Super 16 college softball rankings: Oklahoma makes statement dominating rival Texas
Texas has an Oklahoma problem. Then again, all of college softball might. The four-time defending national champion Sooners made quite the statement last week, sweeping the top-ranked Longhorns and continuing an extraordinary run against Texas. Since 2015, OU softball and Texas have played 39 times. Regular season. Conference tournament. NCAA Tournament. Advertisement The Sooners have won all but three of those games. Yes, a 36-3 record. This past weekend was an extension of that domination, but it was also a warning to the entire sport: The Sooners, who took over the top spot in The Oklahoman's College Softball Super 16, have grown claws. With the departure of 10 seniors from last year's squad, this year's team was bound to have some growing pains. Even though the Sooners went through non-conference play and the first two weekends of SEC play without a loss, struggles were bound to come. And they did. A loss at Missouri. A series loss at home to Tennessee. Another series loss, this time at Alabama. Advertisement But the offense, problematic during most of those losses, has come alive. It scored a combined 23 runs in three games against Texas' vaunted pitching staff. The Longhorns know firsthand how dangerous the Sooners are. The rest of the sport might want to take note, too. Here's a look at this week's Super 16: More: Could OU softball play Texas at Cotton Bowl? Dublin will join Tyrone, Roscommon and Monaghan as third seeds for Sam Maguire Cup draw
This weekend's Munster and Connacht winners could host Dublin in less than three weeks depending on Tuesday's Sam Maguire Cup draw. Due to take place on the GAA's YouTube channel at 1.30pm, Dublin's defeat to Meath in Sunday's Leinster SFC semi-final means they will be third seeds when the composition of the four groups of four teams becomes clearer. In the third and final year of the 'Super 16' format, the third seeds will again begin their All-Ireland campaign with a trip to one of the provincial champions. The Connacht and Munster winners will return to action on their own soil against one of Dublin, Tyrone, Roscommon or Monaghan on the weekend of May 17/18. The following weekend, the Leinster and Ulster champions will each face one of the aforementioned quartet. Repeat pairings are not avoided in the draw therefore Dublin could again face The Royals, Armagh lock horns with Tyrone for a second time and Cork once more meet Kerry in the All-Ireland group stages. If that is the case and Kerry retain their Munster title, John Cleary's side as confirmed fourth seeds will again have home advantage in the second round on May 31 or June 1. Where Dublin play their home game in Round 2 against provincial runners-up at the end of May will be interesting. Croke Park would be the expected choice but the drop-off in support may compel the county board to consider Parnell Park. Three teams will again emerge from each group for the knock-out stages. Last year, Derry and Roscommon qualified for them despite losing three of four games. Monaghan also reached the All-Ireland preliminary quarter-final winning just one of their quartet of championship outings. Clare are the only team outside the top two divisions to compete in this year's Sam Maguire Cup proper. Down join them in Division 3 next year but have also earned their place in the elite 16 by virtue of their 2024 Tailteann Cup success. In the two previous iterations of the 'Super 16', The Banner have not gone beyond the group stages. Louth and Sligo in 2023 are the other provincial runners-up not to qualify for the last 12. No first seed (provincial winners) has yet failed to make the knock-out phase, while Cork are the only team to have upset the odds as fourth seeds to come out of their respective group on both previous occasions. Only two other counties have done so, Donegal and Kildare in 2023. For the third year in a row, 13 of the 16 teams remain the same – Armagh, Clare, Cork, Derry, Donegal, Dublin, Galway, Kerry, Louth, Mayo, Monaghan, Roscommon and Tyrone. Westmeath's relegation to Division 3 and inability to make a Leinster final means they miss out having played in the previous two Sam Maguire Cups. The GAA has agreed to change the structure from next year when the Sam Maguire and Tailteann Cups will work on a qualifier-like basis. In the former, the eight provincial finalists will face off against the seven teams seeded on their league finishes and the 2025 Tailteann Cup winners. The winners will go into a separate second round with the victors going through to the All-Ireland quarter-finals and the four defeated counties meeting the four winners of the losers's side of the second round in preliminary quarter-finals to fill the remaining four spots in the last eight. What Is The Best Cinema Format To Watch The Movie Sinners?
