From 'Pyaar Ka Punchnama' to 'The Bhootnii': Sunny Singh is quietly owning Bollywood's comedy space

From the moment he appeared as the lovably confused character in 'Pyaar Ka Punchnama', Sunny Singh caught the audience's attention with his impeccable comic timing and perfect dialogue delivery. In a space often dominated by over-the-top antics, Sunny's style of comedy is refreshing, realistic, with a dash of sarcasm, and endearing innocence. Over the years, he has carved a niche for himself in Bollywood's comedy genre with films like 'Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety', 'Jai Mummy Di', 'Ujda Chaman', and the recent 'The Bhootnii', proving that he's not just the funny guy, but the relatable one. In 'Pyaar Ka Punchnama', Sunny played the role of Chauka, one of the three friends trying to make sense of modern-day relationships. While the film's infamous monologue by Kartik Aaryan went viral, Sunny's contribution lay in his relatable expressions and the subtle yet hilarious way he responded to his friends' chaos. His natural screen presence and effortless timing didn't go unnoticed. The film became his stepping stone, paving the way for his journey up the ladder of success. HAMID BARKZI,ROZLYN KHAN,PRATIK GANDHI & RASHIKA DUGAL AT THE RED CARPET OF 8TH TALENTRACK AWARDS Then came 'Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety;, the film that cemented his place in mainstream comedy. As the naive and trusting Titu, Sunny's restrained performance was the perfect foil to Kartik's high-energy Sonu. His character's simplicity and emotional vulnerability brought balance to the bromance, and his dialogues, especially 'Mujhe toh Sweety sahi lagti hai yaar', sparked countless memes and were repeated in everyday conversations. What stood out was how naturally he embodied the confused, love-struck boy, without ever going over the top. In 'Jai Mummy Di', he stepped into the role of a young man stuck between love and a hilarious family feud. While the film had a chaotic, almost sitcom-like energy, Sunny stood out with his grounded performance. He portrayed frustration and helplessness in a way that wasn't just funny but also highly believable, a boy next door who just wants peace but gets caught in a storm. Ujda Chaman was a departure from his usual comic outings. Here, Sunny played a prematurely balding man dealing with societal judgments. While still a comedy, the film leaned into satire and self-reflection. Sunny brought a layer of sensitivity and depth to his role, showing that he could do more than just punchlines, he could make you laugh and think at the same time. His recent performance in Wild Wild Punjab was another example of how he adapts his style to fit ensemble comedies. Amid the madness of the bachelor party gone rogue, Sunny's understated wit helped bring moments of calm hilarity. And in his recent film The Bhootnii, he once again reminded everyone of his strength, being funny without trying too hard. His expressions, especially in ghostly situations, were priceless. What makes Sunny Singh unique is his ability to be the heart of a comedy without demanding the spotlight! The Times of India editorial team was not involved in the creation of this content. Trainee cop held for ‘taking bribe to settle dowry case'

Meerut: A trainee sub-inspector (SI) was caught red-handed and arrested by a vigilance team for allegedly accepting Rs 1.5 lakh as a bribe to settle a "dowry case" lodged against an Army man on Thursday. The accused, Sunny Singh, solicited the amount to dismiss the case, an officer said, adding that an FIR was registered under the Prevention of Corruption Act at Kankar Khera police station. A senior vigilance officer said the Army man, who is in the Directorate General of public information of the Indian Armed Forces stationed at regional headquarters in Kolkata, approached the vigilance department with the matter. He said that his son works as a manager at a bank in Haldwani. On Feb 18, his wife lodged a dowry harassment complaint. The trainee SI, the investigative officer of the case, allegedly demanded Rs 3 lakh to resolve the matter. After negotiations, they reportedly settled for Rs 1.5 lakh. The Army man added that he approached the vigilance department with an "audio recording of the SI". On Thursday, when the SI, from the 2023 batch and received his first posting at Rohta thana, arrived at the Army man's house to collect the money, the vigilance team waited outside. Sunny Singh: For me, chai is a stress buster, a conversation starter

