Man arrested under Excise Act dies during treatment
Patna: A youth,
Sunil Manjhi
, from Gabhatal Mushahari, died during treatment at the PMCH after being arrested by Danapur police in Patna for alcohol-related offence.
Upon learning about the death, relatives of Sunil staged a protest at the Danapur sub-jail's entrance on Sunday morning and later blocked the Danapur-Gandhi Maidan road.
Sunil was arrested by the police on June 9 for consumption of alcohol and its sale. His wife, Mamta Devi, said that Sunil suffered from epilepsy and lost consciousness at the police station while being transferred to jail, yet the authorities proceeded with his incarceration. She further alleged that the police took six people into custody and four were released after paying money, while Sunil and his brother Ghamandi Manjhi were sent to prison.
According to deputy jail superintendent Anil Kumar, both brothers, charged under the Excise Act, arrived at the jail on June 10. "When Sunil's health deteriorated, he received initial treatment on the jail premises, after which he was shifted to the Danapur sub-divisional hospital. He was then transferred to the PMCH on June 14 evening due to his critical condition, where he died during treatment on Sunday," he said.

Danapur's station house officer, Prashant Kumar Bhardwaj, told this reporter that the allegations made by the deceased's wife are baseless. "During a special drive against liquor smuggling, sale and consumption, around 20 people were arrested from different localities in the Danapur police station area on June 9. All the accused were produced in the court and they went through a medical check-up before being sent to jail," he said.
"On Sunday morning, we received information about the death of Sunil. The police subsequently informed his family. His postmortem was done by the medical board in the presence of a magistrate, and all the procedures were followed. The cause of death will be known once the medical report comes," the SHO said.
