Former Nebraska volleyball coach John Cook joined the Omaha Supernovas professional volleyball team as a co-owner and general manager. This announcement was made on Wednesday by Major League Volleyball.
The former coach announced his retirement from the Nebraska volleyball program in January. He had 25 years of success, winning four national championships, going to 12 NCAA semifinals, and winning 14 conference championships. He ended his run with an .834 winning percentage, which is fifth in NCAA history.
Now, he will take on a different role with the Supernovas, helping to build the roster and coaching staff. Cook said that after 30 years of coaching, he knew he was ready for the next chapter.
"I've spent my career helping grow the game at the college level, and now I have the chance to take that knowledge and apply it in a new way, with the world's leading professional volleyball franchise. The energy around our sport has never been higher, and the Supernovas are at the forefront of that momentum. There's no better place than Nebraska, and no better organization than the Supernovas, to help take this sport to the next level."
This is certainly an exciting move for the Supernovas, and it keeps Cook in the state of Nebraska. It will be interesting to see what type of impact he brings. Free agency for the Supernovas will open on Thursday, Aug. 7, at 4:00 p.m. CT.
