Sunny and seasonal final weekend of Stampede

We are in the homestretch of the Calgary Stampede and Mother Nature is making sure the weather cooperates for the last few days of festivities. However, it wouldn't be the Stampede without a little rain and that's what we saw yesterday with on and off showers throughout the day that moved in from the northwest. In fact, the system brought snow to the higher elevations including at the Sunshine Village ski hill. The rain cooled things off overnight, resulting in single-digit temperatures for Calgary and the surrounding area Friday morning, but high pressure at the surface and aloft will get us back into the high end of the seasonal temperature range by this afternoon with a high of 26C and lots of sun! Sunny and seasonal final weekend of Stampede With so much going on in and around the city, it's important to remember that lots of sun in the summer means an increase in the UV index and today it will get up to 8 which is in the 'very high' range. Sunscreen, hydration and reducing prolonged exposure outside will be a must throughout the weekend. Sunny and seasonal final weekend of Stampede The ridge of high pressure will hold steady over the southern half of the province on Saturday and through much of Sunday, though it will start to deteriorate near the end of the weekend which could produce some strong thunderstorm cells around Calgary and in the southeast. Sunny and seasonal final weekend of Stampede Our next weathermaker moves in on Monday where a steep slope in the Jetstream will bring clouds, rain and cooler temperatures to Calgary on Monday and Tuesday. Expect highs at the beginning of next week to be in the teens. Have a fun and safe Stampede weekend! Yahoo!

Mid-July snow falls on Sunshine Village in Banff National Park

Nothing says mid-July in southern Alberta quite like 'snow day in Sunshine Village'. As improbable as it may seem, the popular Banff ski resort posted images from its webcam at 12:26 p.m. Thursday of snow falling on Goat's Eye Mountain. 'Meanwhile, on top of Goat's Eye,' the resort posted on its Facebook page, 'Yep, this is a live shot taken from our webcam at 12:26 p.m. on Thursday, July 10.' On its website, Environment and Climate Change Canada forecasted a high of 15 degrees for Banff, with a 30 per cent chance of showers.

Sunshine Village welcomes first day of summer with snow

Snow falling in Sunshine Village in Banff National Park on June 21 -- the first day of summer. Heavy rainfall is expected throughout the weekend for the national park. Don't get the skis out just yet, but Sunshine Village got some fresh powder Saturday morning. The popular Banff ski resort posted a photo on its Facebook page at around 7:30 a.m. of a snowy scene there Saturday morning, which happens to be the first day of summer. With heavy rainfall predicted throughout the weekend for Banff and much of southern Alberta, Sunshine's website posted a weather forecast that calls for a high of four degrees, with up to 25 centimetres of snow. According to CTV Calgary's Danielle Savoni, heavy rain and wind is expected throughout Saturday for the city, with 40 to 80 millimetres of rain forecast to fall. In the foothills, there could be 100 mm of rain. Sunday is forecast to be cloudy in Calgary with scattered showers in the area but it should be drier than Saturday. As far as Sunshine Village goes, Saturday's snowstorm might be pretty late in the season, but the ski resort also got a big dump of snow last Aug. 24. Calgary is welcoming 15,000 Rotarians from around the world Saturday who are in the city for a convention at the BMO Centre.

Local program celebrates World Autism Awareness Day

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – April 2 is World Autism Awareness Day, and one local organization is making sure individuals have resources available for people here in western Massachusetts. This day promotes appreciation and understanding for those with autism. Here in the local community, Sunshine Village is helping to make that difference. Every April, organizations like Sunshine Village celebrate World Autism Awareness Day. Bradley International Airport becomes first to earn Autism Double-Checked certification This day serves as a platform to encourage conversations about autism, foster acceptance, and support those through every stage of life. 'Sometimes people who are on the autism spectrum aren't given the recognition that they deserve for all the work that they do to support their community, to be part of our community,' said Gina Kos, Executive Director of Sunshine Village. And at Sunshine Village, they are showing their appreciation for those with autism. 'We are gifting our first responders with handmade goods from the folks that we serve,' Kos said. 'We're celebrating their artwork at local libraries. We're doing all kinds of things to really celebrate people on the autism spectrum.' They will be extending their appreciation efforts throughout the month of April, which is recognized as World Autism Month. Autism is a developmental disorder that affects communication, social interaction, and behavior. According to the CDC, nearly 75 million people have autism spectrum disorder, which is 1% of the world's population. Kos said people on the autism spectrum can absolutely be meaningful members of society and can contribute in so many ways, like through employment. Sunshine Village has helped many secure jobs. 'We bring a group of individuals into a local business with a supervisor so that work can be completed, or if an individual wants to have their own job, we'll help them secure their own job and maintain their own job,' Kos said. 'People with disabilities make great employees.' They also help provide other services like day programs and community engagement initiatives to continue to meet the needs of people with other intellectual disabilities.