For actor Sunny Singh, chai is more than just a beverage — it's a "comfort drink". On International Tea Day today, the 39-year-old tells us about his love for chai, calling it a 'stress buster' and a 'conversation starter'. 'Chai makes you feel relaxed. Whether you're working, talking to your friends at a get-together, or on a staycation somewhere in the hills, chai can be a conversation starter kyuki chai pe charcha hoti hi hai. It's amazing how people come together, even those who don't know each other sometimes end up becoming friends over a cup of chai,' he says. Sunny's first memory of having chai goes back to his teenage years, during a family wedding in Punjab. He recalls, 'The first time I had chai was when I was around 16. I was in Jalandhar, attending a cousin's wedding. We were all staying together in a house — multiple families. I remember having gud wali chai (jaggery tea), and I loved it so much I had some four cups, maybe even more, in a day. It became almost like an addiction. Even now, while shooting, after lunch I always have tea with gud.' Ask him about his perfect cup of tea and he shares, "Masala chai is my favourite — milk, elaichi, adrak with some gud. I love it even more if it is served in a kulhar (earthenware cup)," adding, "Also, whenever I go on long drives, I always stop and have cutting chai. There's nothing like the dhaba wali chai.' Reflecting on one of his most cherished memories, Sunny shares: 'In 2003, my friends and I were selected for a photoshoot. I got ₹2000 for that modelling assignment. It was my first pay check. With that, we went to Marine Lines (in Mumbai), had tea, bun and snacks. I saved whatever was left from the money. That's a memory I still hold on to.' Recalling his experience during the shoot of Wild Wild Punjab (2024), Sunny shares how the entire team bonded over chai: 'We were in Chandigarh, and it was winter. All of us — me, (actors) Patralekhaa, Varun Sharma, Jassie Gill, Manjot Singh, Ishita Raj, and the director (Simarpreet Singh) — we used to shoot at night. After wrapping up, we'd all sit together, have chai, each demanding chai with a variation of their own, around a bonfire. We'd chat, joke, laugh — it became a ritual. Then we'd go back to shooting. It was such a beautiful experience. Those moments — sharing laughs, stories, and chai — were beautiful.'

‘The Bhootnii' box office collections day 1: Sanjay Dutt's horror comedy opens with Rs 65 lakhs, Sees moderate occupancy

Sanjay Dutt 's latest horror comedy 'The Bhootnii' has made its theatrical debut with a modest start at the box office. According to early estimates from the Sacnilk website , the film earned Rs 65 lakhs net on Day 1 (Thursday, May 1, 2025), indicating a lukewarm response from audiences despite its unique blend of horror and comedy. Directed by Sidhaant Sachdev, the film stars Sanjay Dutt as Baba, Mouni Roy as Mohabbat, Sunny Singh as Shantanu, Palak Tiwari as Ananya, and YouTuber Nickunj Lotia (BeYouNick) as Sahil. Aasif Khan also plays a key supporting role. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2025 Top Trending local enterprise accounting software [Click Here] Esseps Learn More Undo Occupancy Report and Audience Reception On its opening day, The Bhootnii recorded an overall Hindi occupancy of 18.90%. Mumbai saw a peak during evening shows with 51% occupancy, suggesting a slight upward trend as the day progressed. What lies ahead While the opening day figures are on the lower side, The Bhootnii could see a pickup over the weekend, especially if word-of-mouth plays in its favor. With Sanjay Dutt's fanbase and the genre's appeal among youth, the film's performance in Tier 2 cities and smaller towns could be crucial in the coming days. Our verdict ETimes gave only 2 stars rating for the film and our review reads, 'The film falls short in the horror department, though the comedic elements somewhat compensate for its shortcomings. Sunny Singh, Nikunj Lotia, and Aasif Khan deliver amusing one-liners, and their camaraderie brings occasional laughs. However, their characteristics feel exaggerated and outdated—Sahil is fixated on finding a girlfriend, while Nasir is a wannabe shayar who constantly speaks in Urdu.'
