Top guns set for Asian Championship with Worlds in mind
CHENNAI: Indian shooters will be the centre of attention in the coming days. With the Asian Shooting Championship (ASC) in Kazakhstan knocking on the door, the country's elite shooters will be hoping to maintain their good season so far. More importantly, the event could act as a springboard ahead of the World Championships, which is scheduled to be held in Cairo in November. Currently fine-tuning their skills at the Dr Karni Shooting range in New Delhi, as many as 182 shooters from the country across rifle/pistol and shotgun categories (both Olympic and Non-Olympic events) are set to feature during the continental event. The Indians, who finished third during their most-recent assignment — the Munich World Cup in June — will be testing their skills against the cream of the sport in the continent. World Record holder Wang Zifei from China, who has had a season to remember so far, will be one of the top contenders. Suruchi Singh, Saurabh Chaudhary, Manu Bhaker, Mehuli Ghosh, Sift Kaur Samra, Chain Singh are some of the top guns from the country who'll be part of the competition which is scheduled to be held from August 16 to 30. "This is an important competition for us. We are looking forward to this. Things are looking good at the moment and this event will also act as a good preparation for the World Championships," Deepali Deshpande, national rifle head coach, assessed. The shooters have been part of the preparatory camp in the national capital since the start of August. The shooters had mostly done the hard work last month. The Delhi camp was predominantly about polishing their skills. "We had a productive camp last month in Dehradun. The range is new there and the weather was also much better as compared to Delhi. The shooters got a good opportunity to train. There was no pressure as there was no competition nearby. We focussed on all fronts including sports science and also worked on technical training. It was a step-by-step process," Deepali, who is in charge of the shooters from the rifle category, said. Reigning champion Akhil Sheoran, who will compete in the men's 50m rifle 3 positions, will be hoping to defend his crown while Sift will be aiming for the same, having captured silver in the last edition. The shooters will be leaving for the event in batches.

Indian contingent shines bright in Munich, returns home with two gold and two bronze
New Delhi [India] June 17 (ANI): The Indian pistol and rifle shooters showcased exceptional performances at the recently concluded ISSF World Cup 2025 in Munich, securing four medals, including two gold and two bronze, according to a release from SLI. This stellar achievement propelled India to an impressive third-place finish in the overall points table, trailing only the People's Republic of China and Norway. India's medal quest began with two-time Olympian Elavenil Valarivan, who clinched a bronze in the women's 10m air rifle category. The 25-year-old demonstrated remarkable skill, registering a score of 231.2 in the final. Earlier in the qualification round, Valarivan set a new national record with an outstanding score of 635.9. Adding to India's bronze medal tally was Sift Kaur Samra in the women's 50m rifle 3 positions event. The 23-year-old, who holds the current world record in this discipline (recorded during the 2022 Asian Games with a score of 469.6), secured her podium finish with a final score of 453.1. This win follows her gold medal triumph in the same category at the 2025 ISSF World Cup Buenos Aires earlier this year. The first gold medal for India at the tournament was secured by the young prodigy Suruchi Singh in the women's 10m air pistol event. The 19-year-old displayed nerves of steel, recording a total score of 241.9 in the final to claim the top spot on the podium. This marks Suruchi's third consecutive gold medal at an ISSF World Cup this year, having previously won gold in both the Buenos Aires and Lima legs of the tournament, cementing her dominance. 'It feels surreal to win my third consecutive ISSF World Cup gold,' said Suruchi Singh. 'The competition here in Munich was intense, but I focused on my technique and stayed calm. I am incredibly grateful for the support from my coaches and the entire team. I am looking forward to winning more such medals and making my country and countrymen proud,' she added. India's gold medal count was further boosted by the formidable duo of Arjun Singh Babuta and Arya Borse in the 10m air rifle mixed team event. They delivered a commanding performance in the final, defeating China's duo of Wang Zifei and Sheng Lihao with a decisive score of 17-7. Earlier, the Indian pair showcased their prowess by scoring 635.2 in the qualification round, against the Chinese team's 635.9, which is also the new qualification world record. President of the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI), Kalikesh Narayan Singh Deo, expressed pride in the exceptional achievements of the Indian athletes and extended his best wishes, while also promising them further support from NRAI. 