Wildfire burning near Halifax business park remains out of control
Smoke billows from wildfire near Halifax's Bayers Lake area 16 hours ago Duration 0:44 Social Sharing A deputy chief with Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency says a wildfire burning near a Halifax business park remains out of control. The fire broke out around 2:30 p.m. AT Tuesday near Susies Lake in a wooded area that borders one of the entrances to Bayers Lake Business Park, about 10 kilometres west of downtown Halifax. Roy Hollett, deputy chief with Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency, said crews will be back on scene this morning to determine its size and to figure out what resources are needed. In an update on Tuesday evening, the Natural Resources Department said the fire was estimated to be between 25 and 30 hectares. Progress was being made and it was not expected to grow overnight, it said. WATCH | Smoke from the fire could be seen across Halifax on Tuesday: What exactly are the stages of a wildfire? 2 years ago So much hard work goes into getting wildfires under control. Here's what that work entails. Twelve firefighters with the Natural Resources Department were expected to be at the site overnight. Hollett said there are currently no homes or businesses evacuated, however Nova Scotia Health's Bayers Lake Community Outpatient Centre, which was evacuated on Tuesday, will remain closed today. "We do encourage people, if you do not need to be in that area, don't go there," Hollett told Information Morning Nova Scotia. On Tuesday, yellow planes could be seen circling around large plumes of smoke. One Natural Resources helicopter was dropping water, as well as three planes that were sent in from New Brunswick to help. The planes were later sent home, but could come back if needed.
