‘My optometrist asked if I could bring it in!': Kitty Flanagan on her Logies win
Kitty Flanagan and the team behind her ABC comedy Fisk were the big winners at last week's TV Week Logie Awards, scooping five awards: best scripted comedy program; best lead actress in a comedy for Flanagan; best lead actor in a comedy for Aaron Chen; best supporting actress for Julia Zemiro; and best supporting actor for Glenn Butcher. Flanagan spoke to TV editor Louise Rugendyke about her big night out and the plans for season four. Good morning Kitty! Have you recovered yet? It's a very long day, and it's a long night, but what a wonderful result. I'm probably still try to get back to everyone who texted me congratulations. Apologies if I haven't got back to you, I'm working my way through the list, everyone has been so lovely. What time did the day start for you? We have a rehearsal on Saturday, and then you go and have your hair and make-up done from 11am on Sunday, and then you don't get home until quite a lot later! It's the first time I've ever borrowed jewellery – I felt very Hollywood – even if Sam Pang did say I looked like I was wearing a Survivor Immunity necklace. How does it feel to be recognised this way? I remember when I spoke to you ahead of season two of Fisk, you said you had to write a best-selling book [2019's 488 Rules for Life: The Thankless Art of Being Correct ] to be considered capable enough for your own show, so this must be so satisfying. It is really satisfying, but also I think as the seasons have gone on, and we're now up to season three, I feel like it's probably the right time. I don't think if I'd been given my own show before this I would have been able to do it. I've met all the right people by this stage, I'd done enough work to have the right experience, so in a way it was perfect timing. I waited until everything was ready and it's worked out really well! Did you see Aaron Chen's thank you speech on Instagram? He said he couldn't be at the Logies because of the injuries he'd sustained on set during season three of Fisk … Well, I have some inside information on Aaron Chen for you. He was contacted multiple times, 'Where's your speech for Guy [Montgomery] just in case you win?' No reply! However, once he was texted [Chen is living in New York] 'Where would you like your Logie sent?' the reply came back immediately! So make of that what you will. I love that you said on stage that Fisk is a show that families watch together. What do you think 10-year-old Kitty would have thought of Fisk? I think that's what makes it so special for us [Flanagan and her sister Penny, who is a co-creator of Fisk ]. We watched so much TV – because we are of that generation where there was only one TV in the house – and you pretty much had to watch what your parents chose. That's why we grew up watching things like M*A*S*H, where we probably didn't realise what we were laughing at, you just laughed along because your parents were. It's really special to Penny and I because people don't do that any more [watch TV together], but we've been told by quite a few people that they do watch Fisk as a family, and I think that's extraordinary given how times have changed and how viewing habits have changed. I have a friend who watches it with her teenage daughter, and they laugh together while watching it, which is so rare with teenagers. I'm such an anti-glamour person, [and] with all the social media images [teenagers] are presented with, it's nice that they're also seeing a lady in a big baggy suit. What do you think Helen Tudor-Fisk herself would make of all the attention? She does not like fuss. I think she'd probably be as awkward as I am! It is a once-in-a-lifetime thing, to win five Logies like that, so I just have to remember that and enjoy it, and thank everyone for watching and voting. It's been so special and so lovely to get this [recognition] at this stage in my career and my life. OK, so Fisk won five Logies last week, in 2021 it also won best comedy series at Series Mania in France, and you also have a few AACTA awards up your sleeve, including for best narrative comedy series and best acting in a comedy. Where are you keeping all your trophies? I need to do what most Oscar winners do and keep them in the toilet, that's where most people will see them. They're just in my office, where no one can see them, but maybe I need to put them around the house as door stoppers. You want to make sure someone sees it because people do get quite excited when they see a Logie. People always ask me to bring it. My optometrist asked if I could bring it in, and I said, 'Sure!' I think I might be like [Gold Logie winner] Lynne McGranger and carry it around in my handbag. Didn't Lynne also say she wanted her ashes put in her Gold Logie? Loading It got a bit weird then [laughing]. She lost me there. I was on board when she said she would carry it around in her handbag, but when she said she'd cut [the Logie's] head off and pour her ashes in it, I thought, 'This is getting a bit gruesome Lynne.' I walk past a house in my neighbourhood and I can see two Silver Logies on their mantelpiece through the front window. I'm dying to know who it is. Ohhh, I wonder who it is? You'll have to wait outside in the bushes. What can you tell me about season four of Fisk? Is it coming? It's just a matter of everyone finding the time. It's an incredible group, and it doesn't really work without the whole group. And with Chenny flying the coop to New York, it's just a matter of getting everyone together. Penny is working on other things at the moment, but there is so much love for it out there. I interviewed Julia Zemiro a few years ago and she said she'd love for you two to do a travel show together. Please make that happen! I think that was just us drinking champagne together in France. It's not a pitch yet, but we'll try and make it happen. And when will you and Anne Edmonds overthrow Sam Pang as hosts of the Logies? Look, as soon as he does a bad job. He's nailing it at the moment, and who wants to come in after that? We'll wait until he absolutely tanks. Last question, Kitty, is there anyone you forgot to thank that you'd like to thank now? Yes! The Logies is all about the 'faces' of television, which is great and fun, and I'm lucky to be considered a face. But there are so many 'faceless' people in our industry who do all the heavy lifting so that us faces can take the glory. So I want to thank them and in particular all the writers without whom none of us would have a job!
