Terrifying shark attack is caught on camera as beast chomps giant bite out of surfer's board in horror near-miss

A SURFER has miraculously walked away unscathed after a terrifying shark attack at a beach in Australia. But the 13ft great white took a large bite out of his surfboard, laying bare just how lucky a near miss the man had. 6 A vast chuck was bitten out of his surfboard Credit: Facebook 6 He can be seen thrashing around in the water before disappearing underneath Credit: Facebook 6 The beast's jaws broke the board in half Credit: Facebook Brad Ross had been out surfing at Cabarita Beach in New South Wales on Monday morning when the beast pounced. A video shared on social media shows him in the water enjoying the early morning waves. But in a horrifying moment, he can be seen thrashing around in the water before disappearing underneath. He fortunately manages to resurface and get out of the sea a few seconds later. Brad was then filmed showing the jaw-dropping damage the shark inflicted to his surfboard. A vast chuck was bitten out of the board, showing how lucky he was to have avoided a shark bite himself. The beast's jaws also broke the board in half - and stunned onlookers watched on as Brad displayed the damage. Surf Live Saving NSW told the news website that the Far North Coast beach had been closed following the shocking incident. A spokesperson said: "Just after 8am this morning the Surf Life Saving NSW State Operations Centre was alerted to an incident at the unpatrolled Cabarita Beach which was called in through Triple 0. "The surfer is unharmed. Moment shark battles stingray as shocked beachgoers watch from shore "Australian Lifeguard Service lifeguards were tasked and immediately worked with Council to close the beach and put up signage to warn the public not to enter the water." Aerial assets have been deployed to survey the surrounding area. But Brad's lucky escape is not the only shark attack to have been reported in recent weeks. A 16-year-old boy received serious injuries when he was bitten by a shark in June on the very same beach. And in the Bahamas, an American tourist was mauled by a shark while spearfishing on Sunday. The 63-year-old sustained "severe injuries" in the attack, according to cops. He was was attacked by the beast at around 1pm near Big Grand Cay. A police statement reads: "Police on the island of Abaco responded to a shark attack that occurred shortly after 1pm on Sunday 17 August 2025, near Big Grand Cay. "Initial reports suggest that a 63-year-old resident of the USA was spearfishing when he was attacked by a shark, sustaining severe injuries. "He was taken to the local clinic for medical assistance before being airlifted to the United States for additional treatment." 6 The 13ft great white took a large bite out of his surfboard Credit: Facebook 6 A 16-year-old boy received serious injuries when he was bitten by a shark in June on the very same beach Credit: Getty

Surfer attacked by shark on Cabarita Beach, NSW

A surfer has miraculously walked away from a terrifying shark attack at a popular New South Wales beach, where a teenager was mauled weeks earlier. Brad Ross hit the waves on Monday at Cabarita Beach, south of the Queensland border, when a reported four-metre great white lunged at him just after 8am. Video captured by a local filming the ocean, and later shared to Facebook, showed Mr Ross suddenly thrashing in the water close to the shore, before he appeared to go. Seconds later the surfer emerged. In one photo of Mr Ross in the aftermath of the incident, he held up his surfboard, revealing the huge shark bite that had broken it in two. Other swimmers and surfers, including a child, were stunned at the sight. In a statement to Surf Live Saving NSW said the Far North Coast beach has been closed following the incident. 'Just after 8am this morning (Monday 18 August) the Surf Life Saving NSW State Operations Centre (SOC) was alerted to an incident at the unpatrolled Cabarita Beach which was called in through Triple 0,' a spokesman said. 'The surfer is unharmed. Australian Lifeguard Service lifeguards were tasked and immediately worked with Council to close the beach and put up signage to warn the public not to enter the water.' It deployed aerial assets to survey the scene. According to SharkSmart, a NSW government program that tracks tagged sharks and provides real time information, a five-metre great white was caught and released from a SMART drumline at Norries Headland – in Cabarita – just before 10am on Monday. Video and photos of Mr Ross' run-in have since gone viral online. 'Omg how did he not lose a leg?' one person wrote. 'Big bite, big shark. One lucky surfer,' another Facebook user added. 'Buy a lottery ticket,' a woman said. American surfing champion Kelly Slater also chimed in, saying it is 'incredible he's OK'. 'Great example of why I fear open ocean swimming so much. Surfboards have saved quite a few surfers with that tiny barrier,' he wrote on Instagram. Cabarita local Alex Kaczmarek said it was not uncommon to see sharks in the area around winter. 'It's fairly normal this time of year to have increased shark activity in this region; the humpback whales migrate north to birth their calves, the great whites (& other species) follow them & wait for their return trip. It's brutal, but, that's nature,' he wrote online. 'I mostly swim at patrolled beaches during this period for the above reasons. Poor little shark thought he was getting a tasty treat, ends up with a mouth full of fibreglass splinters lol.' It comes just weeks after a 16-year-old boy suffered serious injuries when he was bitten by a shark on the same beach while swimming with his brother. The boy was mauled late on a Sunday afternoon in June, leaving him with what paramedics described as 'traumatic' wounds to his right arm and leg. He was pulled to safety by other surfers, with shocking video taken from a headland showing a shark circling the group as they returned to shore. Bystanders, including an off-duty paramedic, provided first aid before an ambulance arrived to rush him to a Gold Coast hospital. The beach was also shut down after the attack at the time.

‘Beautiful boy': Tributes flow for Kaison Greaves after Easter Sunday tragedy

The family of Kaison Greaves have paid tribute to their 'strong-willed and incredibly funny' boy following his tragic death on Easter Sunday. Kaison, 9, died after falling and becoming trapped between rocks at the popular South West Rocks beach in the NSW mid north coast region. The boy was eventually freed after a large rescue effort, but he died at the scene. Kaison's father David said the family was heartbroken by the loss. 'He was an adventurer, strong-willed and incredibly funny, and always had a cheeky grin,' David said in a statement. A friend of the family has set up a fundraiser for the family, remembering Kaison, also known as Kai, as 'an extremely bright boy'. 'The Greaves family lost their beautiful boy Kai yesterday at South West Rocks in NSW while on holidays with his family,' the fundraiser states. 'He was an extremely bright boy who had a wonderful life with his devoted parents Brook and Dave. 'I am a close friend of the family trying to help in any way possible, the absolutely heartbreaking loss of a child is unimaginable. 'If we as a community / friends and family can do anything it's to support the family while they grieve their son and bring their boy home to Queensland from NSW.' Emergency services were called to the beach about 3.30pm on Sunday, after reports a young boy had fallen and was stuck between rocks. Mid North Coast Police District inspector Peter Walton, said an investigation into the incident was underway and a report would be prepared for the coroner. 'Indications are it is nothing but a tragic misadventure which has resulted in the loss of a young child and unimaginable grief for the family,' he said. 'I can only imagine what the family was going through watching it all unfold … it was a very difficult situation for all that were there. 'Indications are that he was just playing on the rocks, and probably a number of kids play on those rocks every day.' Surf Live Saving NSW has described the Easter long weekend tragedies as the 'worst' on record. The state recorded six fatalities in the water over the holiday period.
