Will Barcelona's Pedro Fernández Sarmiento get minutes in La Liga this new season
As the 2025–26 La Liga season approaches, Barcelona fans are buzzing with excitement about the club's rising stars, and one name stands out: Pedro Fernández Sarmiento, better known as 'Dro.' At just 17 years old, this attacking midfielder from La Masia has already shown immense promise, most notably scoring his first senior goal for Barcelona in a pre-season friendly against Vissel Kobe in Japan on July 27, 2025. But the big question remains: will Pedro Fernández Sarmiento get meaningful minutes in La Liga next season? Let's explore his journey and the factors that could influence his playing time. Who Is Pedro Fernández Sarmiento? Pedro Fernández Sarmiento, born on January 12, 2008, in Nigrán, Spain, is a 17-year-old attacking midfielder currently playing for FC Barcelona's U19 squad. Known for his flair, vision, and goal-scoring ability, Dro has been a standout talent since his early days at the Val Minor School, where he trained for nearly a decade before joining Barcelona's prestigious La Masia academy. His nickname, 'Dro,' reflects his dynamic playing style, which has drawn comparisons to some of the club's legendary midfielders. In the 2024–25 season, Fernández played primarily for Barcelona's Juvenil B team in the Liga Nacional and the U19 squad in the División de Honor. His standout performance in the pre-season friendly against Vissel Kobe, where he scored, has put him on the radar of first-team coaches and fans alike. With dual Spanish and Filipino citizenship, Dro's versatility and global appeal add to his growing reputation. Factors Influencing Pedro Fernández's La Liga Minutes Several factors will determine whether Pedro Fernández Sarmiento earns significant playing time in La Liga during the 2025–26 season. Let's break them down: 1. Competition in Barcelona's Midfield Barcelona's midfield is stacked with talent, including established stars like Frenkie de Jong, Gavi, and Pedri, as well as emerging players like Fermín López. For a 17-year-old like Dro to break into this lineup, he'll need to outperform his peers in training and seize any opportunities in cup competitions or less critical league matches. His ability to play as an attacking midfielder or forward gives him positional flexibility, which could help him secure substitute appearances. 2. Barcelona's Youth Integration Strategy Barcelona has a rich history of promoting La Masia talents to the first team, with players like Lionel Messi, Xavi, and Andrés Iniesta as prime examples. In recent years, young stars like Lamine Yamal and Alejandro Balde have also made the leap. Under head coach Hansi Flick, who has shown a willingness to trust young players, Dro could benefit from this philosophy. His pre-season goal against Vissel Kobe demonstrates that the coaching staff is already giving him chances to shine. 3. Injuries and Squad Rotation The 2025–26 season will see Barcelona competing in La Liga, the Copa del Rey, the Supercopa de España, and the UEFA Champions League. With a packed schedule, injuries and fatigue are inevitable, creating opportunities for young players like Fernández to step up. If he continues to impress in training and friendly matches, he could earn cameo appearances or even starts in lower-stakes games. Will Dro Get Minutes? While it's unlikely that Pedro Fernández Sarmiento will become a regular starter in the 2025–26 La Liga season, there's a strong chance he'll see some minutes, especially in cup competitions or as a substitute in league matches. His pre-season goal, La Masia pedigree, and Barcelona's commitment to youth development all point to a bright future. Fans should keep an eye on Dro's performances in the División de Honor and UEFA Youth League, as these will likely determine how soon he makes his La Liga debut. For the latest updates on Pedro Fernández Sarmiento and Barcelona's 2025–26 season, stay tuned to official club channels and trusted football news outlets. Barcelona clinches 28th LaLiga title all time, third trophy this season
Barcelona clinched its 28th LaLiga title, capping off a season in which the Catalan club won three domestic trophies under first-year manager Hansi Flick. Thursday's 2-0 win over local rivals Espanyol ensured Barcelona would finish ahead of Real Madrid in the standings with just over two weeks left in the season. It's also the third time this season that Barcelona clinched silverware at Madrid's expense. The Blaugrana had already won the Copa del Rey on April 26 — a 3-2 win over Los Blancos in Seville — as well as a 5-2 win in the Supercopa de España final on Jan. 12 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Along with two wins in league play, Barcelona won all four clashes against its Clásico rivals this season. Flick now adds a Spanish title to his managerial résumé in his first season at Barcelona. The German had previously led Bayern Munich to two Bundesliga crowns and the 2020 Champions League trophy. Barcelona were led by playmakers Robert Lewandowski (25 goals) and Raphinha (18 goals), but the team's revelation this season was arguably Lamine Yamal, the 17-year-old sensation who was also part of Spain's Euro 2024 championship team. In 52 games across all competitions this season, Yamal scored 24 goals for the Catalans. The only blemish to Barcelona's season was falling short in the Champions League, bowing out to Inter Milan in the knockout rounds. Despite a return to the competition's semifinals for the first time since 2019, Barça has not lifted Europe's preeminent club trophy since 2015. Madrid entered this season with lofty expectations after winning a 36th LaLiga title and 15th Champions League crown (both records) last May. The club followed that up by signing Kylian Mbappé but will finish the campaign without a major trophy. The club will also see the departure of Carlo Ancelotti, who'll take over as the Brazil men's national team manager ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox?
