How to join the FBI: Physical tests, background checks, and academy training explained
How to join the FBI? For many students, especially US citizens studying abroad or in American universities, the idea of joining the FBI feels straight out of a crime thriller. But for those with discipline, integrity, and a passion for justice, becoming a Special Agent is an achievable and highly respected career. This guide walks you through the real process, focusing on three key areas that define the FBI's selection journey: physical fitness, background screening, and academy training. Who can apply? To join the FBI as a Special Agent, candidates must be US citizens and between 23 to 36 years old at the time of appointment. A bachelor's degree is mandatory, though your major can vary. While subjects like criminal justice, cybersecurity, law, accounting, or languages are particularly useful, any accredited degree is acceptable. Applicants must also have a valid driver's license and at least two years of full-time work experience. If you've completed a postgraduate degree, one year may suffice. Students in India or other countries who hold US citizenship are eligible, but should be ready to return for in-person testing and interviews. How fit do you need to be? The FBI's Physical Fitness Test (PFT) is one of the first hurdles in the selection process, and it's taken seriously. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Susan Boyle Is Now so Thin and Looks Beautiful! Undo Candidates must complete sit-ups in one minute, perform a 300-meter sprint, do as many push-ups as possible (without a time limit), and complete a 1.5-mile run. Each activity is scored individually, and you must pass in all categories. Many students underestimate the physical component, focusing only on academics. But fitness is essential in FBI fieldwork, and the agency expects candidates to train well in advance. You'll be tested again just before reporting to the FBI Academy, so maintaining endurance and strength throughout the process is key. Background checks Perhaps the most intense part of the process is the background investigation. The FBI looks far beyond your résumé. They examine your criminal history (no felonies are allowed), your financial conduct, including student loans, and even your personal habits, friendships, and online behavior. A polygraph test is part of this stage, along with detailed interviews involving your family, professors, or past employers. The bureau is extremely strict about honesty. Any attempt to withhold information or mislead investigators can lead to disqualification. Students who plan to apply should pay close attention to maintaining a clean record, staying financially responsible, and avoiding any violation of federal laws or FBI drug policy. Mental and medical evaluations Once you've cleared the initial assessments, you'll face comprehensive medical and psychological testing. The FBI needs agents who are mentally focused and physically capable of handling high-stress environments. These evaluations ensure that you're fit for duty and resilient enough to work on complex investigations or under intense pressure. Mental health support is part of the FBI's structure, but the entry point requires a clean bill of psychological and physical readiness. What to expect at the FBI Academy Candidates who make it through are sent to the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia, for 20 weeks of rigorous training. This residential program combines law, ethics, forensic science, investigative techniques, firearms handling, and tactical physical training. It's the final phase before you're officially sworn in as a Special Agent. Training is not just academic, it prepares you for field conditions. You'll run simulations of arrests and interrogations, write detailed reports, learn to use technology for investigations, and build the physical and emotional stamina needed in real FBI operations. Can students start early? Yes. Students can start preparing during their college years. The FBI Honors Internship Program is one of the best entry points for US citizens currently enrolled in college. It offers real-world experience and mentorship. Choosing majors that align with the FBI's priorities—like cybersecurity, law, psychology, or data science, can also improve your chances. Leadership experience, volunteering, language skills, and staying physically fit during your student years will all help you stand out when you apply. Final thoughts The FBI isn't just looking for muscle or brains, it wants individuals with integrity, judgment, and a commitment to justice. If you're a student who dreams of making a difference at the national level and you're willing to work hard for it, this path could be yours. Joining the FBI is not easy, but for the right candidate, it's one of the most meaningful careers available in public service. TOI Education is on WhatsApp now. Follow us here . Thousands prepare to Party at the Palace in West Lothian this weekend
Ticket prices have been frozen at the same price they were 10 years ago Thousands of revellers are set to descend on Linlithgow this weekend for the annual Party at the Palace festival. While the cost-of-living has had a detrimental effect on almost everything, incredibly, festival organisers have managed to keep ticket prices the same as they were a decade ago for the two-day event. Among the family-friendly festival's biggest fans is West Lothian singer Susan Boyle, the surprise global sensation who shot to fame after her performances on Britain's Got Talent in 2009 will be joining the crowds this weekend. SuBo is a massive supporter of the festival and even has a framed Party at the Palace sheep poster on her wall at home, and is coming along to join in the fun as usual on Saturday and Sunday, August 2 and 3. She's even hinted to organisers that she would love to play the festival herself in the coming years. The acts this year include Boney M, Squeeze, Tom Meighan, Boyzlife, Carol Decker, Generation GBX, Kevin McGuire, and much more. There's also the famed comedy tent and strong food and drink offerings. Susan said: 'I'm really looking forward to going to Party at The Palace again this year. I've been just about every year since it started. 