Uttarakhand BJP issues notice to ex-MLA amid allegations of marrying actor without divorcing wife

The Hindua day ago

Days after former MLA and BJP leader Suresh Rathore publicly announced marrying his long-time partner, Urmila Sanawar, without divorcing his wife Ravindra Kaur, the BJP's Uttarakhand unit on Monday (June 23, 2025) issued a notice seeking his reply for the 'indiscipline'.
Mr. Rathore's alleged 'second marriage' came at a time when the State adopted Uniform Civil Code (UCC) earlier this year which has strict rules for matrimonial relationships.
BJP spokesperson Manvir Chauhan told The Hindu that the party had issued notice to Mr. Rathore after observing his undignified behaviour, especially through media and social media platforms.
'Your statements and conduct are damaging the party's social and moral image. Your activities clearly fall under the ambit of party indiscipline,' the notice issued by BJP's State general secretary Rajendra Bisht on June 23 reads.
The notice had directed Mr. Rathore to submit a written explanation within seven days.
According to informed sources, Mr. Rathore had already met party chief Mahendra Bhatt on Monday and submitted a written reply from his side. Mr. Chauhan refused to comment on the meeting but said the party would take a call on the notice after discussions with senior office-bearers.
Accepting his marriage with Ms. Sanawar, an actor, Mr. Rathore, at a press conference earlier this month, had said it took him long to decide the right time to open up about the relationship that had seen huge controversies in the past.
Mr. Rathore, who won from Jawalapur in 2017, lost election in 2022 to the Congress's Ravi Bahadur. Prior to entering politics, he used to run a cult named 'Ravidas Akhara'.
Attacking the BJP leader and the ruling party, Congress spokesperson Garima Dasauni questioned the action taken by the government against him under the UCC law that banned polygamy and individuals in such marriages could face punishments such as a jail term of up to six months and a fine of up to ₹50,000.

‘Adding secular & socialist in Preamble blow to India's soul'

1 2 Lucknow: Calling the Emergency imposed by the Indira Gandhi-led Cong government in 1975 "a sin that can never be forgotten", chief minister Yogi Adityanath said that the inclusion of the words "secular" and "socialist" in the Preamble during that period was "an attack on India's soul". At a symposium to mark the 50th anniversary of the Emergency, observed as Samvidan Hatya Diwas by BJP across the country, the CM asked Cong to apologise to the entire nation, especially Dalits and the marginalised, as it had worked to suppress their voices during the two-year period. The CM also honoured 26 Loktantra Senanis, those who were jailed during the Emergency, and announced cashless treatment facilities for them and their family members. Some of them also recounted their experiences of the Emergency. Hitting out against Opposition parties, the CM pointed out that neither Samajwadi Party nor the RJD had made any statements or social media posts against the Emergency. Leaders from both parties were then against Cong's actions and had protested against its dictatorial measures. "However, today those same people seem to bow to Congress for their selfish interests. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trade Bitcoin & Ethereum – No Wallet Needed! This double standard is dangerous for democracy," he said. The CM added that family-centric parties like Congress, SP, and RJD had no right to invoke the Constitution as given a chance, they would strangle democracy. He recounted that preventing Ambedkar from reaching Parliament in 1952, the Emergency in 1975, the massacre of Sikhs in 1984, and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi tearing up a passed ordinance in 2013 were all undemocratic acts. Speaking about the sacrifices made by people from all sections of society to preserve democracy and the Constitution, the CM mentioned Ambedkar, who despite facing numerous insults, drafted the Constitution for the citizens of India while Congress wasted no time in strangling it. "On June 25, 1975, Congress held the rights of the legislature, executive, and judiciary hostage and censored the media. Even then, many people were dedicatedly working for democracy and India. Over a hundred thousand people fought for democracy and were arrested. The sin committed by Congress and then PM Indira Gandhi on June 25 to maintain their power can never be forgotten," he said, claiming that a single family had turned the dreams of great freedom fighters into a means to fulfil their narrow political interests.
