It is said that Suraiya experienced love only once during her long film career. Their romance blossomed on set and they began spending a lot of time together. However, news of their closeness eventually reached Suraiya's family, leading to significant repercussions. Upon discovering their relationship, Suraiya's family became furious and placed her under house arrest. As a result, Suraiya was unable to meet or communicate with Dev Anand. Their different religious backgrounds fueled strong opposition to their relationship, particularly from her grandmother. Dev Anand later recounted his relationship with Suraiya in his autobiography, Romancing with Life . Suraiya and Dev Anand's Marriage Plan According to media reports, Dev Anand had planned to elope with Suraiya and marry her. However, when Suraiya's grandmother learned about their plan, Suraiya's family threatened to harm Dev Anand. As a result, Suraiya backed off, rejected his marriage proposal and kept her distance from him for the rest of her life. After their love story ended, Dev Anand moved on and married his Baazi co-star, Kalpana Karthik . Meanwhile, Suraiya buried the pain of her unfulfilled love in her heart and spent her entire life alone. Suraiya passed away on January 31, 2004 , at Harkishandas Hospital in Mumbai, at the age of 75, after being admitted for a week. She had been suffering from various ailments, including hypoglycemia, ischemia, and insulinoma.
