From 'Pyaar Ka Punchnama' to 'The Bhootnii': Sunny Singh is quietly owning Bollywood's comedy space

Time of India6 days ago

From the moment he appeared as the lovably confused character in 'Pyaar Ka Punchnama',
Sunny Singh
caught the audience's attention with his impeccable comic timing and perfect dialogue delivery.
In a space often dominated by over-the-top antics, Sunny's style of comedy is refreshing, realistic, with a dash of sarcasm, and endearing innocence.
Over the years, he has carved a niche for himself in Bollywood's comedy genre with films like 'Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety', 'Jai Mummy Di', 'Ujda Chaman', and the recent 'The Bhootnii', proving that he's not just the funny guy, but the relatable one.
In 'Pyaar Ka Punchnama', Sunny played the role of Chauka, one of the three friends trying to make sense of modern-day relationships.
While the film's infamous monologue by Kartik Aaryan went viral, Sunny's contribution lay in his relatable expressions and the subtle yet hilarious way he responded to his friends' chaos. His natural screen presence and effortless timing didn't go unnoticed. The film became his stepping stone, paving the way for his journey up the ladder of success.

Then came 'Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety;, the film that cemented his place in mainstream comedy.
As the naive and trusting Titu, Sunny's restrained performance was the perfect foil to Kartik's high-energy Sonu. His character's simplicity and emotional vulnerability brought balance to the bromance, and his dialogues, especially 'Mujhe toh Sweety sahi lagti hai yaar', sparked countless memes and were repeated in everyday conversations.
What stood out was how naturally he embodied the confused, love-struck boy, without ever going over the top.
In 'Jai Mummy Di', he stepped into the role of a young man stuck between love and a hilarious family feud. While the film had a chaotic, almost sitcom-like energy, Sunny stood out with his grounded performance. He portrayed frustration and helplessness in a way that wasn't just funny but also highly believable, a boy next door who just wants peace but gets caught in a storm.
Ujda Chaman was a departure from his usual comic outings.
Here, Sunny played a prematurely balding man dealing with societal judgments. While still a comedy, the film leaned into satire and self-reflection. Sunny brought a layer of sensitivity and depth to his role, showing that he could do more than just punchlines, he could make you laugh and think at the same time.
His recent performance in Wild Wild Punjab was another example of how he adapts his style to fit ensemble comedies.
Amid the madness of the bachelor party gone rogue, Sunny's understated wit helped bring moments of calm hilarity. And in his recent film The Bhootnii, he once again reminded everyone of his strength, being funny without trying too hard. His expressions, especially in ghostly situations, were priceless.
What makes Sunny Singh unique is his ability to be the heart of a comedy without demanding the spotlight!

Sunny Deol Gets Real About 'Jaat', Pressure Post-Gadar 2 & Why He STILL Hates Dancing | EXCLUSIVE The film is backed by the well-known production house behind the Pushpa series, marking their first Hindi-language production. The makers have already confirmed that a sequel is on the way. The movie reportedly crossed around Rs 100 crore worldwide. ETimes reviewed the movie: 'Visually, the film holds its own. Thaman S's background score heightens the drama effectively, and the cinematography offers a gritty, lived-in aesthetic. Action sequences, while often overindulgent, are slick and impactful. The dialogues, penned by Saurabh Gupta and Sai Madhav Burra, are over-the-top and theatrical—often more memorable than the scenes themselves. However, narrative pacing becomes a significant issue post-interval. The second half drags, and the film's 153-minute runtime begins to weigh heavily. A forced item number featuring feels unnecessary and only adds to the film's bloated feel.' On the work front, Sunny is gearing up for the release of 'Border 2'.

Sunny Leone Wraps Debut Hollywood Film, Set To Play UN Soldier

Last Updated: Sunny Leone is set to make her Hollywood debut as a UN peacekeeping soldier in an independent film, releasing next year. After her fair share of acting and hosting gigs in Hindi entertainment, Sunny Leone is all set to make her Hollywood debut with an independent film. Reportedly, she has already completed shooting for the project. The film is expected to release early next year. Shot extensively in international locations, the film unfolds against the backdrop of a post-conflict zone. In a significant shift from her previous roles, Sunny Leone will be seen portraying a United Nations peacekeeping soldier—an avatar she has never taken on before. 'The gritty, action-heavy narrative is a sharp departure from her previous roles, marking an exciting new chapter in her career as she takes on a character layered with strength and emotional depth," a source told India Today. Leaked images from the set have surfaced online, offering fans a glimpse of Sunny in combat mode. In the photos, she is seen dressed in military gear, armed and standing in the midst of a war-torn environment. Another still shows her in a high-tech control room, hinting at the film's intense, action-packed tone. Well, that's not the only achievement in the Kennedy actor's life. Sunny, originally named Karenjit Kaur Vohra, has bought an office space in Oshiwara, Mumbai, for an impressive Rs 8 crore, according to property registration documents. The property is situated in Veer Signature, a commercial project by Veer Group, located in Oshiwara. Other Bollywood stars such as Amitabh Bachchan, Ajay Devgn, Kartik Aaryan, and Sara Ali Khan also own properties in the same building. As per the IGR (Inspector General of Registration) property registration documents reviewed by Square Yards, the office space purchased by Sunny has a carpet area of 176.98 sqm (nearly 1,904.91 sqft) and a built-up area of 194.67 sqm (nearly 2,095 sqft). It also includes three car parking spaces. The transaction incurred a stamp duty payment of Rs 35.01 lakh and registration charges of Rs 30,000. The transaction was registered in February 2025, according to the documents. On the work front, Sunny Leone was last seen hosting MTV's Splitsvilla X5, where she continues to serve as both mentor and anchor. Up next, she's gearing up for a Netflix project and is also working on a handful of ventures in the South Indian film industry. First Published:
