SC junks plea for use of indigenous cow milk at Tirumala rituals
Tirupati: Hearing a petition that sought exclusive use of indigenous cow milk for rituals at the famed Sri Venkateswara Swamy temple in Tirumala, the Supreme Court declined to intervene, remarking that matters of devotion should not be confined by breed distinctions and urging the petitioner to approach the appropriate High Court instead. The petition was filed by Yuga Thulasi Foundation and others against TTD and others. A bench comprising Justices MM Sundaresh and N Kotiswar Singh, while hearing the matter, guided the petitioner to approach the respective High Court instead. 'A cow is a cow,' remarked Justice Sundaresh, underlining that distinctions based on cow breeds, languages, or regions are human constructs. 'God belongs to everyone. Can we then claim that God prefers only local cow milk?' he asked, cautioning against injecting divisive interpretations into religious practices. The petitioner's counsel had argued that the Agama Shastras prescribe the use of milk from native Indian breeds in temple rituals and pointed out that TTD itself had previously passed a resolution supporting such practices. The plea, the lawyer insisted, was aimed at enforcing TTD's own stated commitment. However, the bench queried whether there was any binding legal framework backing such a demand. Upon being referred to prior constitutional judgments, the court was not convinced to admit the case and declined to interfere. 'Shall we also then ask whether Tirupati laddus should be made exclusively from indigenous ingredients?' Justice Sundaresh remarked in a lighter vein, before allowing the petitioner to withdraw the plea with the liberty to move the High Court. Justice Sundaresh said that devotion must manifest through compassion for all life forms rather than by creating artificial divides. 'Many pressing issues demand the court's attention. My observations were made with utmost respect to religious sentiments', he added. Meanwhile, it was learnt that the temple's cattle shelters house over 3,000 indigenous cows of breeds like Ongole, Gir, and Sahiwal. These cows already supply milk for rituals such as the sacred Abhishekam performed for the deity.

Facebook ‘boyfriend' murders Karnataka woman during their first meeting in Hassan, arrested from Mandya
The police in Mandya of Karnataka Tuesday arrested a 28-year-old man for allegedly killing a woman he met on Facebook, and burying her body at a farm in the district. The police said Puneeth Gowda, a resident of Mandya district and an engineering graduate, killed Preethi Sundaresh Saturday during their first meeting near Hassan in 'a fit of rage'. They said Sundaresh, a Hassan resident, was married and had two children, and Gowda is unemployed, adding that the two got in touch with each other on Facebook two days before they met in Hassan. According to the police, they launched a probe after Sundaresh was reported missing by her family Saturday. The police closed in on Gowda after probing her Call Details Records (CDR) and Facebook messages, which eventually led to his arrest. According to a Mandya police officer, after exchanging messages on the social media platform, they both expressed a desire to meet and have a physical relationship. Without informing her family, Sundaresh went on an outing with Gowda in his car on Saturday, the officer added. After spending some private moments near Hassan, they got into a heated argument, and Gowda struck Sudaresh, resulting in her death. Later, Gowda transported her body in his car and buried it on his farm near the Kattaraghatta forest in KR Pet, said a police officer. 'Puneeth claims that Preethi offered him money to continue to have a physical relationship with him. But Puneeth expressed disinterest, and a fight broke out over the issue,' a police officer said. On Wednesday, the Mandya police took Gowda back to the location where he had allegedly buried the body.

Unflappables sunil puts Shivamogga on hockey map
SHIVAMOGGA : Shivamogga is renowned for its lush greenery, waterfalls, rich cultural heritage and, yes, Ninasam, the drama school. Now, the twenty-year-old wiry, swarthy and uncompromising defender Sunil PB is set to put Shivamogga on the international hockey map when he dons the India jersey in the four-nation junior tournament to be held in Berlin next month. Dribbling past poverty and hard luck, Sunil, the younger of the two sons of daily-wage labourers in Talluru in Sorab taluk, has come a long way. 'My father, Palakshappa, is aged and not going for work these days. Mother, Rathnamma, and elder brother, Sandeep, work either as daily agriculture labourers or as masons. No one in our village thought I would play for India one day,' said a beaming Sunil when TNIE reached out to him. Sunil's life-changing moment came nearly eleven years ago when talent-spotter Sundaresh set his eyes on the bright schoolboy. He was on a scouting trip to Sunil's School. After putting Sunil through some routine tests, Sundaresh was impressed by the youngster's gritty attitude. Sunil recalls the turning point. He told TNIE: 'After taking some tests, Sundaresh sir asked me 'Are you interested in playing hockey? I said yes.' Sunil joined Shivamogga Sports Hostel in 2015-16 and enrolled at Sarvodaya School in Class 6. Later he moved on to DVS High School. After completing Class 10, he moved to Coorg to join the hockey hostel and enrolled for PUC. The next year Sunil dribbled his way into Sports Authority of India hostel in Bengaluru. He later joined Surana College for his Bachelor of Arts programme. During the first year in 2022, Sunil got selected to Karnataka junior team and he continued to play for the state in 2023. In 2024, he led the Karnataka team to a creditable fourth place finish in the Junior National Championship held in Jalandhar. Now, Berlin awaits the man from Shivamogga. An elated Sunil told TNIE: 'It is a great moment in my life as I am all set to represent my country at an international tournament. Coming from a backward village, I never dreamt of becoming a hockey player.

25th CPI State-level conference in Kalaburagi from August 30
State secretary of the CPI Saathi Sundaresh, addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, said that the 25th State-level conference of the party, which will be inaugurated on August 30, will discuss critical issues affecting unorganized workers and to explore solutions. The three-day conference will chalk out action plans to intensify agitation in the next three years to protect the interests of workers, small traders and employees, as government policies are aimed at appeasing the corporate sector. He said that the BJP-led government at the Centre has put the interest of small traders at stake by bowing before the corporate sector and handing over the country's wealth to industrialists which is widening the gap between the rich and the poor sections. He said that the conference will highlight and make people aware of the socio-economic problems created by the BJP-led government at the Centre and its anti-traders, anti-farmers, anti-workers policies. In the last few years, public assets are steadily being handed over to private hands, even as the privatization of Public Sector Undertakings is depriving lakhs of youths of permanent government jobs while also undermining reservation benefits for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and OBCs, Mr. Sundaresh added. Organising committee An organising Committee consisting of more than 200 people, including social activists, scholars, intellectuals, educationists and concerned citizens, will be formed to oversee the 25th State-level conference. Activist R.K. Hudagi will be the honorary president of the organising committee and senior journalist and writer Ramzan Dargah will be the president. Karuneshwara Swami, retired judge G.K. Ghokale and the Sajjada Nasheen of the Khwaja Banda Nawaz Dargah will be the honorary members of the committee. Sub-committee A sub-committee consisting of 100 people from various fields and 200 volunteers will be appointed to oversee logistics related to transportation, accommodation arrangements for dignitaries and CPI leaders coming from across the State.
