Supekar sought money from prisoner, says BJP MLA Dhas
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: BJP MLA from Ashti in Beed district Suresh Dhas has accused senior IPS officer Jalindar Supekar of demanding money from an undertrial in Amravati prison. When contacted, Superkar said Dhas's allegations were "baseless". A day after levelling the allegation during a public gathering in Ashti, Dhas on Wednesday told TOI: "I was told by a reliable source that Supekar recently demanded Rs 300 crore from a person currently lodged in Amravati jail." Supekar refuted the charges. "These allegations are baseless and defamatory in nature. If he or anyone else is making such claims, they should come out with some evidence," he said. Dhas was addressing a gathering in Ashti area on Tuesday. He said: "Is there anything more unfortunate than an officer at the IG level accepting Rs 1 lakh in cash and a phone worth Rs 50,000? Multiple complaints have reached me about Supekar. Demanding Rs 300 crore from a jail inmate is the latest one." The state home department last week transferred special inspector general of police (prisons) Jalindar Supekar as deputy commandant general of Home Guards in Mumbai in the wake of allegations that the IPS officer had tried to shield the in-laws of alleged dowry death victim Vaishnavi Hagawane and played a role in securing gun licences for her husband, Shashank, brother-in-law, Sushil, and family friend, Nilesh Chavan. Vaishnavi, daughter-in-law of expelled NCP functionary Rajendra Hagawane, was found hanging from a ceiling fan in her marital home in Pune's Bhukum on May 16. The govt action came after social activist Anjali Damania alleged that Supekar, related to Vaishnavi's in-laws, was trying to shield the Hagawane family and played a part in securing firearm licences to Shashank, Sushil and Chavan. She alleged that Chavan got a firearm licence despite having a previous criminal record. Supekar had then denied the allegations. At the Ashti rally, Dhas alleged that Supekar had misused his position to protect relatives of the Hagawane family. "Such people, even if they walk out of jail after years, should be publicly shamed," he said. Supekar declined to comment further on Dhas's remarks and said he was unaware of accusations made during the public speech.

Pune dowry death case: Senior police officer who issued gun licences to Hagawanes, demoted and transferred
Jalinder Supekar, Special Inspector General of Police (Prisons), has been demoted and transferred to the Home Guards as deputy commandant. The state home department passed an order in this regard on Friday. While working as additional commission with the Pune city police a few years before, he had issued the gun licences to the husband and brother-in-law of Vaishnavi Hagawane, who allegedly committed suicide due to harassment for dowry by her in-laws. On Thursday, separate offences were lodged against Vaishnavi's husband Shashank and brother-in-law Sushil Hagawane at the Warje and Kothrud police stations in Pune city, for 'fraudulent representation' of their address by 'deceptive means' for taking gun licences. Police said the duo were residing in the jurisdiction of Pune rural police, but obtained licences from Pune city police, by allegedly submitting documents showing them as residents of Warje and Kothrud. It is learnt that Supekar is a relative of an accused in Vaishnavi Hagawane dowry death case. So Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday said the state government will inquire into Supekar's role in issuing weapons licences to members of the Hagawane family. 'We have received complaints about it and have started enquiring into it. Some decisions (about Supekar) have been taken to ensure there is no influence or interference in the investigation of the death of Vaishnavi,' Fadnavis said after a book release function in the city. When asked about the large number of weapons licences issued in Pune in the last two years, Fadnavis said the state government will look into this and cancel those that have been illegally issued. Speaking about the arrest of Nilesh Chavan, who is accused of cruelty towards Vaishnavi Hagwane's 10-month-old son, from the Nepal border, the Chief Minister said Chavan was planning to escape to Nepal but was nabbed by police after getting proper intelligence inputs. 'I had been told that no one will be spared in the case. There will be no negligence tolerated and our efforts would be to ensure strict punishment to the accused,' he said. Chavan had taken custody of Vaishnavi's 10-month-old child after the arrest of expelled NCP leader Rajendra Hagawane and his family and refused to give custody to the parents of Vaishnavi. However, he later escaped and the child's custody was given to Vaishnavi's parents. Speaking about the Ladki Bahin scheme, the CM said the state government was implementing it and had found that few ineligible people took benefit of the scheme so they were being removed from the list of beneficiaries

