Meet Rep. LaMonica McIver, the Democrat being prosecuted over encounter outside NJ immigration jail

NEWARK, N.J. -- U.S. Rep. LaMonica McIver pleaded not guilty Wednesday to charges she assaulted officials during an oversight visit to an immigration detention center in May. It's a rare federal prosecution against a current member of Congress on charges other than corruption or fraud. Outside court, the congresswoman was defiant, saying the charges won't stop her from doing her job. The 39-year-old Newark, New Jersey, native is in her first full term in Congress, and has garnered more attention than many longer-tenured members. Here's a closer look at the 10th District Democrat: McIver was born in Newark, New Jersey's largest city, and grew up in what Newark Mayor Ras Baraka — who was her elementary school teacher — said was a tough neighborhood. Baraka has become one of her most vocal and highest profile supporter and was in court Wednesday to support her. Federal immigration officials arrested Baraka outside the Delaney Hall detention center on May 9 on a trespassing charge they later dropped. McIver was seen guarding him in video released from the encounter. In an interview, he recalled McIver as a smart student whose mother sent her to help with one of his elections, passing out campaign literature. He recalled running unsuccessfully for years before finally getting elected, and said McIver was at his side for much of it. 'She's the same person in spirit who she was in the fifth and sixth grade,' Baraka said. 'She still has that fight in her, that ability and desire, you know, not to be bullied or pushed around and to, you, know, represent herself, her community—she's still doing that.' McIver attended Bloomfield College and Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey, where she obtained a master's degree. She worked in public education, including stints with Newark and Montclair public schools, and in 2018 was elected to the Newark City Council. She became the council's president in 2022. A measure lowering the voting age to 16 for school board elections in the city passed under her tenure, among others. New Jersey state Senate Majority Leader Teresa Ruiz said she forged a bond with McIver during the COVID-19 pandemic when they attended their daughters' soccer games. They discussed balancing work and life. 'This is a women who loves her family,' Ruiz said. This is woman who loves public office. This is the woman who loves her city, her state and her country." A request for an interview or comment sent to McIver's office was not answered. In 2024 McIver emerged victorious from the Democratic field and won a special election in September after Rep. Donald Payne Jr. died in office. She won a full two-year term in November. LeRoy Jones, who chairs the state Democratic Party as well as its Essex County counterpart, described her as a rising star. She can 'walk with Kings and Queens but still has the common touch,' he said. In Congress, McIver sponsored legislation to remove a cap on shelter expenses that beneficiaries can claim for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program as well as a gun buyback measure aimed at making neighborhoods safer. Neither bill has advanced in the GOP-led House. McIver faces three counts of assaulting, resisting, impeding and interfering with federal officials. If convicted, she could potentially face prison time, though a judge could impose a lesser penalty. McIver's lawyer, former U.S. Attorney for New Jersey Paul Fishman, said Wednesday "she pleaded not guilty because she is not guity." The charges stem from a congressional oversight visit to the center that McIver and Reps. Bonnie Watson Coleman and Rob Menendez undertook that resulted in Baraka's arrest after officials determined he wasn't authorized to enter. Members of Congress are authorized by law to conduct visits. A criminal complaint alleges that she 'slammed' her forearm into an agent and then tried to restrain the agent by grabbing him. The indictment also says she placed her arms around the mayor to try to stop his arrest and says again that she slammed her forearm into and grabbed an agent. A nearly two-minute video clip released by the Homeland Security Department shows McIver at the facility inside a chain-link fence just before Baraka's arrest on the other side of the barrier, where other people were protesting. McIver and uniformed officials go through the gate, and she joins others shouting that they should circle the mayor. The video shows McIver in a tightly packed group of people and officers. At one point, her left elbow and then her right elbow push into an officer.

Meet the makeup artist behind Amanda Seyfried and Julia Roberts' red-carpet moments

