Uttarakhand BJP sends disciplinary notice to ex-MLA Suresh Rathore, seeks reply in 7 days

Representative image. HARIDWAR: Uttarakhand BJP on Monday sent a disciplinary notice to former party MLA from Jwalapar, Suresh Rathore, citing that 'his personal actions are harming the party's image. ' The BJP state leadership has now asked Rathore to provide an explanation within seven days. Rathore courted controversy when a woman from UP's Saharanpur, Urmila Sanawar, last year claimed that she was married to him. The situation turned ugly when Rathore accused her of blackmail, while she filed a counter case against him by making serious allegations of assault. She also posted several videos of him on social media. The matter took a twist when Rathore and Sanawar appeared together at a press conference in Saharanpur some days ago and he recognised Sanawar as his second wife, though he hasn't divorced his first wife. Meanwhile, the opposition Congress latched on to the issue and questioned why the state govt has not taken action against Rathore, given that he was openly flouting Uniform Civil Code (UCC) norms by indulging in polygamy. It is not the first time that Rathore has created a controversy. In 2021, a woman worker associated with BJP filed a rape case against him. Rathore also registered a blackmailing case against her, following which she was arrested. The matter is pending in court. Rathore told TOI, 'I will give my reply only on the party platform.'

Ex-BJP MLA's alleged second marriage sparks UCC row in Uttarakhand, party issues show-cause notice

DEHRADUN: Former BJP MLA from Jwalapur, Suresh Rathore, has publicly defied Uttarakhand's recently enacted Uniform Civil Code (UCC) by allegedly remarrying while his first wife is still alive, putting the ruling BJP in an embarrassing situation. The incident comes barely months after the Uniform Civil Code, implemented in the state on January 27 this year, explicitly prohibited bigamy or polygamy for individuals whose spouse is still living. Rathore's actions are seen as a direct challenge to the new legislation. What makes the situation particularly frustrating for the party is that the alleged marriage was not a clandestine affair; videos of the ceremony, held in Saharanpur, have widely circulated across the state. The BJP, initially facing a barrage of attacks from the Congress, has now taken cognisance of the matter. The party has issued a show-cause notice to Rathore, demanding a response within seven days. The controversy stems from a long-standing public dispute between the former legislator and actress Urmila Sanawar, which has played out extensively on social media and even involved legal cases. Rathore recently married Sanawar in Saharanpur, according to the viral videos, elevating her to the status of a second wife.

Uttarakhand BJP issues notice to ex-MLA amid allegations of marrying actor without divorcing wife

Days after former MLA and BJP leader Suresh Rathore publicly announced marrying his long-time partner, Urmila Sanawar, without divorcing his wife Ravindra Kaur, the BJP's Uttarakhand unit on Monday (June 23, 2025) issued a notice seeking his reply for the 'indiscipline'. Mr. Rathore's alleged 'second marriage' came at a time when the State adopted Uniform Civil Code (UCC) earlier this year which has strict rules for matrimonial relationships. BJP spokesperson Manvir Chauhan told The Hindu that the party had issued notice to Mr. Rathore after observing his undignified behaviour, especially through media and social media platforms. 'Your statements and conduct are damaging the party's social and moral image. Your activities clearly fall under the ambit of party indiscipline,' the notice issued by BJP's State general secretary Rajendra Bisht on June 23 reads. The notice had directed Mr. Rathore to submit a written explanation within seven days. According to informed sources, Mr. Rathore had already met party chief Mahendra Bhatt on Monday and submitted a written reply from his side. Mr. Chauhan refused to comment on the meeting but said the party would take a call on the notice after discussions with senior office-bearers. Accepting his marriage with Ms. Sanawar, an actor, Mr. Rathore, at a press conference earlier this month, had said it took him long to decide the right time to open up about the relationship that had seen huge controversies in the past. Mr. Rathore, who won from Jawalapur in 2017, lost election in 2022 to the Congress's Ravi Bahadur. Prior to entering politics, he used to run a cult named 'Ravidas Akhara'. Attacking the BJP leader and the ruling party, Congress spokesperson Garima Dasauni questioned the action taken by the government against him under the UCC law that banned polygamy and individuals in such marriages could face punishments such as a jail term of up to six months and a fine of up to ₹50,000.
