy will begin with a mass mobilisation of two million people across five countries, followed by a transnational journey through Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia, gathering momentum before converging in Kuala Lumpur. "From there, selected delegates will travel to Europe to board ships in the Global Sumud Flotilla to Gaza in August. These ships will carry real aid, but more importantly, they carry a message: the world is watching, and Southeast Asia is moving. We are not diplomats or the United Nations. We are ordinary people who refuse to wait watching," he added. Haikal also urged the public to support or join the convoy via or register at He called on world governments to demand the opening of the Rafah border for unrestricted humanitarian access.