In short-term, Maha plans more barracks, bail reform to decongest jails
Nagpur: Alongside the infrastructure overhaul, the Maharashtra govt is implementing a multi-pronged short-term plan to reduce overcrowding in prisons. In a detailed affidavit submitted to the Maharashtra State Human Rights Commission, inspector general of prisons, Jalindar Supekar, revealed a series of measures, including the construction of new barracks and bail relief for undertrial prisoners. The immediate focus is on barrack expansion within existing facilities, with several projects under way or recently approved. The affidavit, which was later submitted to the Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court, disclosed that nine new barracks with a combined capacity of 200 inmates were sanctioned at Yerwada Central Prison in 2023-24. Additionally, 100-capacity barracks at Yerwada Open Women Prison and 200-capacity units at Yerwada Open Prison are under construction. These works are expected to be completed in the next six months. Similar expansion is under way at Nagpur Central Prison, Solapur, Satara, Yavatmal and Buldhana jails. These expansions will add 1,370 inmate spaces across the state. For 2025-26, proposals have been sent for 67 new barracks in 12 prisons, including facilities in Amravati, Chandrapur, Akola, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Sindhudurg, Kolhapur, Thane, Nashik Road and Kalyan. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo These units are expected to house an additional 2,754 inmates. According to Supekar, the govt is committed to fast-tracking these projects to mitigate the immediate crisis of prisoner overcrowding and uphold human rights standards. Central scheme wins freedom for 41 inmates
Pune: A total of 41 undertrial prisoners (UTPs) and convicts walked out of state prisons after receiving bail under a centrally funded initiative introduced in 2024. Known as Poor Prisoners' Scheme , it assists impoverished inmates who remain incarcerated due to their financial inability to pay fines or secure bail. The state prison authorities confirmed that a four-member empowered committee across various districts had identified 35 UTPs and 2 convicts in 2024, followed by four UTPs in 2025 as eligible recipients. Subsequently, Rs 5.54 lakh was submitted to the courts to facilitate their release on bail. The state's jails have a total population of 39,009. The scheme aims to decongest prisons in the days to come. Special inspector general (prisons) Jalindar Supekar told TOI, "A large number of prisoners are languishing in 60 jails for a considerable period of time even after they were granted bail and pleaded guilty in petty criminal cases because they cannot engage the services of lawyers and fulfil bail conditions due to their poor economic conditions." "After the central govt scheme to release poor prisoners on bail came into effect, we issued instructions to state jail superintendents to secure copies of the bail orders from the courts and ensure that maximum prisoners get the benefit of the scheme. Courts also inform the jails if the accused is not in a position to fulfil bail conditions," Supekar said. He said that jail superintendents, through the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), identify prisoners eligible under the scheme and recommend their names to the district-wise empowered committee for a final decision. The prisons department received funds of Rs 9.27 lakh and Rs 7.5 lakh from the govt in 2024 and 2025 for implementing the scheme, he added. DLSA member Sonal Patil said, "First-time offenders involved in theft, cheating, robbery, among other cases, are granted bail. We conduct inquiries as to why they are unable to furnish surety for securing bail. To examine their financial capacity, we render services of civil representatives or NGOs, probationary officers, revenue officers, and social workers and identify the beneficiaries. We submit the list to the empowered committee because they are authorised to pay fines up to Rs 25,000 and cash surety up to Rs 40,000." Patil said the prisons department gave us a voluminous list of prisoners, but our office minutely scrutinised the list, checked their criminal antecedents, and identified first-time offenders. Prisoners involved in multiple crimes and habitual offenders are not considered under the scheme, she added.