'We are incredibly proud of our shooters' remarkable achievements at the ISSF World Cup in Munich. Their dedication, hard work, and consistent performances continue to bring laurels to the nation. We remain committed to supporting our athletes as they strive for even greater heights,' Singh said. Expressing his excitement to watch the athletes in the first-ever Shooting League of India, he added, 'With our shooters making the nation proud around the world, we are even more excited to watch them in action when the inaugural edition of the Shooting League of India kicks off later this year, as they will get the chance to perform on their home soil, along with many global stars.' A 36-member Indian contingent took part in the third ISSF World Cup of the year in Munich. India had previously won eight medals--four gold, two silver, and two bronze--in the Buenos Aires edition and seven medals--two gold, four silver, and a bronze--in the Lima leg. The next leg of the 2025 ISSF World Cup will take place in Ningbo, China, in September. (ANI)

ISSF World Cup wrap: Strong finish helps India double Munich haul from last year
A string of consistent final appearances and two gold medals powered India to a commendable third-place finish at the recently-concluded World Cup in Munich, one of the most prestigious and challenging tournaments on the ISSF's annual calendar. The tournament saw India register its third top-three finish this year in four World Cups, with two gold and as many bronze medals. The team not only improved its standing from joint third last year but also doubled its medal count, including the number of gold. 'The Munich World Cup, which is an annual feature of the International Shooting calendar and is held at the revered Olympic Shooting range, which hosted the sport at the 1972 Munich Olympics, has once again brought out the best in our rifle and pistol shooters,' said K. Sultan Singh, secretary general, National Rifle Association of India (NRAI). He added, 'When many were saying, and quite rightly so, that India will find it very tough given the large field, quality of competition and the fact that some of our best were not part of the squad, our athletes have proven that the depth in Indian shooting is more formidable than ever before. 'On behalf of the NRAI, I congratulate the entire squad, including the coaches and support staff, for the amazing results, not only in Munich but throughout the year.' The high point for India at Munich this year, as also of this whole international season, has been the stunning consistency of rising women's pistol star Suruchi Singh. The Haryana teenager won an unprecedented third consecutive individual ISSF World Cup stage gold in the women's 10m air pistol, two months after a memorable debut in Buenos Aires. The other highlight was Arya Borse and Olympian Arjun Babuta's win over the Chinese world record holders Sheng Lihao and Wang Zifei, the former also the Olympic champion in the event, in the 10m air rifle mixed team final, where they outgunned their opponents 17-7. Elavenil Valarivan (women's 10m air rifle), a two-time Olympian, and Sift Kaur Samra (50m rifle 3 positions women), Olympian and world record holder, also reinforced their status as world-class shooters with their bronze-winning performances in Munich. Elavenil also set a new qualification national record of 635.9 en route to her bronze, while Suruchi equalled Manu Bhaker's qualifications national mark of 588 in the women's air pistol. In keeping with the trend this year, Indian World Cup debutants also delivered encouraging performances in strong fields. Ananya Naidu shot a solid 632.4 to finish 13th in women's 10m air rifle, while Nishant Rawat (10m air pistol men) and Aditya Malra (air pistol men) shot scores of 582 and 578 to finish 10th and 27th respectively. India made a total of seven finals in the 10 events in Munich, with Bhaker (women's 25m pistol), Varun Tomar (men's 10m air pistol) and Chain Singh (men's 3P) making the cut. China finished on top of the standings with seven medals, including four gold, while Norway edged India to second on the basis of having won a silver with the same number of golds and medals as India. A total of 11 nations, including the individual neutral athletes group won medals in Munich. The ISSF bandwagon will move to Lonato Del Garda in Italy next month for the year's fourth Shotgun World Cup stage, while the fourth and final rifle/pistol World Cup is scheduled for Ningbo in China in September.