When we think of iconic red carpet moments, we picture the faces that grace paparazzi-lined step-and-repeats, the gorgeous gowns that mark a moment in history, and the age-old question: 'Who wore it best?' So when Lancôme offered us the opportunity to hear directly from celebrity makeup artist Genevieve Herr about the inspiration behind some of her A-list clients' looks and how to recreate them ourselves, we couldn't hail a cab fast enough. She's created memorable looks for Anna Wintour, Amanda Seyfried, Connie Britton, and Katie Homes, to name a few. Herr's philosophy is all about 'enhancing what you have already, making it even more beautiful,' she told Alexa. 'Everybody has something to offer.' Herr began her journey after reading an ad in TV Guide about a course in makeup artistry, but her real break came shortly after when her first agent, Timothy Priano, sent her to Anna Wintour's home to do her makeup. When asked if she knew who Wintour was at the time, Herr admitted, 'I had no idea.' Wintour was so impressed that she kept Herr as her personal makeup artist for five years — until Julia Roberts, whom Herr met while working at Susan Sarandon's wedding, stole her away. We spent the afternoon with Herr at the headquarters of L'Oréal, the parent company of Lancôme, founded in 1935, where she shared her top techniques and insights, honed over years of photo shoots, red carpet moments, and iconic award shows. She walked us through her favorite products and even gave us an exclusive preview of some exciting summer launches, soon to be announced on Alexa. 'I'm very light-handed,' Herr told us of her signature look. She advocates for a more 'natural' and 'real' aesthetic and avoids heavily contoured styles. 'I'm not that type, so [the Kardashians] don't hire me,' she joked. 'I don't like to change people's faces. I like to enhance what you have.' 'If I think you'll look good with a bold lip, like Amanda [Seyfried] — Amanda has beautiful lips; I'll go lighter on the eyes and focus more on the lips,' she added, referencing Seyfried's bold lip color at the 2024 Met Gala. Herr's number one go-to product is Lancôme Génifique Face Serum to help create radiant skin as a canvas, especially for aging skin, as it excels in plumping the skin and softening fine lines. Learn more about her favorite beauty products below to get the glam look yourself. Lancôme Instead of reaching for a heavy foundation, Herr opts for Serum Supertint because of its buildable coverage. 'You can put it on with your fingers with a sponge with a brush, so it's very flexible and you can keep building on it.' It has a creamy, lightweight substance that melts gently into your skin for hydrating natural coverage. If you want to add more throughout the day, she recommends spritzing on some rose water to 'freshen up' and dabbing on a little Supertint where needed so it looks flawless after applying. This fast-drying liquid eyeshadow and liner is easy to apply with its two-sided applicator, it can even be used as a blush highlighting the cheek. 'I don't even work with most eyeshadows anymore, I just work with this,' said Herr. Once it's on, it's smudge-resistant and doesn't crease. It truly doesn't get much better than that. Lancôme Herr loves a full-lash look using an extension-lengthening mascara like the Flutter Extension. Her secret to red carpet-ready lashes? 'I use brown instead of black, individual lashes,' she said before applying a black mascara. 'It creates that volume in the lashes without looking so faint. I use it on Julia [Roberts], I use it on almost all my celebrities when they're going to do a red carpet.' Lancôme The secret to long-lasting lip color is all about using lip liners, according to Herr. 'A lot of people don't use them, but it's very important because it keeps the makeup and lipstick in place.' This liner is creamy with a matte finish, plus it's waterproof. Lancôme If there were one serum to rule them all, it would be Lancôme's Advanced Génifique Face Serum. Herr swears by it as her one and only holy grail of skincare products and uses it day and night. It improves skin elasticity and gently reduces fine lines while plumping the skin. Lancôme Although black eyeliner is a fan favorite amongst younger women, Herr suggested lighter shades as women age. 'I would never give black eyeliner to somebody who's a little bit more, you know, older.' Herr said, 'I would always do the brown, or I would suggest the gray.' The Idôle liner has a precise tip that glides on effortlessly and lots of color choices to match your skin. Meghan Markle says she writes Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet emails almost every night to create virtual scrapbooks of their childhoods

Meghan Markle offered a sneak peek into how she's making childhood memories last for her children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. On Monday, the Duchess of Sussex appeared on "The Jamie Kern Lima Show," hosted by the founder of IT Cosmetics. During the episode, Meghan opened up about how she approaches parenting her and Prince Harry's children, Archie, 5, and Lilibet, 3, telling Lima, one of her longtime friends, a favorite way to document her kids' lives. A virtual scrapbook for Archie and Lili Meghan and Lima chatted about their children throughout the episode, with Meghan wearing a sweatshirt with Archie and Lili's names embroidered on it. Lima eventually asked Meghan what she hopes Lili will say about her mother when she grows up. Meghan said she hopes both of her children feel how much she loves them. "I know that they'll feel like, 'Oh my gosh, no one has ever loved someone more than the way our mom loved us,'" Meghan said at the 58-minute mark. "And I put that in practice. That's part of every day, how I show up for them." "I read a lot of parenting books," the duchess added. "I really want to be good at it. I think a lot of stuff comes naturally, and a lot of stuff you can also just, we can all use tools." Meghan also said that she has been writing emails to Archie and Lili almost every night to help ensure they feel her love as they grow older. She explained that she took inspiration from a friend who was doing the same for her children. Meghan described the emails' content as "the things you're not going to frame, the things you're not going to put pen to paper in a journal," but that offer a record of her kids' childhoods. "It doesn't have to be a heavy lift, and you can email them like, 'Here's your report card from today,' or 'Oh my gosh, you said the funniest thing this morning' or 'Here's a picture of you two having breakfast,'" she continued. "I thought it was such a great time capsule to create for them because I still have scrapbooks and photo albums, but we're past that generation now," she said. Meghan said "They will end up at one point in their life, maybe when they're 16 or when they're 18, that I say, here's an email that I've been keeping for you for your whole life," Meghan said. "And here's everything and every moment that I wanted to tell you how much I love you and like how proud I am of you." Partners in parenting Meghan and Harry are raising their children in California, keeping them away from public events since they stepped back as senior royals. Meghan occasionally offers glimpses of her kids on her Instagram, but their faces aren't visible in her shots. Meghan also spoke about her relationship with Harry on "The Jamie Kern Lima Show," saying, "That man loves me so much" at the 54-minute mark. "We've built a beautiful life, and we have two healthy, beautiful children," she said. "I always think about it like the end of 'Super Mario Brothers' when you get to the final, final level. And what's the goal in 'Super Mario?' They're like, 'slay the dragon, save the princess.' I'm like, 'That's my husband.'" "He's just going to do whatever he can to make sure that our family is safe and protected and we're uplifted and still make time for date nights," she said. Meghan and Harry met in 2016 and tied the knot in 2018. They stepped back as senior royals in 2020 and have lived in Montecito, California, ever since. Meghan said on the podcast that she and Harry are in more of a honeymoon phase than ever, describing Harry as "a fox." "My husband's very, very handsome, but his heart is even more beautiful," she said.
