'He is the show': backlash after Aussie Survivor host's torch extinguished

Fans have reacted to the "blindside" sacking of the much-loved Australian Survivor host Jonathan LaPaglia. Thousands have signed a petition calling to keep the longtime host and left comments regarding the "boneheaded decision" as former players shared shock. Network 10 confirmed La Paglia's exit on social media, stating the upcoming season of Survivor: Australia v The World would be his last on June 30. "JLP has brought a unique blend of authority, intelligence and empathy to his role as host of Australian Survivor over the last 10 years," the post read. "Acting as a referee and managing the intense pressure of the game while also acknowledging the human drama unfolding, JLP has been a compelling and memorable figure in the world of Survivor." The TV network said they "wish him continued success in his acting and presenting career". La Paglia said he had seen epic blindsides across his time hosting, but his firing "might just be the craziest of them all". In an Instagram post, he said he received a call from Network 10 thanking him for his hard work and dedication, but said he was told the next season is "going in a different direction". "Ratings had dipped a bit recently and they wanted to do something drastic to shake things up," he said. "I have loved and will dearly miss the immensely talented crew, all the crafty players and our loyal sassy audience." "It has been one of the greatest adventures of my career to helm Australian Survivor, so it is without a doubt the hardest challenge of all to snuff my own torch, but here goes; ' tribe has spoken'." A petition launched on when rumours of his sacking emerged has collected more than 2700 signatures and a flood of messages supporting him. Petition creator Chloe D said the then rumoured decision would "lead to a loss of viewer loyalty and a dip in ratings". The move was also met with shock and sadness by former winners, players and TV personalities. "Talk about brutal!" said the winner 10's first season, Kristie Bennet. "We have all been completely robbed. You made this show with the players from the ground up." 2023 winner Feras Basal asked Network 10: "Can I play an immunity idol for him?". Former My Kitchen Rules judge and I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here contestant chef Colin Fassnidge said LaPaglia "is the show". A theme across many comments from former players was how well LaPaglia treated the players. Player Sam Webb said LaPaglia bought more than his presence, "it was respect and an understanding of what this game does to people". "You elevated the entire experience for players and viewers and I can confidently say that on behalf of everyone who's played," Webb said. Lapaglia said in his post, "I'm a huge fan of this incredible game, always have been, always will be". Australian Survivor 2025 champion wins $500,000 in nail-biting finale: 'So happy'

After 47 days of strategic gameplay, brutal blindsides and gruelling challenges, the winner of Australian Survivor: Brains V Brawn II was decided in Monday night's grand finale. AJ Antonios, Kaelan Lockhart and Myles Kuah, who were each originally on the 'Brain' tribe, went head to head following Zara Callianiotis' elimination at the final four. Each of the remaining contestants had played a dominant game, with some fans calling it the "best final three" they've ever seen. They'd been part of an alliance called the 'Post-Graduates' since the beginning of the season and managed to take out their opponents to make it to the end. The episode began with Kaelan winning the final immunity challenge and taking Myles to the final tribal council, leaving AJ devastated. The duo then delivered their compelling speeches to the jury about why they should each win the game, with a majority of the eliminated contestants voting for Myles. Myles received seven votes out of a possible eight and won the title of Sole Survivor alongside the $500,000 prize money. One of the best AU players ever!!! #SurvivorAU — Cisnice (@cisnice123) April 14, 2025 While the Australian Survivor finale was filmed last year, the winner typically only learns about the result when watching the episode on TV. Australian Survivor: Heroes V Villains champion Liz Parnov revealed to Yahoo Lifestyle following her win in 2023 that the reality show had filmed multiple different results. 'We filmed alternate endings for everyone, so I only actually found out that I'd won yesterday,' she explained. 'So it's all very, very fresh.' When asked about how they filmed alternate finales, Liz said the show's host Jonathan LaPaglia read 'fake votes' from the voting urn. 'They can bring in fake votes and read them out, and then they don't show the real votes,' she detailed. 'It's wild.' Channel 10 announced on Sunday that Survivor fans won't have to wait another year for another season to air on TV, thanks to Survivor: Australia v The World. The all-star series will see the best of the best Aussie contestants going up against players from the US, South Africa, Finland and New Zealand franchises. The season was filmed in Samoa last year over just 16 days, making it a much shorter series than fans are used to, as the Australian version typically films for 47 days and the American edition takes place over 26. Despite its short length, a production insider tells Yahoo Lifestyle that it was the 'most thrilling season' that has ever been filmed.
