'You didn't want to be around me': Angry Brooks Koepka moving on from missed cuts at majors

OAKMONT, Pa. – Missing the cut at the first two majors of the season left Brooks Koepka in a miserable mood. 'From the first weekend in April until about last week, you didn't want to be around me,' said Koepka, who missed the cut at the Masters and PGA Championship, the first time the five-time major winner has missed the cut at back-to-back majors in his career. 'It drove me nuts. It ate at me. I haven't been happy. It's been very irritating.' Advertisement But thanks to an eagle and birdies on his final two holes, Koepka, a two-time U.S. Open champion, even broke character and smiled once or twice on Thursday after posting 2-under 68, good enough for a share of third with South Koreans Si Woo Kim and Sungjae Im at Oakmont. 'It's been a while,' Koepka said. 'I've been working hard, just got into some bad habits and bad swing positions.' He blamed poor swing mechanics – although noted a terrible putting performance at the Masters sealed his fate that week – and he's finally getting the club in better positions. His perception of the club's position compared to where it actually was he estimated to be off by 8-9 inches. 'Now it's starting to click,' he said. Brooks Koepka plays his shot from the ninth tee during the first round of the 2025 U.S. Open. Koepka sounded a warning to the field that he is going to be a factor this week at Oakmont. He's won the U.S. Open and finished in the top 5 each time he's opened with an under-par opening round (2017, 2019 and 2021). Advertisement Frustrated with his game, he skipped playing practice round at LIV's Virginia event and spent last week hitting on the range for long hours alongside longtime swing instructor Pete Cowen, who gave him the tough love he needed. 'Pete got into me again on Monday in the bunker for about 45 minutes,' said Koepka. Justin Thomas witness the scolding from the other side of the green. When they both attended a sponsor function later that night, Thomas said, 'I was worried; your head was down.' But Koepka took it like a man because he knew he had it coming to him. 'I wouldn't have wanted to be around me,' he said. 'I don't like having 'yes' people around me. I just want somebody to tell me the truth, tell me what's going on, what they see. If I start swaying from being Brooks Koepka, then I want someone to call me out on it, and he did a helluva job on it.' Advertisement Asked to name the last time Cowen chewed him out like that, Koepka answered, 'Erin Hills.' While he may be forgetting a time in between, Koepka remembers well what happened in 2017 after Cowen read him the riot act – he won the U.S. Open. Tyrrell Hatton gives honest verdict on Oakmont rough for US Open: ‘I can't even see the ball'

Tyrell Hatton has given an honest verdict on the Oakmont rough ahead of this year's US Open. Hatton, 33, took to the course in preparation for the major, which kicks off on Thursday 12 June. But when his ball ended up to the side of a bunker in the rough, he was dismayed at the length of the grass as he struggled to find his ball. 'I only saw it because I'm stood here,' he said, standing directly over his ball, which was buried in thick green grass. 'Set up over it, I can't even see the ball.' As he shot his ball back towards the fairway, he took a hefty chunk of earth and grass with it, an inevitability in such rough. However, this was no anomaly for English golfer Hatton, with the video documenting his practice round later showing him land in similarly thick rough time and time again. Another shot with his rescue club ended with him 'skying' the ball after taking a divot out of the ground, which was met by laughter from him and his team. 'That's mad,' he added. 'You can see how deep it is.' Hatton goes into the US Open ranked as 24th in the world, with his best result at Oakmont coming in 2018 when he finished tied for sixth. He will tee off in Thursday's first round from the 10th hole at 6:25pm BST, alongside South Korea's Sung-jae Im and Austria's Sepp Straka. Then in the second round on Friday, he'll tee off from the first hole at 12:40pm BST. The top 60 from the two opening rounds will then progress through to the weekend, at the end of which a champion will be crowned.

