Indonesian dump truck driver killed in quarry mishap in Penang
NIBONG TEBAL: A 21-year-old Indonesian dump truck driver was killed in an accident at a quarry site in Sungai Jawi here last Friday.
The incident occurred about 8.30am in the rock face crash zone of the quarry, which is operated by a private company and a subcontractor.
The victim is believed to have lost control of the vehicle while descending a sloped path, causing it to crash into the safety zone.
He sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Sungai Bakap Hospital for emergency treatment. He succumbed to his injuries the following day.
The cause of death was determined to be abdominal injuries resulting from the incident.
The Penang Occupational Safety and Health Department has launched an investigation into the incident and issued three prohibition notices and two improvement notices to the parties involved.
"Employers have been instructed to submit relevant documents and conduct an internal investigation."
The department said it would record statements from witnesses as part of the investigation.
"Legal action under Section 15(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994 (Amendment) 2022 may be pursued if any violations are established.
