Microsoft Surface Laptop 7 with 5G is here but only for these buyers and it costs a bomb

Microsoft has launched a new variant of its Surface Laptop 7, and this time, it comes with built-in 5G support. But there's a catch — this version, officially called the Microsoft Surface Laptop 5G, is aimed only at business customers for now. So, if you're a regular buyer looking to upgrade your laptop with mobile connectivity, you're out of luck — at least for now. The Surface Laptop 5G starts at a steep price of $1,799.99 in the US (roughly Rs 1,55,500), and it's part of Microsoft's growing Copilot+ PC line-up for enterprise users. That price gets you 16GB of RAM, 256GB SSD storage, and the promise of fast, always-on connectivity with a dedicated Copilot key for AI-powered Surface Laptop 5G is built around a 13.8-inch PixelSense Flow touchscreen with a sharp 2,304 x 1,536 resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. It supports Dolby Vision IQ, and for durability, the display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5. Under the hood, the laptop runs on Intel's Core Ultra 5 Series 2 processor, paired with Intel Arc graphics. There's also a dedicated AI Boost NPU (Neural Processing Unit), which Microsoft says can handle over 40 trillion operations per second (TOPS). That's the sort of muscle needed for tasks like real-time transcription, image processing and background blur during video calls — all done locally on the buyers can also opt for a higher-end variant with 32GB RAM, priced at $2,099.99 (roughly Rs 1,81,000). Microsoft says the laptop was designed from the ground up with 5G in mind, rather than just adding a modem as an afterthought. The Surface Laptop 5G features six strategically placed antennas that adapt to your surroundings to ensure strong and stable connections, whether you're indoors, on the move, or working remotely. It supports both Nano SIM and eSIM for global connectivity, and can also double up as a mobile hotspot. The machine weighs under 1.4kg, making it light enough to carry around without trouble. Battery life is rated for up to 20 hours of video playback or 12 hours of active web use, thanks to a 54Wh battery. Connectivity options are solid as well — Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, GPS, and of course, 5G. Port selection includes two USB 4.0 Type-C ports (with Thunderbolt 4), a USB Type-A port, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and Microsoft's proprietary Surface Connect expected for a business-focused machine, security is a big part of the offering. You get Windows Hello for face unlock, TPM 2.0 support, Microsoft Pluton security chip, BitLocker encryption, and even an optional smart card reader. The laptop runs on Windows 11 Pro, and since it's part of the Copilot+ PC range, there's a dedicated Copilot key to access AI tools Microsoft Surface Laptop 5G will be available in the US starting August 26 and comes in two colours — Black and Platinum. Regular users will have to wait and see if a consumer version becomes available later.- Ends

Surface Laptop 5G Brings Seamless Connectivity To The Enterprise

The Surface Laptop 5G reflects Microsoft's shift toward AI-ready, always-connected devices designed ... More to support real-world mobility and enterprise manageability. Microsoft is expanding its Copilot+ PC lineup with a new addition aimed at mobile professionals. The Surface Laptop 5G, a 13.8-inch business-focused device with built-in 5G and AI acceleration, will begin shipping to customers on August 26. It joins the updated Surface Pro and Surface Laptop, both of which are now available for purchase as of today. These updates reflect a broader shift in Microsoft's vision of how work gets done. Employees expect to work from anywhere, and organizations are increasingly investing in devices that support that flexibility. For Microsoft, the Surface Laptop 5G is about reducing friction for users and IT teams alike. Built for Mobility and Continuity Connectivity isn't a new feature, but integrating it effectively remains a challenge. Microsoft approached the Surface Laptop 5G as a clean-slate design. It includes a six-antenna system that adapts to how the device is held or used. That setup helps maintain a stable connection across changing environments, whether commuting, working from a client site, or joining a video call on the go. Unlike traditional laptops that rely solely on Wi-Fi, this device includes both NanoSIM and eSIM support, giving users flexibility in how they connect. When needed, it can also function as a mobile hotspot—helpful when no other connection is available. The Surface Laptop 5G weighs under three pounds and was tested with over 100 carriers in more than 50 countries. It's designed to maintain consistent performance across networks and geographies. Practical Design Choices Many laptops tuck antennas near the base, which can reduce signal quality when used on a desk or lap. Microsoft repositioned the antennas higher on the device and developed a new laminate material that allows radio signals to pass through without affecting durability or design. These changes aim to make the 5G experience more seamless without increasing the device's footprint. Microsoft also tested the laptop in real-world environments—including homes, offices, and travel settings—to evaluate how connectivity performs in common use cases. This kind of testing helps ensure the device can support everyday workflows without interruption. AI On-Device, Not Just in the Cloud The Surface Laptop 5G features Intel Core Ultra processors and a built-in Neural Processing Unit capable of more than 40 trillion operations per second. This hardware enables AI-powered tasks like transcription, noise reduction, and summarization to run locally—reducing latency and maintaining productivity even in low-bandwidth situations. For organizations using Microsoft 365 Copilot, this means employees can take advantage of AI tools without relying solely on cloud connectivity. The local processing also adds a layer of privacy, since some tasks can be handled directly on the device. IT Considerations and Security From an IT perspective, the Surface Laptop 5G fits into Microsoft's broader management ecosystem. It works with Windows Autopilot and Microsoft Intune, supporting zero-touch provisioning and remote configuration of eSIM profiles. This allows devices to be shipped directly to users, fully set up and ready to go. Admins can monitor compliance and health through the Surface Management Portal in Intune. With Security Copilot now integrated, the platform provides AI-driven insights to help detect and respond to threats more quickly. For teams working in public or shared spaces, Microsoft also offers a PanzerGlass privacy screen—sold separately—to help reduce the risk of visual data exposure. A Timely Refresh With support for Windows 10 ending in October 2025, many organizations are reassessing their device strategies. Microsoft's updated Surface lineup offers businesses a path toward more modern hardware that supports AI, mobility, and security requirements out of the box. The Surface Laptop 5G isn't aimed at power users looking for maximum specs. Instead, it targets a different segment—workers who move between locations, rely on cloud tools, and need dependable connectivity without extra steps. The 13.8-inch Surface Laptop 5G will begin shipping on August 26. The 13-inch Surface Laptop and 12-inch Surface Pro for business customers are available starting July 22. For those looking to refresh aging fleets or support more flexible work models, these devices offer another option to consider—built with mobility in mind.
