Patna: A youth,
Sunil Manjhi
, from Gabhatal Mushahari, died during treatment at the PMCH after being arrested by Danapur police in Patna for alcohol-related offence.
Upon learning about the death, relatives of Sunil staged a protest at the Danapur sub-jail's entrance on Sunday morning and later blocked the Danapur-Gandhi Maidan road.
Sunil was arrested by the police on June 9 for consumption of alcohol and its sale. His wife, Mamta Devi, said that Sunil suffered from epilepsy and lost consciousness at the police station while being transferred to jail, yet the authorities proceeded with his incarceration. She further alleged that the police took six people into custody and four were released after paying money, while Sunil and his brother Ghamandi Manjhi were sent to prison.
According to deputy jail superintendent Anil Kumar, both brothers, charged under the Excise Act, arrived at the jail on June 10. "When Sunil's health deteriorated, he received initial treatment on the jail premises, after which he was shifted to the Danapur sub-divisional hospital. He was then transferred to the PMCH on June 14 evening due to his critical condition, where he died during treatment on Sunday," he said.

Danapur's station house officer, Prashant Kumar Bhardwaj, told this reporter that the allegations made by the deceased's wife are baseless. "During a special drive against liquor smuggling, sale and consumption, around 20 people were arrested from different localities in the Danapur police station area on June 9. All the accused were produced in the court and they went through a medical check-up before being sent to jail," he said.
"On Sunday morning, we received information about the death of Sunil. The police subsequently informed his family. His postmortem was done by the medical board in the presence of a magistrate, and all the procedures were followed. The cause of death will be known once the medical report comes," the SHO said.

Sikh body files FIR against Sukanta for hurling slipper

Kolkata: An FIR was lodged against junior Union minister and Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar at Kalighat police station on Saturday for allegedly hurling a slipper at a Sikh man during a protest on June 12 over the Maheshtala violence. Sri Guru Singh Sabha general secretary Inderjeet Singh Sekhon, who lodged the FIR, said: "Such an act is not only an affront to the Sikh community but also violates the basic fabric of India's constitutional values that ensure respect for all religions and communities. The deliberate nature of the act is clearly visible, leaving no scope for any unintentional justification." The FIR claimed that on June 12, Majumdar threw the slipper at the crossing of Hazra Road and Harish Chatterjee Street. The FIR was lodged under BNS sections 302 (protects individuals from actions intended to harm their religious sentiments) and 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt). Satnam Singh Ahluwalia, general secretary of Gurdwara Behala and member West Bengal Minorities Commission, said: "We demand an unequivocal public apology and strict legal action to ensure accountability. Words alone are not enough—this moment requires decisive steps to show that such acts of disrespect have no place in our society." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Trinamool Congress, which posted the FIR on X, claimed that the Sikh community had "responded with rightful anger" against Majumdar. "They have demanded an immediate and unconditional apology and warned of widespread protests if their voice is ignored," the party wrote. Dismissing the allegation, BJP's Rajya Sabha MP Samik Bhattacharya said Majumdar had only thrown a paper cut-out of a slipper. "The Sikh people are being insulted by planting a concocted story," he said. "People like Majumdar and I grew up learning about the sacrifices of Guru Teg Bahadur and Guru Gobind Singh."

At redressal meetings, police tackle civic and family issues

Panaji: Property disputes, family disputes, money transfers in good faith, encroachment on properties, parking issues, and blocking access by neighbour were some of the issues raised by the public with senior police officers at the Public Grievances Redressal meetings. A total of 25 petitions were submitted, and 100 people attended the meetings at various police stations. 'The complainants were assured of speedy redressal of their grievances,' SP (North) Rahul Gupta said. Gupta said that not caring for senior citizens, property disputes, traffic issues and civil disputes were some of the issues discussed at the meeting. Those who filed complaints and saw no action initiated by police attended the meeting. A deputy superintendent of police (DySP) heard the grievances and directed police to take necessary action to resolve the issues. During the meeting, some people said they gave money in good faith to a person who is now unwilling to return it despite repeated requests. Police told those who borrowed the money to return it to the complainant. In some cases, people raised issues of hardships due to road access being denied. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Police directed parties not to block road access and cause inconvenience to the public, and they agreed to the suggestions made by police. In some matters, families approached police to resolve their family property disputes. Police saw a case wherein one brother feared he might not receive any share in the property as his parents favoured the other brother. Some people raised concerns about encroachments on their properties. On June 21, Gupta will be available at Bicholim police station, SDPO Panaji at Agasaim, SDPO Mapusa at Anjuna, and SDPO Pernem at Mopa. On June 28, he will be available at Colvale, SDPO Porvorim at Saligao, and SDPO Mapusa at Valpoi police station. 'The SDPOs are instructed to hear the grievances and make all possible efforts to resolve issues by giving timely solutions/justice. The SDPOs will maintain a record of visitors attended by them and follow up on the action suggested or directions issued,' the SP said. Additionally, PIs of police stations will be mandatorily available in the police station from 4pm to 6pm every day to redress public grievances. On April 22, Goa police launched 'Samadhan' — aimed to become the ear of the public and help them find an appropriate solution for their grievances, but after some time, it was stopped. Across the state, people were invited to the police stations to discuss their issues with the SDPOs. During the launch of Samadhan, police said it came to their notice that people were unable to meet the SPs and DySPs, so they were approaching the DGP to get their issues resolved.

Facing salary cut for absence, exe engineer accuses DM of assault

Varanasi: An executive engineer of the irrigation department in Azamgarh district, Arun Sachdeva, sent a letter to his senior officers alleging district magistrate Ravindra Kumar misbehaved and assaulted him at his office. The DM, however, refuzed to comment on these allegations. Though the DM did not comment, copies of one of his orders went viral on social media late Saturday evening and it was stated therein that DM and SP went to areas affected by floods annually for inspection on May 25 and Sachdeva, executive engineer of the department's flood division in Azamgarh, was found absent. When officials tried to ascertain his location, Sachdeva was found in Gorakhpur, despite the DM's order not to leave district headquarters without permission from official concerned. His act was termed as indiscipline and violation of the order of a senior officer. The DM ordered to hold back his salary for the May. Sachdeva was also targeted by senior officials as he allegedly avoided providing a list of areas that were affected by floods every year. A letter from Sachdeva, addressed to the head of the irrigation department in Lucknow, went viral on social media on Saturday. In the letter, Sachdeva alleged that the DM summoned him to his camp office on Friday and that he was asked to deposit his mobile phone at the office before entering the DM's chamber. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Walgreens Is Fuming Over New 87¢ Generic Viagra — See Why fridayplans Learn More Undo Sachdeva alleged that the DM assaulted and misbehaved with him. On the other hand, when the DM was contacted, he denied making any comment and stated that he had been sent by govt to accelerate pace of development work and welfare programmes and was doing the same.
