Swachhbuckling show: LMC's waste mgmt and green initiatives

1 2 3 4 Lucknow: The city's third-place finish in the national Swachh Survekshan 2024-25 isn't just a symbolic win — it's the result of major structural reforms, technological integration, and active citizen engagement led by the Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC). Here's a breakdown of the work that earned the city its high ranking. The city's strong performance can be attributed to several key initiatives, including the daily processing of 2,100 tonnes of fresh waste at Shivri and the clearance of 6.5 lakh tonnes of legacy waste. Organic waste is managed through composting and Bio-CNG/Bio-CBG plants. A fleet of over 1,250 electric vehicles collects waste in real-time, while public awareness campaigns reached 4 crore people. Additionally, a C&D waste plant and zonal centres were established, 3.5 lakh saplings were planted, and over 250 open gyms were developed, transforming former dump sites into recreational spaces. The introduction of 96 electric sweepers reduced PM10 levels by 41%. The city also showcased sustainability by building roads with plastic waste and creating furniture from seized single-use plastic. Speaking to TOI, mayor Sushma Kharkwal said, "Securing the third place nationally and first in Uttar Pradesh in Swachh Survekshan 2025 is a proud moment for Lucknow. This achievement reflects the commitment of citizens, sanitation workers, and LMC officials. I thank defence minister Rajnath Singh, CM Yogi Adityanath, and ministers AK Sharma and Suresh Khanna for their support. This recognition inspires us to aim higher and lead by example in urban transformation. " Discussing the future plan, the mayor said, "In the next six months, we will install compact garbage transfer stations to prevent garbage from being dumped in the open. We will also expedite the process of making a waste-to-energy plant soon for the city to make it 100% garbage-free." Former LMC commissioner Inderjit Singh, who played a vital role in making the city's sanitation plan and its execution, said, "It's the achievement of the entire LMC officials and workers. There is a lot more to be done for the city, including increasing more green cover, source segregation of garbage, and e-waste management." Additional municipal commissioner Arvind Kumar Rao said, "It's just an example of the participation of the public and municipal corporation partnership. We have included the best techniques in garbage management and sanitation." Municipal commissioner Gaurav Kumar stated, "Door-to-door garbage collection is at 100%. To improve it, user charges have been added to house tax, helping track service coverage and payments. Citizen participation is key to top rankings. The Shivri waste plant will be cleared and converted into a park. " Masood Mallick — CEO of Re Sustainability Ltd, the company running Lucknow Swachhata Abhiyan (LSA) — said: "EV-based smart collection vehicles, India's first IoT-enabled electric street sweepers, modern fixed compactor stations, and a central Command and Control Centre to track performance and optimise services in real time helped Lucknow achieve the swachch ranking."

Amid Swachh success, most sanitation workers work without raincoats

Bhopal: In Bhopal, the jubilation of achieving second place nationally in the Swachh Survekshan 2025 has been dampened by concerns over inadequate provision of essential equipment to sanitation workers. The celebration amongst officials stands in stark contrast to the situation of the city's 8,000 sanitation workers, most of whom continue to work through heavy rains without proper protection. Despite the Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) placing an order worth Rs 50 lakh for raincoats in July 2024, the implementation remains incomplete after a year. "I haven't received a raincoat in over a year," said Kalla, who works in Ward 47. In Ward 43, Gullu Soni shared that his raincoat quickly became unusable from grime and daily wear. Fellow worker Rakesh, also in Ward 43, reported that raincoats had reached the zone office, but were still "awaiting distribution." Meanwhile, Rahul from Ward 69 took pride in Bhopal's national honour but admitted he was still working without a raincoat. This situation highlights a significant disparity: while Bhopal achieves recognition for its sanitation standards, the essential workers responsible for this achievement lack basic protective equipment. In the areas that contributed to the city's high ranking, the reality of workers performing their duties without proper gear contradicts the celebratory atmosphere. Despite Bhopal's improved standing in official assessments, sanitation workers persist in their duties of maintaining drains and streets with limited resources. When contacted BMC officials were in Delhi and unreachable.

Dumpsite success may have cost Bhopal top spot in waste remediation

Bhopal: Bhopal earned the second rank nationally in the million-plus cities category of Swachh Survekshan 2025, coming within reach of the number one position. But its landmark success in waste remediation may have inadvertently cost it crucial points. In 2022, the city fully remediated the 37-acre Bhanpur dumpsite, a landfill active for nearly 40 years. Of the total land, 21 acres were repurposed for public use, while 16 acres were converted into green space. Yet in the latest survey cycle, Bhopal was awarded 0% under the "Remediation of Dumpsites" indicator—a dramatic drop from its previous 100% score. Had it got the 100% score in remediation (which BMC got in 2023), Bhopal would have won the top spot beating Ahmedabad by one point. According to Indicator 3.11 of the Swachh Survekshan toolkit, a city that has already completed remediation is eligible for points if it submits details including the total waste remediated, year of completion, and duration of the activity. In contrast, Ahmedabad, which topped the rankings, received full marks in every category, including dumpsite remediation—thanks to active or recently completed projects. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Could Be the Best Time to Trade Gold in 5 Years IC Markets Learn More Undo As per the survey's Indicator 3.11, past remediation can earn points if documented thoroughly. With no comment from BMC, it's unclear if a technicality or documentation gap led to the zero. Either way, Bhopal's success story became the very reason it missed the crown. *** Bhopal vs Ahmedabad 100% in door-to-door waste collection, processing, and cleanliness across zones 95% (Bhopal) vs. 94% (Ahmedabad) in source segregation Remediation of Dumpsites: 0% (Bhopal), 100% (Ahmedabad)

