The dark childhood that shaped Oasis and their songs of freedom
H e says of his father, 'He beat the talent into me,' and he says it in such a hard, cold, and distanced manner, it is difficult not to be disturbed by his delivery. The words belong to Noel Gallagher and can be heard in the famous 2016 Oasis documentary, Supersonic. There are twin forces behind this quote: Ireland and Manchester. In Manchester, Oasis finish their five-gig run at Heaton Park on Sunday. One wonders: when they came on stage to rapturous applause from 80,000, did they glance southwards, towards nearby Burnage — place that raised them, shaped them, the place they made famous? In mid-August, they will turn to Ireland, playing two nights at Croke Park, Dublin, where again the past lies in wait. This time the past will be 160 miles away in Co Mayo, where summer memories were built and the roots of their family lie.