'There's always a really friendly and relaxed atmosphere – and it's right on my doorstep too. 'They've never asked me to sing at it yet… maybe they will one day.' While Susan won't be singing on stage next weekend she does love a crowd singalong so keep your eyes open. The stunning festival site boasts amazing views over Linlithgow Loch and Linlithgow Palace. Party at the Palace have quietly frozen their ticket prices, and capped the capacity at 5,000 per day – that's below permitted levels to ensure it is a festival everyone can feel comfortable at. Festival Director John Richardson said: 'Obviously it's a difficult time across the board for events and so on so a lot of things are all about the numbers, but we want to make sure the spirit of our festival community is right and also that people can afford to come. 'So we have set ticket prices at the same levels as 10 years ago – you can legitimately get a ticket to see all these bands, a comedy fest and much more over two days, for less than the add-on booking fees for a big stadium show. 'This festival is really special, it's all about families and fun, a welcoming environment and lots of room for everyone to relax and do their own thing when they want. That's really at the core for us. 'The people who come here every year to celebrate summer with us are the reason it's such a special event – and we want to make sure they have the best time every time.' The festival is renowned for showcasing emerging local talent – it was the first fest to book The Snuts long before they hit arena stardom. John added: 'This year on the Green Fox Energy Breakthrough Stage there is a really strong line-up across the weekend, as always. 'Laurie Wright, Ecko, Pistol Daisys and very local talent Emily Evans jump out, but there's a lot of potential future stars there – it's something we are very passionate about and proud of. 'That is what Party at the Palace is all about - community. Well, that and SuBo.'

World Hepatitis Day is observed each year on 28 July to raise awareness of viral hepatitis, an inflammation of the liver that causes severe liver disease and liver cancer. This year's theme is Hepatitis: Let's Break It Down, shows urgency, a prompt action to dismantle the financial, social stigma that is attached to this condition against eliminating it. According to data published by the World Health Organisation (WHO) 304 million people are living with chronic hepatitis B and C since 2022, and 1.3 million people died of it in 2022 itself. Dr. Catharia Beohme, officer-in-charge of the WHO South-east Asia region, clearly stated that Viral hepatitis continues to be a needless suffering among thousands of innocent people, silently attacking our liver, spreading cancer, and causing hundreds of thousands of preventable deaths each year. She said, 'Across the Region, an estimated 61 million people live with hepatitis B, and 9 million with hepatitis C. Our Region bears one of the highest burdens of chronic viral hepatitis globally, yet most people living with the disease remain undiagnosed and untreated.' this is a global burden we are all suffering under and this needs to be addressed as son as possible. According world hepatitis alliance, Hepatitis is the world's deadliest virus after COVID-19, and more than 300 million people are living with hepatitis. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Susan Boyle Is Now so Thin and Looks Beautiful! Undo Surprisingly, it is the leading cause of liver cancer. What is Hepatitis Hepatitis is an inflammatory disease of the liver that is caused by infectious viruses and Noninfectious agents, leading to a range of health problems, including severe liver damage and cancer, which we all know how deadly it is. There are 5 major strains of this virus,s namely A, B, C,D and E. While the other is no less than the first, particularly, each of them offer a different kind of liver disease. In particular, types B and C lead to chronic disease in hundreds of millions of people and together are the most common cause of liver cirrhosis, liver cancer and viral hepatitis-related deaths. What are the symptoms of Hepatitis People with hepatitis may or may not exhibit symptoms. Major symptoms include: Fever Malaise Loss of appetite Nausea Diarrhoea Abdominal discomfort Jaundice Dark-coloured urine Specifically, hepatitis B, C, and D can cause liver infection, which can later develop in liver cirrhosis or liver cancer. How to protect ourselves against Hepatitis B and its spread Hepatitis B is an infection of the liver caused by the hepatitis B virus. The infection can be acute (short and severe) or chronic (long term). Hepatitis B can be prevented with a safe and effective vaccine. The vaccine is usually given soon after birth with boosters a few weeks later. It offers nearly 100% protection against the virus. Ways it can be contracted Hepatitis B can commonly spread from mother to her child at birth or through horizontal transmission, especially from an infected child to an uninfected child during the first 5 years of their life. Hepatitis B is also spread by an infected person's needle, tattooing, piercing and exposure to infected blood and body fluids, such as saliva and menstrual, vaginal, and seminal fluids. Transmission of the virus may also occur through the sharing or reuse of contaminated needles and syringes or sharp objects, either in health care settings, in the community or among persons who inject drugs. Sexual transmission is more prevalent in unvaccinated persons with multiple sexual partners. Is it easily diagnosed? Its diagnosis requires a lab test, as its symptoms can mimic other hepatitis symptoms as well. WHO recommends screening in high-prevalence areas, pregnant women, blood donors, and high-risk groups. Only 13% of infected people knew their status in 2022, and 3% were receiving treatment. Coinfection with HIV occurs in about 1% of Hepatitis B cases; treatment for HIV often also treats Hepatitis B (WHO) Hepatitis, especially Hepatitis B remains a significant global health challenge, affecting millions, to reduce this global burden, this is an earnest request to spread as much information about it as possible, as this deadly disease requires a coordinated global action.