From City of Lakes to Clean City: Bhopal Ranked Second in Swachh Survey

Bhopal: India's fresh batch of clean cities has made its mark, with a new lineup emerging as top contenders in the 'Swachh Shehar' charts. The rankings this year was shaped by a key structural change—previous champions like Indore were shifted into a separate League, allowing other cities a chance to rise. Among these, Bhopal climbed to second place nationally, missing the top spot by just 12 points. Indore has held that position for seven straight years, the tag of India's cleanest city. Bhopal's performance this year proves it's not far behind. "This achievement is a result of the cooperation and awareness of the dedicated employees of the Bhopal Municipal Corporation, Safai Mitras, officials, and above all, the people of Bhopal," said Bhopal mayor Malti Rai. Out of maximum 12,500 score, Bhopal got 12067. Indore scored 12,080 points out of 12,500 in Swachh Survekshan 2025. Under the Swachh Bharat Mission , Bhopal has attained recognition as India's second cleanest city amongst municipalities with populations exceeding 10 lakh in the Swachh Survekshan 2024-25. The award ceremony took place on Thursday at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, where President of India Droupadi Murmu presented the honour to MP Urban Development and Housing Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya, Bhopal Mayor Malti Rai, and BMC commissioner Harendra Narayan. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like An engineer reveals: One simple trick to get internet without a subscription Techno Mag Learn More Undo Bhopal secured a 7-Star ranking in the "Garbage-Free City" category while maintaining its status as India's cleanest state capital and Water+ city status. This performance positioned Bhopal as second nationally and first in the state for cities exceeding 10 lakh population. BMC achieved this distinction through systematic implementation of cleanliness activities, emphasising waste reduction, infrastructure enhancement and waste processing. The previous year witnessed substantial improvements in garbage management systems, said a BMC press statement on Thursday. *** Urban Local Body: Bhopal Population Category: Million Plus Cities (>10 lakh population) State Rank: 1 (Top in Madhya Pradesh) National Rank: 2 (Second Cleanest City in India in its category) Performance Indicators Indicator Score Insights Door-to-Door Collection 100% Full coverage—reflects strong execution Source Segregation 95% High public participation in waste sorting Waste Processing 100% All collected waste is scientifically treated Garbage Free City (GFC) 7-Star Highest possible rating—shows systemic waste management success ODF Status Water+ Indicates advanced sanitation infrastructure, beyond basic ODF levels Summary Bhopal's profile reflects top-tier urban cleanliness and waste management: The city not only collects and processes 100% of its waste, but also demonstrates high segregation at source, a critical behavior-driven metric. Coimbatore city improves its cleanliness ranking from 35 to 28

1 2 Coimbatore: The Coimbatore Corporation has been ranked 28 out of 44 cities in the cleanliness survey (Swachh Survekshan 2025) under the category of cities with population of more than 10 lakh. The cleanliness ranking was released on Thursday by the ministry of housing and urban affairs (MoHUA). Coimbatore has shown significant improvement in rankings. It stood at 35th place in 2023 and 46th place in 2022. In Tamil Nadu, Coimbatore has maintained its top position for the third consecutive year while Chennai and Madurai have been ranked 38 and 40, respectively. The survey was conducted for the financial year 2024-25 based on various sanitation indicators. Indore, Surat, and Navi Mumbai have topped the ranking list for the second consecutive year. According to the survey results, under eight major indicators, the city has achieved 100% cleanliness in residential areas, market areas, and water bodies. However, in door-to-door collection and source segregation, the city has achieved only 40% and 25%, respectively. For waste generation versus processing, the corporation has achieved only 32%. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like They Were So Beautiful Before; Now Look At Them; Number 10 Will Shock You. The city has also been upgraded to Open Defecation Free (ODF) ++ certification. Commenting on areas for improvement, a senior corporation officer said, "These results are based on random samples. The door-to-door collection has been effectively implemented. However, source segregation needs more attention and awareness among people. Advanced processing facilities require at least 80% segregated waste, which remains a challenge when people are hesitant to follow the guidelines." Meanwhile, Namakkal has been awarded the title 'Promising Swachh Shehar' of Tamil Nadu.
