Survé Philanthropies and Soong Ching Ling Foundation Inspire 500 Girls at Phoenix High School for Women's Day

Celebrating Women's Day, Survé Philanthropies and the Soong Ching Ling Foundation inspired 520 girls at Phoenix High School, providing them with essential tools and gifts to navigate life's challenges. Image: Independent Newspapers In a powerful celebration of Women's Day, Survé Philanthropies, in partnership with the Soong Ching Ling Foundation, visited Phoenix High School in Manenberg on Monday, delivering a message of empowerment, hope, and opportunity to 520 female students. The initiative, rooted in the belief that education and inspiration can transform lives, aimed to equip the young women with not only essential items but also the tools to navigate life's challenges with confidence and determination. Addressing the packed school hall, South African free-diving champion and founder of I AM WATER Foundation, Hanli Prinsloo shared her journey with the learners. She spoke candidly about the challenges she overcame and encouraged the girls to hold onto their dreams, remain focused, and believe in their ability to shape their futures. Each learner received a gift pack filled with practical goodies they need for school and personal care – an act that drew smiles, laughter, and heartfelt thanks from the students. In a touching gesture, the female teachers of Phoenix High were also honoured with special gifts in recognition of their dedication to shaping the next generation. The day's programme was more than a gift-giving exercise; it was an exchange of values and visions. In a community where socio-economic challenges often overshadow opportunity, the event served as a reminder that there are people and organisations committed to investing in the future of young women. For many of the learners, this was the first time they had attended such a large-scale Women's Day programme, and the excitement was palpable. Survé Philanthropies has long championed initiatives that advance education, empowerment, and equality, particularly among disadvantaged communities. Today's event was another step in its ongoing mission to create a more inclusive and opportunity-rich future for South Africa's youth. Guided by the legacy of Soong Ching Ling, a beloved figure known for her deep commitment to humanity, the SA Soong Ching Ling Foundation works to uplift vulnerable women and children, often through heartfelt donations to schools, orphanages, and community shelters. Through the I AM WATER Foundation, Hanli creates transformative experiences for underserved youth – inviting them to explore, respect, and fall in love with the ocean. She reminds us that protecting our planet begins with feeling deeply connected to it and continues to inspire a generation of ocean guardians, one deep breath at a time. As the learners filed out of the hall, chatting and comparing their gifts, the energy was unmistakable – a mix of gratitude, inspiration, and possibility. In the heart of Manenberg, for at least one day, the focus was not on the challenges, but on the promise of what these young women can achieve.

Mandela Day: Survé Philanthropies rally to help Simon's Town shelter

Daniel Young | Published 4 hours ago In the heart of Simon's Town, the Happy Valley Home serves as a vital refuge for many homeless individuals in need. During the cold and wet Cape winters, this shelter not only provides a warm place to sleep but also serves as the only source of a warm meal for those who have fallen on hard times. The spirit of community giving was especially evident as South Africans celebrated Nelson Mandela International Day on Friday, an annual event commemorating the legacy of the anti-apartheid icon. This initiative encourages individuals to dedicate 67 minutes of their time to service in honour of Mandela's 67 years of activism for social justice. As part of this celebration, Survé Philanthropies stepped up to support Happy Valley Home with a generous donation of food items, enhancing the care provided to both the team and residents. Currently, the home supports 63 residents, spanning from 18-year-olds to the elderly. Each resident has their own unique story, woven together by a shared aspiration: the desire to transform their lives for the better. Happy Valley Home is dedicated to making this transformation possible. In addition to providing shelter, the home offers access to skills development and mental health rehabilitation initiatives, which the staff take great pride in. Patrick Msakayeya, the manager of Happy Valley Home, provided an overview of the facility's operations. 'We have registered 63 clients, 53 are male and 10 are female, although the number changes daily,' he shared with pride. During the winter months, Happy Valley Home frequently welcomes individuals over the age of 60, striving to bring as many people off the streets as possible. 'We do make exceptions where we take in 65- and 75-year-olds because we want to help as many people as we can, especially during these colder months,' Msakayeya explained. Looking to the future, Msakayeya emphasised the various ways people can contribute to the shelter's mission. 'We accept all kinds of donations. Our clothing is delivered directly to our clients, and we also have a clothing store located nearby. In terms of food, we would greatly appreciate non-perishable items that can be stored and used long-term.' As the sun sets on another Madiba Day, the work at Happy Valley Home continues, serving as a quiet reminder that even small acts of kindness can lead to lasting change. In the spirit of Mandela's legacy, the community's support, organisations like Survé Philanthropies, and the dedicated efforts of its staff ensure that Happy Valley Home remains a beacon of hope for those seeking a second chance at life. The mission of Survé Philanthropies is to support and positively impact disadvantaged and marginalised communities through initiatives which enable the transformation of South Africa and Africa's social and economic landscapes.

Parkwood Unites for the Children: A Muharram Celebration of Giving and Community

The Parkwood community came together to honour Muharram, bringing joy and hope to over 2,000 children in need, fostering unity and compassion in a time of celebration. Image: Supplied In a heartwarming display of unity and compassion, the Parkwood community came together on Saturday, 5 July, to honour the sacred month of Muharram by giving back to the children who form the heartbeat of this resilient neighbourhood. Held at the Sabr Mosque, this annual initiative reached over 2,000 children from the local area—welcoming all, regardless of religion or background. The mosque was transformed into a space of joy and generosity, as children gathered inside to receive food, treats, and a warm sense of belonging. At the centre of the event was Buckets of Joy, a long-standing community project run by the mosque's volunteers. Despite operating with limited resources year after year, the team has remained enduring in their commitment to serve Parkwood's children with dignity and care. This year, their efforts received a welcome boost from Survé Philanthropies, which contributed funds to help expand the programme's reach. 'We're incredibly grateful for the support we received,' said a volunteer from Buckets of Joy. 'Every year, we do this for the kids, and having a partner like Survé Philanthropies come on board shows that others believe in the value of our work too.' Video Player is loading. Children were first invited into the mosque, where they engaged with organisers and volunteers who offered encouragement and friendly smiles. After short interactions, each child was given a small monetary gift along with a colourful party packet filled with treats. They then proceeded to collect hearty servings of Akni, a traditional spiced rice dish deeply loved in Cape communities. The joy was unmistakable. Laughter rang out through the streets as children left with their parcels in hand, sharing their excitement with one another. For many families in Parkwood, where financial challenges are a daily reality, this initiative provided not just nourishment but a reminder that their community has not forgotten them. Survé Philanthropies, known for its commitment to social development, education, and community upliftment, said the decision to support the Parkwood Muharram initiative was an easy one. 'We believe in supporting grassroots projects that are driven by compassion and community spirit,' said a spokesperson for Survé Philanthropies. 'Buckets of Joy is one such project, it reaches people where they are, and it reminds children that they matter.' The initiative also carried a message of inclusion and togetherness. Children from all religions were welcomed and treated equally, reflecting the broader values of humanity, charity, and respect that underpin the significance of Muharram.
