Scotland's top sandwich filling named by Aldi as school meals increase by 20%
Did your favourite make the top three?
Families across Scotland will be gearing up for the kids going back to school. With some council areas going back this week, it's time to get all the essentials sorted.
With some little ones favouring a packed lunch over something on the school menu, parents will need to get in something their children will not scoff at as part of the weekly grocery shop.
For those unsure their lunch definitely won't come back half eaten, then Aldi Scotland has revealed the nations favourite sandwich - and it turns out it's a simple, yet classic choice.
Unveiling results based on a recent poll, the budget supermarket has revealed the top three fillings among hungry Scots when it comes to the main lunchtime favourite.
Taking the crown was the humble cheese sandwich, raking in an impressive 368 votes in total as it just edged out a surprising second-place contender in egg mayo that cinched 305 votes.
Coming in at third place was another simple and easy choice, as ham took home the bronze in the poll with a total of 296 votes.
News of our favourite sandwich filling comes just as families across the country are set to face more than an increase of 20 percent on the price of school meals this year.
The Sunday Mail Investigation found that the cost of lunch is now more than £579 per year in one local authority with many announcing huge rises as they struggle to balance the books.
For school parents in South Lanarkshire, the total price per child has been increased by £85.50 a year, taking the total to £497.80, marking a 20.6 percent increase.
Meanwhile, Aberdeenshire council charges the most for lunch after a £76 increase a year took the total cost to £579.50, while Falkirk Council will increase the price of meals by 30p per day this month (August.)
Over at Glasgow City Council, prices are not set to be raised this year and lunch costs £361 per year, but Edinburgh will introduce a 15p increase, taking the yearly cost to £503.