Ryan Coogler holding Ultra Panavision 65mm film stock in his YouTube video on aspect ratios. Here at Forbes, I regularly write articles discussing all the available formats for upcoming films and deciding what the best format to choose is. Things are a bit different for Sinners, however, as the film's director, Ryan Coogler, has done my job for me, by doing exactly that for his own movie with an explanatory video on Kodak's YouTube channel. Speaking in current parlance — I have never been so 'seen'. Despite being much cooler than I could hope to be, it's a delight to see what a film format nerd he is – and we're here for that. He starts with a brief description of the different types of film stock used to shoot movies and then goes on to explain all the formats in which you can watch Sinners. In the video, he demonstrates each type of film stock, from Super 8 to Super 16 (on which he shot his first feature-length film, Fruitvale Station, also starring Michael B. Jordan), before moving on to 35mm, 65mm, and finally IMAX 70mm, explaining the difference between them. While describing film stock in one thing, it's great to see it (it's almost as if a picture is worth a thousand words). As Coogler explains so engagingly, Sinners was shot on Ultra Panavision 70, (65mm film with anamorphic lenses, creating a super-wide aspect ratio 2.76.1 aspect ratio) and IMAX 70mm. This marks the first time a movie has been released in both formats. The switch from ultra-wide 2.76:1 to super tall 1.43:1, (when viewed in a suitable theatre) is dramatic. He also mentions the sound mix, which is important in a movie where music is intrinsic to the story, so it's worth seeking out a theater with great sound if you can. Coogler then goes on to describe what he refers to as the 'specialty formats'. First is 4DX, which involves seats that move and thump in sync with the action, blasts of air and flashing lights. Sinners is a rare example of a movie that should work well in both conventional formats and novelty formats such as 4DX. In this format, you often get splashed by water, but Coogler jokingly says that this time it might be a red liquid! I assume he's joking… Next up is a format called ICE, which, I must admit, is a format of which I was not previously aware, likely because it's not available in the UK. It involves several panels running down the sides of the theatre that show extra images from the movie. Coogler describes it as immersive, so we'll have to take his word for it. ScreenX is similar in that it also shows images down the sides of the theatre, though these are two full walls that run halfway or so into the theatre, rather than separate panels. As the image is already super wide, I'd be curious to know where this extra footage comes from, but with Coogler involved it's hopefully a worthwhile addition to the experience. Coogler gets more enthused though when talking about Dolby Cinema. This uses dual lasers to create an extra bright image, allowing for a greater dynamic range than standard projected images. Coogler refers to it as high dynamic range, but it's more accurate to think of it as extended dynamic range. (HDR by Barco is the only format to offer true HDR in cinemas but it doesn't get a mention by Coogler, even though Sinners will have a very limited release in this format). As well as deep blacks and bright whites Dolby Cinema also includes Dolby Atmos audio, so it's an excellent format to choose for Sinners. The other format that doesn't get mentioned is the "standard" digital premium large formats (PLFs), which are branded as Odeon iSense, Regal RPX, Cinemark XD, and others. These offer a large wall-to-wall screen, 4K projection, Dolby Atmos sound and upgraded seats. Ryan Coogler's YouTube video on aspect ratios clearly gets across the difference between Ultra ... More Panavision 2.76:1 and IMAX 70mm framing. The format that Coogler really wants you to see the movie in though is IMAX. Shot with IMAX film cameras, in IMAX screens with a 1.43:1 screen it will expand to fill the entire screen for select sequences of 'intense action' – amounting to 28 minutes of the run time. There are only 10 theatres worldwide that will have the triumvirate of an IMAX film projector, a 1.43:1 screen and an IMAX 70mm film print of the movie. If you're lucky enough to be able to get to one, this is the ultimate way to see the movie. You can see Coogler getting emotional when he talks about it. 'If you can afford it, then check it out in this format – it means a lot.' If you aren't close to an IMAX with a film projector there is still a chance to see it in 1.43:1. IMAX theaters with a dual-laser projector and a 1.43:1 screen can also show the expanded aspect ratio scenes in full 1.43:1 and there are 19 theatres worldwide that will be doing this. In all other digital IMAX screens the film will switch between 2.76:1 and the native 1.90:1 screen shape. The final format that Coogler talks about are the theatres that will be getting a 70mm film print. While there will be no expanding aspect ratios Coogler says he took care to optimize for this, as this is how most people will see it. This is technically the rarest format, with a mere five theaters getting prints, all of which are in the US. Ultimately, in whatever format you can get to, I'd recommend going to see the film, which is beautifully shot by its cinematographer Autumn Durant Akrapaw and is dramatic, scary, and thrilling. Sinners was a brave choice for Coogler, as rather than going straight to directing another Marvel sequel, he's made a bold and creative decision to create something new, which is a brave choice when cinema is struggling to get bums on seats. I believe it has artistically paid off—we can only hope it does well enough at the box office for the studios to green-light more projects like it in the future.

ISU advances to WNIT quarterfinals
BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (WMBD/WYZZ) — The Illinois State women were comfortable in the home of the Illinois Wesleyan Titans. ISU beat Abilene Christian, 78-68, in the Super 16 of the WNIT in a game played at IWU's Shirk Center on Thursday. A scheduling conflict at CEFCU Arena prevented ISU from hosting the postseason tournament game at home so the Redbirds moved the game down the road to a friendly neighbor. The Redbirds (23-12) will host Louisiana Tech back at CEFCU in the tournament quarterfinals on Monday at 6 p.m. Shannon Dowell scored 28 points to lead the way. It's her fifth consecutive game scoring 20 or more points. The game was tied at halftime, but the Redbirds scored 45 points in the second half, making 15 of their 23 field goals (65.2%). Elyse Knudsen hit four three-pointers and added 16 points for ISU. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Super 16 college softball rankings: South Carolina makes believers with perfect start
South Carolina softball adopted a social-media hashtag this season. #MakeThemBelieve. The Gamecocks are doing just that. This weekend, they swept a three-game series against Duke, won those games by an average of 4.6 runs and improved to 19-0 this season. Their strong showing earned them a spot in The Oklahoman's Super 16 college softball rankings. South Carolina is one of nine SEC teams in the Super 16, including Texas, Oklahoma, Florida and LSU holding the top four spots in the poll. Of the SEC teams in the rankings, South Carolina might just be the biggest surprise. A year ago, the Gamecocks finished 34-26 and won only eight conference games. Longtime head coach Beverly Smith was not retained after the season. Ashley Chastain Woodard was hired from Charlotte and brought six of her players with her to South Carolina. Chastain Woodard's biggest get from the portal, however, has been Oklahoma transfer Quincee Lilio. She is hitting .569, the third-highest batting average in the country, and powering an offense that is scoring 8.8 runs a game, sixth best nationally. South Carolina opens SEC play this weekend with a three-game series at Oklahoma.
