Manchester City exceed £300m spend by signing Norwegian wonderkid

Manchester City have taken their spending this year past £300 million after agreeing a deal to sign Norway wonderkid Sverre Nypan from Rosenborg. Nypan, 18, will move to the Etihad after personal terms are agreed and a medical is passed now that the clubs have agreed a £12.5 million switch. City held off intense competition for the midfielder who is regarded as one of the biggest prospects in Europe. Both Arsenal and Aston Villa made moves for the midfielder. Nypan has been on the radar of Premier League clubs since making his Rosenborg debut aged 15, eight months after arriving from his district club Nardo FK. 'His mentality is something special,' former Rosenborg academy manager Roar Vikvang told Sky Sports, with the teenager billed as the next great young Norwegian player after Martin Odegaard and Erling Haaland. What have City spent on in 2025? With Pep Guardiola's squad in freefall last autumn, the decision was made to bring some of their summer transfer plans forward to the January window, which saw four first-team players and an academy prospect arrive. Omar Marmoush bolstered Guardiola's attack in a deal with Eintracht Frankfurt that could be worth £62.2 million if add-ons are met. Young defenders Vitor Reis (£29.6 million) and Abdukodir Khusanov (£33.6 million) also arrived, while Juma Bah (£5 million) was signed and loaned out to Lens. Spanish midfielder Nico González cost £49.8 million from Porto. This summer, City have moved quickly to land Tijjani Reijnders from AC Milan for £46.9 million to strengthen Guardiola's midfield. With Kevin De Bruyne signing for Napoli on a free transfer, they also landed Rayan Cherki for £30.7 million, while Rayan Ait-Nouri has cost £31.5 million to fill the left-back slot. Marcus Bettinelli arrived for a nominal fee to become City's No 3 goalkeeper. Why have they moved so quickly? Part of this was necessity, with City playing in the Club World Cup and starting their tournament against Wydad AC next Wednesday. There was a transfer window for these clubs to sign players before heading out to the United States and City wanted their business for next season wrapped up before. City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak admitted the club were not aggressive enough in the transfer window last summer and paid the price during the campaign. This time around they have acted quickly to secure their top targets. Where are the new signings in the pecking order? Nypan is likely to head out on loan next season to continue getting regular senior football, as he did at Rosenborg. This is what happened with Bah as well. It is considered better for development to be playing, even if the youngsters would be exposed to training under Guardiola. Reijnders will immediately be in contention for a first-team place as De Bruyne has left. Cherki will compete as an attacking forward, with Phil Foden's action limited last season. Ait-Nouri will push Josko Gvardiol at left-back, although the Croatia defender was playing well centrally last season and Nico O'Reilly emerged at full-back.

Transfer roundup: De Bruyne joins Napoli as Manchester City agree deal for Nypan

Kevin De Bruyne has completed his move to Napoli on a free transfer after leaving Manchester City. The midfielder, who turns 34 this month, joins the Serie A champions three days after scoring a late winner for Belgium against Wales. De Bruyne was greeted by excited fans chanting 'Kevin' when he arrived for his medical and Napoli's social media posts announcing the deal included one showing him wearing a crowd, with a Napoli shield by his right hand and a sword to his left. 'King Kev is here,' the club wrote. De Bruyne made more than 400 appearances for City after joining from Wolfsburg in 2015 and the Premier League club's preparations for a future without him have continued with an agreement to sign Rosenborg's midfielder Sverre Nypan for €14.6m (£12.4m). If the 18-year-old joins he is likely to be loaned out. Although personal terms are yet to be agreed with the Norway under-21 international on a proposed five-year contract, City are confident of sealing the transfer. Nypan became Rosenborg's youngest player at 15 years and 322 days when starting for Norway's 22-times record champions against Jerv on 6 November 2022. Nypan is in line to become City's fifth summer signing as Pep Guardiola revamps his squad. City have £100m-plus in the window after Tijjani Reijnders' acquisition on Wednesday, the Netherlands midfielder arriving from Milan for €55m, joining Rayan Aït-Nouri, Marcus Bettinelli and Rayan Cherki. Man City agree £12.5m fee for Norwegian wonderkid dubbed ‘next Odegaard'

Manchester City have agreed a £12.5m fee to sign the Norwegian teenager Sverre Nypan. The Rosenborg midfielder, who has been compared to Martin Odegaard, is expected to join and become City's fifth signing of a busy summer. City's plan is to send the 18-year-old, who has been offered a five-year contract, out on loan to get first-team experience. Nypan, a Norway Under-21 international, became Rosenborg's youngest ever player when he debuted at the age of 15 and scored his first goal for them at 16. He was named the Young Player of the Year in the Norwegian league for both 2023 and 2024. City have already spent more than £100m this summer by bringing midfielders Tijjani Reijnders, for £46m, and Rayan Cherki, for £31m, and left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri, for £31m, plus goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli, for a nominal fee.

Manchester City agree £12.5m fee to sign Sverre Nypan - with Pep Guardiola's side beating Arsenal and Aston Villa to Rosenborg midfielder

Manchester City are set to sign Rosenborg midfielder Sverre Nypan after agreeing a £12.5million for his services. The 18-year-old's arrival will prove a coup to City who have beaten Premier League rivals Arsenal and Aston Villa to his signature. He will become the club's fifth signing of the summer following the arrivals of Marcus Bettinelli, Rayan Ait-Nouri, Rayan Cherki and Tijjani Reijnders. The teen is expected to go on loan to Girona upon joining Pep Guardiola 's side. The City Group had proposed to sign Nypan on a permanent for Girona in January which prompted the Norway international to consider Villa instead. However, City have now revised their offer. Nypan has already played 70 senior games for Rosenborg, who sit third in the 2025 Eliteserien after 11 games, and is a Norway Under-21 international.
