Super 16 college softball rankings: South Carolina makes believers with perfect start
South Carolina softball adopted a social-media hashtag this season.
#MakeThemBelieve.
The Gamecocks are doing just that. This weekend, they swept a three-game series against Duke, won those games by an average of 4.6 runs and improved to 19-0 this season. Their strong showing earned them a spot in The Oklahoman's Super 16 college softball rankings.
South Carolina is one of nine SEC teams in the Super 16, including Texas, Oklahoma, Florida and LSU holding the top four spots in the poll.
Of the SEC teams in the rankings, South Carolina might just be the biggest surprise. A year ago, the Gamecocks finished 34-26 and won only eight conference games. Longtime head coach Beverly Smith was not retained after the season.
Ashley Chastain Woodard was hired from Charlotte and brought six of her players with her to South Carolina. Chastain Woodard's biggest get from the portal, however, has been Oklahoma transfer Quincee Lilio. She is hitting .569, the third-highest batting average in the country, and powering an offense that is scoring 8.8 runs a game, sixth best nationally.
South Carolina opens SEC play this weekend with a three-game series at Oklahoma.

One specific area Alabama's defense must address to be a contender in 2025, expert says
One specific area Alabama's defense must address to be a contender in 2025, expert says The start of the 2025 college football season is 78 days away, and 85 days remain until the Alabama Crimson Tide open the season against the Florida State Seminoles in Tallahassee. While SEC commissioner Greg Sankey and others are still trying to re-legislate Alabama's absence from last year's College Football Playoff, only 12 Saturdays remain until Alabama-FSU. Both teams are looking for bounce-back years in 2025. The Crimson Tide want to improve on a 9-3 regular season in Kalen DeBoer's first year, which included a blowout loss to Oklahoma in Week 13 that ultimately kept Alabama from reaching the first-ever 12-team playoff field. Florida State is in need of a hard reset. Mike Norvello's Seminoles followed up their 12-0 regular season and ACC championship from 2023 with a woeful 2-10 record last year that featured only one win vs. a Power Four school. One potential concern for Alabama heading into 2025? CBS Sports and 247Sports analyst Brad Crawford believes it's on defense -- more specifically, the need for Kane Wommack's unit to establish a pass rush. Per Crawford: "Make no mistake -- this should be a stout defense for the Crimson Tide, especially considering cornerbacks tandem Zabien Brown and Domani Jackson are being discussed as one of the best in the conference. But if there's one area of concern, it's the ability to produce havoc numbers on the interior and edge since Alabama's inexperienced beyond James Smith and nose tackle Tim Keenan III. The Crimson Tide need a difference-making campaign out of LT Overton, who has best-in-the-conference type of potential." Overton was recently named to the 2025 Lott IMPACT Trophy Watch List, along with linebacker Deontae Lawson. Lawson's 76 tackles were second on the team last year behind linebacker Jihaad Campbell, who departed for the NFL after a terrific junior season. Alabama's pass rush generated 25 sacks for 172 sacks yards. That ranked only 69th in FBS and was 14th out of the 16 SEC schools. Year 2 of the DeBoer era in Tuscaloosa will coincide with Alabama's first ever visit to Doak Campbell Stadium on Aug. 30. The Crimson Tide and Seminoles will kick off at 2:30 p.m. CT on ABC. Alabama is No. 9 in Crawford's post-spring top 25 rankings. ESPN and USA TODAY Sports also have the Crimson Tide at No. 9 in their respective post-spring rankings.

How Missouri football trolled Georgia without winning a game against UGA in a decade
How Missouri football trolled Georgia without winning a game against UGA in a decade The Missouri Tigers and Georgia Bulldogs won't be playing each other during the 2025 college football season unless the two teams meet in the SEC championship or College Football Playoff. That did not stop Missouri from trolling Georgia in a recent social media post. In a series of pictures, Missouri tabbed "the photo we recently hesitate to post" versus "the photo we posted in 2013 with absolutely zero hesitation." The Tigers included one picture of Missouri's 41-26 defeat of Georgia. Missouri's 2013 win over Georgia helped the Tigers climb the SEC East standings and advance to the SEC championship where Missouri lost to Auburn. Missouri's upset of No. 7 Georgia and star quarterback Aaron Murray derailed Georgia's season. The Missouri game was Georgia's second loss of the year and essentially crushed UGA's national championship hopes. Of course, the next week Georgia lost at Vanderbilt, which cemented the Dawgs' disappointing season after losing in the 2012 SEC championship and coming five yards short of a national championship appearance the year before. Georgia fans can cheer up though. The Bulldogs have won 10 straight games against Missouri. In 2016, Georgia hired coach Kirby Smart and began to dominate the SEC East. The Bulldogs won national titles in 2021 and 2022 to erase a lot of the heartbreak for Georgia's fan base. Missouri's post trolling Georgia Note: the image is all the way to the right on the post. Missouri has not beaten Georgia since 2013. Georgia has dominated the series, but Missouri has made strides in recent seasons. Georgia is 11-1 since Missouri joined the SEC, but the teams no longer face each other annually as SEC East rivals in the expanded 16-team SEC.

Nets to work out Tennessee's Chaz Lanier ahead of 2025 NBA Draft
The Brooklyn Nets still have a couple of months before they have to figure out what they are going to with their picks in the upcoming 2025 NBA Draft in June. As of this writing, Brooklyn has five draft picks, meaning that they will have plenty of players to sift through and one way to do that is to bring prospective players in for workouts ahead of the Draft. The Nets will be bringing in Tennessee guard Chaz Lanier for a predraft workout on Thursday, according to ClutchPoints' Erik Slater on Wednesday. Lanier is regarded as one of the best shooters in the class as he shot 39.5% from three-point land this past season for Tennessee and had that kind of accuracy from deep on 8.2 attempts per game. Advertisement Lanier, listed at 6-foot-4 and 206 pounds, seems to be regarded as a player that will definitely be taken in the second of the Draft if Jonathan Wasserman's latest mock draft for Bleacher Report is any indication. Wasserman predicted that Lanier would be taken by the Detroit Pistons with the 37th overall pick, implying that Lanier should be safely-regarded as a player to not last deep into the second round. "Chaz Lanier finished second at the NBA combine in aggregate shooting, unsurprising based on his 229 made threes over the past two seasons. NBA teams that could use more offensive firepower will look past age and lack of versatility for such advanced shotmaking," Wasserman wrote. Lanier, who Wasserman compares to Seth Curry and Alex Burks, would be a player for the Nets to target after they finished last season shooting just 34.4% from deep, good for 25th in the league. Lanier had quite the senior season for the Volunteers as he was named a Wooden All-American as well as being named All-SEC. Lanier came away from the 2024-25 season after averaging 18.0 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game while shooting 43.1% from the field and the aforementioned 39.5% behind the three-point arc. Brooklyn has the 36th overall pick to use in the second round if Lanier impresses in his workout.
