Heartbreak for top seeds Soon Huat-Shevon in Singapore Open exit
KUALA LUMPUR: Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai's hopes of reclaiming the Singapore Open mixed doubles crown were dashed after they fell short in the quarter-finals on Friday. The world No. 5 and top seeds went down fighting to their familiar Thai rivals Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Supissara Paewsampran 19-21, 22-20, 21-17 in a three-game battle at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. Soon Huat-Shevon were agonisingly close to sealing the win in straight games, having led 19-17 and holding a match point at 20-19 in the second, only to let the opportunity slip as the world No. 8 Thais forced a decider. It was the seventh career meeting between the two pairs in a short span of eight months, with the Thais now edging ahead 4-3 in the head-to-head. Soon Huat-Shevon had won their last encounter and were bidding for back-to-back victories over Dechapol-Supissara for the first time. The Singapore Open has been upgraded to a Super 750 tournament since 2023 - a step up from when Soon Huat-Shevon won it in 2018, then classified as a Super 500 event.

Wei Chong-Kai Wun end Malaysia's 12-year drought [WATCH]
KUALA LUMPUR: Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun ended the nation's 12-year drought at the Malaysia Masters by upstaging seniors Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik in a pulsating final at the Axiata Arena today. World No. 8 Wei Chong-Kai Wun took advantage of an exhausted world No. 3 Aaron-Wooi Yik to carve out a 21-12, 15-21, 21-16 win in 50 minutes to capture their first crown on home soil. The victory made up for Wei Chong-Kai Wun finishing runners-up at the 2023 Malaysia Masters, but most importantly, it was the country's first title in the Super 500 tournament since Goh V Shem-Lim Khim Wah's triumph in 2013. Wei Chong-Kai Wun had bagged three Super 300 titles (2022 Syed Modi International and 2022-2023 Taiwan Opens) and the Super 500 Indonesia Masters in January before today's victory at the Axiata Arena. At the other end, Aaron-Wooi Yik were gutted in their bid to achieve an unprecedented hat-trick by a Malaysian pair on the world stage, having won the Badminton Asia Championships in China last month and the Thailand Open last week. After playing back-to-back finals, the mental and physical exhaustion was evident though Aaron-Wooi Yik produced a gritty performance, only to lose to their equally determined teammates. The close battle was not entirely surprising as the head-to-head record of the two pairs stood at 2-2 with their last encounter going Wei Chong-Kai Wun's way in the Indonesia Masters semi-final (21-18, 21-15) in January. Wei Chong-Kai Wun had also beaten Aaron-Wooi Yik (21-11, 21-18) in the first round of the 2023 Arctic Open. Aaron-Wooi Yik had won 23-21, 21-10 at the 2023 India Open first round and 21-23, 21-17, 21-16 at the Denmark Open second round. Wei Chong said: "After winning the Indonesia Masters, our results dropped and the same things happened in previous years whenever we won titles or reached finals. "Discussing and communicating with each other have made things better. We knew their game will be affected a little (Aaron-Wooi Yik were tired) but we didn't think about becoming champions but focused on our own performance." Kai Wun said they are adapting well to national men's doubles coach Herry IP's training. "We are slowly getting used to coach Herry's gameplay and we were also mentally prepared to do better after losing (in the second round) last week at the Thailand Open." Aaron admitted that Wei Chong-Kai Wun played better than them. "We also made a lot of unforced errors. It (the result) is acceptable but there is a lot to improve on." Wooi Yik said: "Our condition was not 100 per cent but it was not the reason for us to lose today." RESULTS FINALS: Malaysians unless stated Men's singles: Li Shi Feng (Chn) bt K. Srikanth (Ind) 21-11, 21-9 Doubles: Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun bt Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik 12-21, 21-15, 21-16 Women's singles: Wang Zhi Yi (Chn) bt Han Yue (Chn) 13-21, 21-13, 21-18 Doubles: Liu Sheng Shu-Tan Ning (Chn) bt Jia Yi Fan-Zhang Shu Xian (Chn) 21-17, 21-18 Mixed doubles: Feng Yan Zhe-Huang Dong Ping (Chn) bt Jiang Zhen Bang-Wei Ya Xin (Chn) 21-17, 14-21, 21-16 Previous Next

Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun end 12-year wait for Malaysia Masters men's doubles title
KUALA LUMPUR: Men's doubles pair Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun stunned their higher-ranked compatriots Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik to claim their first title on home soil at the Malaysia Masters today (May 25). Wei Chong-Kai Wun (world No. 8) took advantage of a tired Aaron-Wooi Yik (world No. 3) to secure a 21-12, 15-21, 21-16 win in 50 minutes at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil and erase the disappointment of losing in the 2023 final. They are the first local pair in 12 years to win the Malaysia Masters men's doubles crown since Goh V Shem-Lim Khim Wah's success in 2013. It was Wei Chong-Kai Wun's fifth World tour title of their career and second Super 500 triumph after winning the Indonesia Masters in January. Aaron-Wooi Yik were frustrated as their bid to win a hat-trick of titles on the trot was halted. They had won the Badminton Asia Championships (BAC) title in China last month and secured the Super 500 Thailand Open in Bangkok last week. Wei Chong-Kai Wun pocketed US$37,525.00 (RM158,750) for their win while Aaron-Wooi Yik settled for US$18,050 (RM76,360).

The last time he featured in a championship match was at the 2021 BWF World Championships, where he claimed silver following a loss to Loh Kean Yew of Singapore. Viktor Axelsen defeated him in the 2019 India Open, a Super 500 tournament, where he had previously made an appearance in a BWF World Tour final. Srikanth's last taste of international victory, however, dates all the way back to the 2017 French Open — a reminder of how long it's been since he stood atop a podium. His semi-final victory also earned him a rare feat—Srikanth is now just the second male player ever to reach a BWF World Tour Super 500 final starting from the qualifiers. The first? None other than his upcoming opponent, Li Shifeng, who achieved the same at the 2022 Thailand Open. A big moment for 🇮🇳 Kidambi Srikanth!
