Kyiv apartment block strike marks the deadliest attack on Ukraine's capital since 2024

Russia War in UkraineFacebookTweetLink Follow The death toll from Russia's heavy bombardment of Ukraine's capital this week has risen to 31 people, marking the deadliest single attack on Kyiv in a year, Ukrainian officials said on Friday. The vast majority were killed in a single strike on an apartment block. Rescue workers have now recovered the bodies of at least 28 people from the destroyed apartment block, including five children, the State Emergency Service (SES) told CNN. At least 159 people were also wounded in the blast. 'This is the highest number of injured children in one night in Kyiv since the beginning of the full-scale invasion,' Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said. More than 100 rescuers scrambled to the scene in Kyiv's western Sviatoshynskyi district, working through the night and removing more than 2,000 tons of rubble as they searched for survivors in an ongoing operation. The building was one of dozens of sites in the Ukrainian capital struck by Russian missiles and drones in the overnight attack, according to Tymur Tkachenko, the head of Kyiv's military administration. He described the strike as a 'direct hit' on the nine-story apartment building, hitting just before 5 a.m. local time Thursday (10 p.m. ET Wednesday). 'Once again, this vile strike by Russia demonstrates the need for increased pressure on Moscow and additional sanctions,' Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Friday. 'No matter how much the Kremlin denies their effectiveness, sanctions do work – and they must be strengthened.' Zelensky added that 'in July alone, Russia used over 5,100 glide bombs against Ukraine, more than 3,800 'Shaheds' (drones), and nearly 260 missiles of various types.' Russia also struck the regions of Donetsk and Kharkiv overnight into Thursday. A strike on a five-story block in the Donetsk region city of Kramatorsk, which partially destroyed the building, killed three people. That was followed by more strikes on Ukraine overnight into Friday, which killed at least six civilians and injured 27 others. This week, US President Donald Trump cited Moscow's killing of Ukrainian civilians as he shortened a window for Russian President Vladimir Putin to negotiate a ceasefire or face greater sanctions. The Kremlin's aerial attacks on Ukrainian population centers have ramped up sharply this year, leaning heavily on cheap-to-manufacture drone swarms that are intended to overwhelm Ukraine's air defenses. Drone and missile attacks are launched nearly every night, with much larger salvos now happening more regularly. The interval between large-scale salvo attacks has gone from about a month to as little as two days, according to new analysis from the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), a Washington DC-based think tank. Meanwhile, the number of munitions Russia uses in these larger scale attacks has risen from about 100 munitions several years ago to nearly 300 munitions in 2025, the CSIS analysis found. CNN's Laura Sharman and Angus Watson contributed to this report.

Seven dead in Kyiv, including 6-year-old, after overnight Russian strikes

KYIV — Russian forces launched drones and missiles across the Ukrainian capital overnight, killing at least seven people including a 6-year-old boy, and injuring dozens more, according to the city's military administration. Timur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv city military administration, said Thursday on Telegram that the overnight attacks included a rocket strike that destroyed the entrance of a nine-story building in the Sviatoshynskyi district, in the city's west. In addition to the seven killed, more than 80 people were injured, among whom were 10 children, Timur said. Kyiv's mayor Vitaliy Klitschko said it represented the largest number of children injured in one night in the capital since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Russia's attack on Kyiv region kills one, sparks fires, Ukraine says

KYIV, June 23 (Reuters) - An overnight Russian drone and missile attack in and around Kyiv killed one person, sparked fires in residential areas and damaged an entrance to a metro station that serves as a bomb shelter, Ukrainian authorities said on Monday. "The Russians' style is unchanged - to hit where there may be people," Timur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv's military administration said on the Telegram messaging app. "Residential buildings, exits from shelters - this is the Russian style." Russia has not commented on the strikes. Both sides deny targeting civilians in the war that Russia launched in February 2022, but thousands of civilians have been killed in the conflict - the vast majority of them Ukrainian. A 68-year-old woman was killed and at least two people were injured in the attack on the broader Kyiv region that surrounds the Ukrainian capital, its governor Mykola Kalashnik said on Telegram. In the capital itself, at least five people were injured, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Telegram. Photos posted by Ukraine's State Emergency Service showed rescuers leading people to safety from several buildings and structures on fire in the dark. The Service said a pregnant woman was among those rescued. The attack caused damage in three of the city's 10 districts, including in several apartment buildings, Klitschko said. An exit to the metro station in Kyiv's Sviatoshynskyi districts was also damaged, as well as an adjacent bus stop, Kyiv's officials said. Kyiv's deep metro stations have been used throughout the war as some of the city's safest bomb shelters. Russia's deadliest attack on Kyiv last week with hundreds of drones killed 28 people and injured more than 150, with Ukrainian officials saying that nearly 30 sites were hit during the multi-wave attack.

At least 14 killed and more than 40 wounded in Kyiv after Russian drone and missile attack

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — A combined Russian missile and drone attack in Kyiv overnight Tuesday killed at least 14 people and wounded 44 others, according to Ukrainian officials. Kyiv City Military Administration head Tymur Tkachenko said 14 people had been killed in the attack which hollowed out a residential building and destroyed dozens of apartments. Emergency workers were at the scene to rescue people from under the rubble. Ukraine's Emergency Service said 44 people were wounded. The attack, the latest in a spate of mass drone and missile attacks on Kyiv, occurred as world leaders convened at the Group of Seven meeting in Canada, which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is expected to attend. The summit runs through Tuesday. Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko told reporters at the scene that a U.S. citizen was killed in the attack after suffering wounds from shrapnel. Explosions could be heard for hours throughout the night on Tuesday. Thirty apartments were destroyed in a single residential block, Klymenko said. People were wounded in the city's Sviatoshynskyi and Solomianskyi districts. Kyiv's Mayor Vitali Klitschko said fires broke out in two other Kyiv districts as a result of falling debris from drones shot down by Ukrainian air defenses. Canada, which assumed the presidency of the G7 this year, invited Zelenskyy to the summit, where he is expected to hold one-on-one meetings with world leaders. Zelenskyy was set to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump in Canada on Tuesday, though the White House announced that Trump would be returning unexpectedly to Washington on Monday night instead of Tuesday night because of tensions in the Mideast. Russia has launched a record number of drones and missiles in recent weeks. Moscow escalated attacks after Ukraine's Security Service agency staged an audacious operation targeting war planes in air bases deep inside Russian territory. Little progress has emerged from direct peace talks held in Istanbul, with the exception of prisoner exchanges, expected to conclude next week, said Zelenskyy. Associated Press, The Associated Press