Scottie Scheffler is back on home ground in Texas, as he makes another attempt to end his victory drought at the CJ Cup in Dallas. The world No 1 is head and shoulders above this field on paper - Sungjae Im, ranked 20th, is Scheffler's closest rival in the world rankings. So it is no surprise to see the man who won nine times last year installed as a red hot 11-4 favourite to finally open his account for 2025. But Scheffler's best finish in five previous outings in Dallas is a share of fifth. Add that to the fact that he keeps going close without crossing the finishing line at the moment, and that short price is only for the brave or the reckless. Free bet offers from our betting partners The CJ Cup Byron Nelson betting tips There are also question marks over most of the other players near the top of the market. Jordan Spieth is second favourite at around 18-1, but his inconsistency has been well documented. Third favourite Sungjae Im failed to follow up his impressive Masters showing when 11th at the Heritage - and he missed the cut last week when bidding for a hat-trick of wins at the Woori Championship in Korea. Those wins in Korea in 2023 and 2024 are Im's only victories since he claimed his second PGA Tour title four years ago, and I've started to run out of patience with him. I prefer the chances of fellow Korean Ben An. He finished a close fourth here last year, and ended 2024 with victory at the Genesis. Another win cannot be far away, and at 28-1 it is worth wagering that it will happen this week. Defending champion Taylor Pendrith has gone close to adding to last year's success a few times, and was fifth in the Texas Open a few weeks ago. The big-hitting Canadian clearly enjoys teeing it up in the Lone Star state, and at 33-1 he has to come into the reckoning again. Ben Griffin 's victory alongside Andrew Novak in the hotly-contested Zurich Classic last week should be a big confidence boost. He only just missed out on a top ten finish here a year ago, and he is a better player now. So a best-priced 45-1 is tempting. Ryo Hisatsune was right in the mix at the Zurich alongside fellow Japaneses star Takumi Nakaya before a poor finish in the second round of foursomes sent them crashing down the leaderboard. Hisatsune still played plenty of good golf, and at 66-1 he remains a good each way option - and so does 80-1 shot Alejandro Tosti, who was only a shot away from justifying the confidence shown in him here for the Corales. Nico Echavarrio also continues to be worth a small interest while he remains at three figure odds - he can be backed at 125-1 this week - while Puerto Rico winner Karl Vilips got back on an even keel at the Heritage. The 125-1 on offer looks fair. ***************************************** This week's other main event is the LIV South Korea shoot-out, where Bryson DeChambeau will be looking to bounce back from his disappointing final round effort at the Masters. DeChambeau disputes favouritism with Jon Rahm and Joaquin Niemann, two other in-form players who flattered to deceive at Augusta. You will struggle to get better odds than 7-1 for any of that trio, and in such a tight contest that price holds little appeal. Patrick Reed 's third place finish at Augusta seems to have been overlooked. At 22-1 he looks the pick of this market. Marc Leishman is also worth a second glance at 40-1, especially after his victory at LIV Miami at the start of April And highly-rated young Spaniard Luis Masaveu is finding his feet in the LIV ranks. He will win an event soon, and at 250-1 he is worth an each way interest here. 7 golfers who surprisingly missed the cut at the Cognizant Classic (including Sungjae Im)

7 golfers who surprisingly missed the cut at the Cognizant Classic (including Sungjae Im) Two rounds have now been completed at the Cognizant Classic in the Palm Beaches, which is held at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, and it's certainly been a golfer-friendly course so far. The leader, Jake Knapp, sits at 13-under after Round 2 thanks to one of the best rounds of golf we've seen on the PGA Tour in recent memory in which he shot 59 for the day in Round 1. Despite shooting just 1-under on Friday, his electric performance on Thursday gives him a one-stroke lead entering the weekend. The course wasn't as kind to others as it was to Knapp, however. Quite a few golfers who were widely expected to be in contention this week will not be continuing after missing the cut, which was set at a lofty 5-under. Here are seven golfers whose missed cuts surprised us. Austin Eckroat (-1) Make Cut Odds: -200 Miss Cut Odds: +150 Eckroat's week was practically over before it even began as a trio of front-nine bogeys on Thursday hamstrung him en route to a 2-over performance. He attempted to salvage it with a Round 2 that saw him birdie five times on the back nine and finish 3-under, but it wasn't enough. Byeong-Hun An (E) Make Cut Odds: -200 Miss Cut Odds: +150 An was in position to compete after Thursday as he finished the round 2-under, but he hurt his chances significantly with a three-bogey front nine on Friday. He ultimately finished the round 2-over and left Palm Beach with an even par score and a missed cut. Cameron Young (-1) Make Cut Odds: -200 Miss Cut Odds: +150 Young was one of the more surprising golfers who is heading home as he turned in a three-under performance in Round 1 with a four-birdie back nine to close out a strong outing. He was respectable on Friday, finishing 1-under, but that was one stroke short of the cut line. His five bogeys in Round 2 will loom large. Davis Thompson (-3) Make Cut Odds: -250 Miss Cut Odds: +180 It's not particularly often that you see a golfer miss the cut with back-to-back under par rounds, but that's exactly what happened to Thompson. He was 2-under in Round 1 and 1-under in Round 2, but a pair of double bogeys on Friday overshadowed what was an otherwise impressive round featuring six birdies. Kurt Kitayama (-2) Make Cut Odds: -225 Miss Cut Odds: +170 Kitayama didn't do himself many favors with an even par showing on Day 1, but he did what he could to stay in it on Day 2. He shot 2-under with four birdies to two bogeys, but that wasn't enough to climb out of the hole he put himself in on Thursday. Sungjae Im Make Cut Odds: -285 Miss Cut Odds: +200 Im tied for the best odds to make the cut among the golfers listed here, and like Thompson, he was under par in both rounds. He shot 3-under in Round 1 but put himself in a rough spot with a double bogey and two bogeys on the front nine Friday. He finished the round strong with four birdies on the back nine, but he ended up one stroke shy of making the cut. Taylor Pendrith (-4) Make Cut Odds: -285 Miss Cut Odds: +200 Pendrith matched Im's showing in Palm Beach, turning in a 3-under Round 1 that featured an eagle on the first hole. While that was a memorable moment, a three-bogey Round 2 was less memorable as Pendrith is heading home after just missing the 5-under cut line.
