UP man arrested for cousin's rape-murder after rakhi ritual
Kanpur: A 33-year-old man was arrested in Uttar Pradesh's Auraiya on Tuesday for allegedly assaulting and killing his 14-year-old cousin, hours after she tied a rakhi on him. The accused, Surjeet, had visited his uncle's home on Rakshabandhan. Police said that later that night, he allegedly attacked the girl and tried to pass it off as a suicide. Her father, asleep in another room, discovered her body the next morning and informed police. Bloodstains in the house raised suspicion, and investigators noted Surjeet's attempts to dissuade relatives from speaking. He was detained and, during questioning, confessed to the crime, Auraiya SP Abhijeet Shankar said. An autopsy confirmed sexual assault. Samples collected from the victim and the suspect have been sent for forensic analysis at a Jhansi lab. Police said further action will follow after receiving the reports.

Police said later that night, after drinking heavily, he raped and murdered her and staged the scene to look like a suicide by hanging her body The girl's father, who was sleeping in another room, found his daughter's body the next day and informed the police. Police concluded it was not a suicide after finding bloodstains in the house. They questioned family members and noticed Surjeet's constant presence. During questioning, he often spoke for other family members. The following day, as police continued their investigation, Surjeet attempted to mislead them. His behaviour raised suspicion as he hindered family members from answering questions. Surjeet was detained and confessed to the crime during interrogation. Auraiya SP Abhijeet Shankar said rape was confirmed in the postmortem report. "Additionally, hair was found in the teenager's nails and hand. Samples from the suspect's hair have been collected for comparison and sent to the forensic science lab in Jhansi. A DNA test will also be conducted," the SP added. Surjeet then killed her and hung the body from a noose to make it look like a suicide. How police got suspicious about Surjeet The next day, he went back to the house when the police were carrying out their investigation to misguide them, but made them suspicious instead when spoke for the family members rather than letting them answer the questions. At the time of the crime, the girl's father was reportedly sleeping in another room in the house and did not hear anything. He discovered the teenager's body the next day and informed the police, the report mentioned. Officials said they could saw blood stains at several spots in the house and could make out that it the girl did not die by suicide. The officials began questioning the family members and noticed that Surjeet was always with them, the report said, dding that when the girl's kin were inquired, the accused would answer for them. Auraiya Superintendent of Police Abhijeet Shankar said victim's body was sent for post-mortem, which confirmed rape. Surjeet was taken into custody and confessed to the crime during questioning, according to the report.

The disturbing news was reported from Uttar Pradesh's Auraiya. As per the police, after killing the girl, he hung her body from a noose to make it look like suicide. As per a report by NDTV, after celebrating Rakshabandhan on Saturday, 33-year-old Surjeet went back to his home upon consuming a lot of alcohol. He raped the girl while she was asleep and then killed her. As per the police, the girl's father was asleep in the next room but couldn't hear anything. The girl's body was found hanging the next day. After the gruesome killing, Surjeet started misleading the investigation. Police got suspicious when he did not let any other family member answer the questions. As the police reached the murder spot, they were sure it was not a suicide case because there were bloodstains in several places. Her body was sent for a post-mortem, which confirmed rape. NDTV further reported that Surjeet was held and he confessed to the crime during interrogation. PTI report, the police have arrested the 29-year-old relative, the husband of the class 10 student's paternal aunt, under various sections of the BNS and POCSO Act. The police further said, the accused was remanded to judicial custody after a local court rejected his bail application. Police also detained four other accused who also video recorded the rape. As per the girl's complaint, the relative visited their residence on Raksha Bandhan on August 9, and took her to a deserted place where she was gang-raped.
