Sunbury council to vote again on candidates for open seat

SUNBURY — Sunbury City Council will try again to fill open seat on the board Monday after a judge sent the decision back to the board. The Northumberland County Republican committee named Andrew Ramos as the candidate to face the Democratic choice, Victoria Rosancrans, in a secondary election for the two-year Sunbury City Council in November. The seat became open when former Councilwoman Lisa Martina resigned to become city treasurer. Martina ran for and won the Republican nomination for city treasurer in May. She is unopposed for the November General Election. She was appointed to fill the vacancy left when former Treasurer Kevin Troup retired to pursue a seat on city council. She stepped down from city council after she was appointed treasurer. Troup, current Councilman Nate Savidge and Andres Manresa all advanced out of the primary and will compete for two four-year seats on council. The secondary election was announced by the Northumberland County Elections Office in June. Ramos, Rosancrans, Manresa, Troup and James Brumbach are set to appear before council Monday as each seek to be appointed to the board until electees are sworn in in January. Council voted 2-2 on Ramos and Rosancrans about a month ago, then petitioned the court to fill the seat. President Judge Paige Rosini sent the petition back to council and ordered them to try to fill it a second time on their own. Mayor Josh Brosious said the board will vote on candidates again prior to the council meeting, which begins at 6:15 p.m. inside City Hall on Market Street. Brosious said the vote will take place when the official meeting begins. If council once again cannot agree, they can send it back to Rosini, who can choose anyone she wishes, even those outside of the candidates, to fill the spot until January. Solve the daily Crossword

Ramos chosen as Republican candidate for Sunbury council secondary election

SUNBURY — The Northumberland County Republican committee named Andrew Ramos as the candidate to face Victoria Rosancrans in the secondary election for Sunbury City Council in November. According to party leaders, Ramos, who ran an unsuccessful campaign for mayor in May, was chosen as the candidate over current Councilman John Barnhart, who also lost his reelection bid in May. Northumberland County Democratic Committee Chairperson John J. Merchlinsky III announced the Democratic committee chose Rosancrans as their candidate about a month ago. The seat became open when former Councilwoman Lisa Martina resigned to become city treasurer. The secondary election was needed after Martina ran for and won the Republican nomination for city treasurer in May. The secondary election was announced by the Northumberland County Elections Office last month. Ramos, Rosancrans, Manresa, Troup and James Brumbach are set to appear before council Monday as each seek to be appointed to the board until January when the individual who wins the secondary election will take office. Council voted 2-2 on Ramos and Rosancrans and then petitioned the court to fill the seat. President Judge Paige Rosini sent the petition back to council and ordered them to try to fill it a second time on their own. Ramos said he was honored to get the nomination. 'I am thankful to the Northumberland County Republican committee for the opportunity to present myself and for their support in selecting me as the nominee,' he said. 'I look forward to getting out in the community and listening to residents and earning the trust and vote of the people of Sunbury. I'm committed to revitalizing our city, growing our local economy and working with others to move Sunbury forward.' Solve the daily Crossword

Sunbury to have second city council race in fall after two resignations

SUNBURY — A secondary election for a seat on the Sunbury City Council will be needed after Councilwoman Lisa Martina has announced her resignation. Martina was appointed as city treasurer and resigned from her existing seat on council with two years remaining in her term. She won the Republican nomination for treasurer and is on the ballot unapposed in the fall. The current Sunbury Treasurer, Kevin Troup, a Republican, announced his resignation in May after winning the nomination for one of two open seats for city council in the May primary. Martina announced her resignation from council Monday after she was appointed by the board to become the acting city treasurer, even though she will still remain on the ballot in November. She takes the office over on June 30, the same day Troup is finished. Councilman Nate Savidge and Troup secured Republican nominations in the spring. They will join Democrat Andres Manresa on the ballot in the fall, for two contested seats. Martina's empty seat will be part of a secondary election on Nov. 4, Northumberland County Director of Elections Lindsay Phillips. Phillips said both the Republican and Democratic parties will each nominate a candidate to run for the seat. On Monday, City Council announced officials will be accepting applications for individuals interested in filling the seat until January. Chief Clerk Jeff Wojciechowski said as of Friday, he has not received any letters of interest. Phillips said the decision to appoint a council member until January or until November — after the secondary election is decided — would be up to city officials. Mayor Josh Brosious said he recently found out the secondary election was triggered and that he still intends to attempt to fill the seat in the meantime. 'We will still try to attempt to fill the position until the secondary election is decided in November,' Brosious said. 'If this seat can't be filled, it will remain vacant until the residents vote for their candidate of choice.' The only council member on the board that would not be involved in a race this fall is Councilman Jim Eister, who still has more than two years left in his term. Currently, the board consists of Brosious, Eister, Savidge and John Barnhart. The first election, involving Troup, Savidge and Manresa, is to fill the seats currently held by Savidge and Barnhart. The secondary election candidates would be announced in the next few weeks by their parties. Anyone looking to fill the current open council seat is asked to drop off a letter of interest to City Hall, on Market Street.