When your commute becomes a conference: Microsoft Teams enters cars, and professionals are not thrilled
The work-life balance conversation has reached a newfound peak as employees across industries push harder than ever for more time off and clearer boundaries between their personal and professional lives. However, just as this debate heats up and reaches a border audience, Mercedes-Benz and Microsoft have unveiled a collaboration that throws another tool for blurring borders between work and personal life. Mercedes has made a bold move by integrating Microsoft Teams directly into their vehicles, transforming the daily commute into potential meeting time. The feature allows drivers to join video calls while on the road, using the car's built-in camera and Teams' video capabilities. It's being marketed as the ultimate productivity upgrade, but the reaction online suggests not everyone is convinced this is progress. The company's press release proudly describes how drivers can now "participate in meetings while keeping their hands on the wheel." Yet this development has sparked extensive debate across social media, with some users celebrating the innovation while others see it as yet another rock tied to weigh them down. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Susan Boyle Is Now so Thin and Looks Beautiful! Undo Your car will double as your office The new feature is rolling out in Mercedes's latest vehicles, powered by their operating system and the fourth-generation MBUX interface. Drivers can engage in video calls through Teams, with other participants able to see them during the meeting. The system debuts in the all-new CLA model, designed to help users squeeze productivity out of every minute spent travelling. Mercedes has included safety measures, the video feed automatically switches off when the camera is activated to prevent driver distraction. But these safeguards haven't quieted critics who argue that turning cars into mobile offices represents a fundamental overreach into personal time. The concept clearly divides opinion. While Mercedes envisions a future where every vehicle serves as a mobile workspace, the public response suggests many people aren't particularly enthusiastic about this vision becoming reality. Internet debates why work needs to brought to a car This Teams integration represents more than just technological advancement, it raises serious questions about where work-life balance is heading. For many employees, the commute has traditionally served as a buffer zone between professional and personal life. If that time becomes another opportunity for meetings and work calls, when exactly does the working day end? The response on X (formerly Twitter) has been particularly telling. Users have been quick to mock the concept, with one commenting: "Why would I want Microsoft Teams in my Mercedes? That's what texting is for." The scepticism is palpable, with many questioning whether this represents genuine convenience or simply another way to extend working hours. One user captured the general sentiment perfectly: "I was about to buy a Mercedes until you said Microsoft Teams," accompanying their post with a meme of someone running away in horror. Another added: "Can't wait for Microsoft Teams integration in Mercedes cars. I don't use Teams at work. And I don't own a Merc either." These reactions are built on broader concerns about the creeping expansion of work into previously protected personal time. For employees already struggling with remote work pressures and constant connectivity, the idea of conducting meetings during their commute feels like a step too far. Productivity trap marketed as a tool? Mercedes isn't alone in pushing towards a future where traditional office boundaries disappear entirely. Remote work tools and flexible scheduling have already blurred the lines between professional and personal time significantly. However, the prospect of working from your car during the commute is causing many to question whether this convenience comes at too high a cost. While marketed as a productivity enhancement, many argue this development feeds into an increasingly problematic "always-on" work culture. The ability to conduct meetings while driving to or from work effectively eliminates any clear end to the working day. This particularly concerns employees already dealing with the pressures of constant email access and messaging apps that make genuine downtime increasingly rare. Mercedes remains confident about their vision, planning to integrate additional Microsoft 365 tools, including Copilot, into their vehicles. This expansion would further cement the concept of cars as smart office spaces, regardless of public reservations about the idea. While this feature is for now a rare development, its inclusion reveals company patterns constantly leaning towards being intrusive in employees' personal space. Ready to navigate global policies?
