Min announces reconstruction of Rajgarh Road
1 2 3 4 5 6 Dibrugarh: Union minister of state for external affairs Pabitra Margherita laid the foundation stone for the reconstruction of the dilapidated Rajgarh road from Garhmur Chariali to Lakwa on Sunday. The 11.6 km stretch, which has been in poor condition for years, will be rebuilt at a cost of Rs 3.9 crore under the State-Owned Priority Development Scheme (SOPD-G) for the fiscal year 2025-26. The ceremony was attended by State Transport and Hills Area Development Minister Jogen Mohan and Demow MLA Sushanta Borgohain, among others. The project aims to transform the crucial road link, benefiting thousands of residents in Demow and Sonari assembly constituencies. Margherita emphasised the road's importance for local communities. "Once completed, this road will improve connectivity and ease transportation challenges. It will enhance accessibility, boost economic activities, and ease daily commute," he said. The Rajgarh road has been a major concern for locals, with its pothole-ridden surface causing frequent accidents and delays. Farmers, students, and daily commuters have long demanded repairs, citing hardships in transporting goods and traveling to nearby areas. State transport minister Jogen Mohan said the project would be completed efficiently. "Govt is committed to improving infrastructure in rural Assam. This road reconstruction is a priority, and we will ensure timely completion to minimise public inconvenience," he added. Demow MLA Sushanta Borgohain expressed gratitude for the initiative, calling it a "long-awaited relief" for his constituents. "This road is a lifeline for many villages. Its reconstruction will not only ease travel but also open up new opportunities for local businesses and farmers," he said. The project is expected to be completed within the current fiscal year, bringing much-needed respite to the people.

On Sunday, state water resources minister Pijush Hazarika flagged off a 10-tonne consignment from Demow in Sivasagar district, marking a significant step in Assam's agri-export sector. The paddy, cultivated by farmers in Nitaipukhuri and Demow, showcases the growing international demand for the state's indigenous crops. Joha rice is a fragrant variety unique to Assam, cherished for its distinct aroma, delicate flavour, and small grain size. Primarily grown in the Brahmaputra Valley, it holds cultural significance in Assamese cuisine, often featuring in festive dishes like Pitha, Payokh, and Jolpan. Beyond its culinary appeal, Joha rice is valued for its health benefits, including a low glycemic index and antioxidant properties, making it a sought-after health food. At the flag-off ceremony, minister Pijush Hazarika expressed pride in the export, saying, "The shipment of Joha paddy to Dubai showcases the global recognition of Assam's agricultural heritage. " Thowra constituency MLA Sushanta Borgohain, who attended the event alongside the district agriculture officer and other officials, emphasised the economic potential of the initiative. "Global demand for premium, aromatic rice is increasing, and Joha rice is well-positioned to compete at the highest level. By connecting our local produce to international markets, we are boosting farmers' income while promoting sustainable agriculture," Borgohain said. Farmers from Nitaipukhuri and Demow expressed optimism about this new opportunity. "We have been growing Joha paddy using traditional methods passed down for generations. Seeing our produce reach global markets gives us hope for better prices and recognition of our efforts," said Prabhat Gogoi, a farmer from Nitaipukhuri. The export was facilitated by Jyoti Agricultural Service Group, Sivasagar, with support from the department of agriculture and Assam Agribusiness & Rural Transformation Project.
