A Gurugram resident filed a complaint on Swachhata App—The internet reacts

In a city where civic issues often take time to be addressed, a recent experience shared by a Gurugram resident has brought attention to the effectiveness of the Swachhata App. The user reported multiple garbage dumping sites in their locality and was surprised to see action being taken within the same day– an outcome that has sparked both appreciation and conversation online. Complaint filed in the morning, cleaning in progress by evening The incident came to light after a local Reddit user shared their experience on the subreddit r/Gurgaon with the title: 'Peak Gurgaon Moment, I Posted on Swachhata App and it worked.' The user said they had reported three garbage dumping spots in S Block, Sector 24, where trash and discarded furniture had been lying untouched for over a week. 'For the last week, the garbage and discarded furniture were lying in the same place with no hope for cleaning,' the user wrote. 'Yesterday, I read about this Swachhata app and, with zero hopes, I posted three complaints this morning.' To their amazement, the results were visible within hours. 'In the evening, I came to the balcony. Two of those spots were already cleaned, and the last big one, where tons of garbage had been thrown, was being cleared by a tractor trolley and workers,' they added. Calling the experience 'literally amazing,' the user said they were genuinely impressed by the quick turnaround. Reddit post: Social media users react with interest and skepticism The post sparked responses from other residents, some praising the app's effectiveness, others pointing out delays in their own cities. 'I'm definitely going to try this out too,' one user wrote, showing interest in using the platform. Another added, 'Didn't work for Delhi. Added a few weeks back, no response. Ticket still open.' Some residents flagged persistent issues. One user commented, 'Anyone tried this for that major dump near Ardee Mall? The one that blocks two lanes?' Others focused on awareness, with one saying, 'This app needs more visibility. How can we get more people to use it?' Gurugram's waste woes under the spotlight While such prompt action is not always the norm, concerns over sanitation in Gurugram have been raised consistently by residents over time. According to a report by India Today, earlier this month, a French national who had been living in the city for several years voiced her concerns on social media, describing the local living conditions as challenging and expressing frustration over ongoing cleanliness issues. What the Swachhata App is designed to do As per sbmurban(dot)org, the Swachhata App, introduced as part of the Swachh Bharat Mission , is a digital tool that enables citizens to report sanitation and solid waste-related issues. Each complaint is geo-tagged and directed to the relevant municipal authorities for action. Times of India has not independently verified the claims made in the post. A Gurugram resident, annoyed by the garbage dumped around their house, were in for a pleasant surprise after their complaint was acknowledged and resolved the same day. The resident shared that piles of garbage and discarded furniture had littered the area for a week, with little hope of a swift cleanup. This was when they learned about the Swachhata App through which they filed a complaint and did not expect anything to happen. 'For last 1 week, The garbage and waste furniture was lying down on the same place with no hope for cleaning. Yesterday I read about this swachhata app and with zero hopes I posted three complaints today morning, (sic)" the resident from Gurugram wrote on Reddit. 'In the evening, I came to the balcony, two of those spots were already cleaned and the last big spot where tons of garbage was thrown is being cleaned by tractor troller and workers," the resident further added. Gurugram Garbage Problem Gurugram commuters have reported that garbage accumulating along Golf Course Extension Road and Southern Peripheral Road severely disrupts their travel, with the unbearable stench making it impossible to even roll down car windows. But why all of a sudden? According to a Hindustan Times report, many workers and garbage collection staff have left Gurugram following a police verification drive that allegedly included random checks, detentions, and threats of deportation. What Is Swachhata app? Dirt lying around your house? Do not want to approach the local Municipal Corporation office? Simply snap a photo of the unkempt dustbin or a pile of waste lying around and post it on the Swachhata app, and the municipal team will address the issue within 24 hours. Additionally, an action will be taken against employees if your issue remains unresolved. A resident can also file complaints about the community toilet water or street lights. The civic-related issue will then be sent to the city corporation, and a 'sanitary inspector" will be assigned to the ticket you raised. How Can You File A Complaint? The Swachhata smartphone app is available on both iOS and Android for download. Once installed, the app allows you to report various local issues, such as uncleaned dustbins, dead animals, public toilet maintenance, or water supply problems. The app's description also states that the photo you submit will capture the location via GPS. You can also mention the nearby landmark or provide a complete address as per your discretion. The Swachhata app will also send you regular updates about the job done by the personnel. If the 'resolved" image is unsatisfactory, users can reopen the ticket to ensure the issue is addressed until a satisfactory resolution is achieved. Swachh Survekshan 2024-25: Puttur CMC bags eighth rank in Karnataka

The Puttur City Municipal Council (CMC) in Dakshina Kannada has secured eighth rank in Karnataka in the Swachh Survekshan 2024-25, conducted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. Referring to the Puttur CMC, which has been ranked among the top 10 urban local bodies (ULBs) in the State, its Commissioner, Madhu S. Manohar, told The Hindu: 'The achievement is the outcome of a holistic, innovative, and people-centric approach to solid waste and sanitation management.' He stated that the city achieved 100% door-to-door waste collection and strengthened source segregation at the household level, enabling effective processing and reducing the landfill burden. A key innovation was the successful generation of Bio-CNG from wet waste, converting organic waste into clean energy. Another sustainable initiative was recycling single-use plastics into plastic lumps, which are now being used to manufacture irrigation pipes, promoting the circular economy and resource reuse. In sanitation, Puttur significantly improved the cleanliness and maintenance of public and community toilets, and installed sanitary napkin vending machines and incinerators in women's toilets to enhance menstrual hygiene management, he said. The commissioner stated that the city has also implemented a structured e-waste collection system, encouraging citizens to safely dispose of electronic waste through designated drop-off points, thereby preventing environmental harm. 'These advancements were supported by robust IEC campaigns, school and community engagement, and efficient use of grievance redressal platforms like the Swachhata App, resulting in high levels of positive citizen feedback. The combined efforts of municipal staff, sanitation workers, elected representatives, and committed leadership have transformed Puttur into a model of urban cleanliness and sustainable waste management,' Mr. Manohar said. It is worth mentioning that Puttur CMC has been converting wet waste into Bio-Compressed Natural Gas (BioCNG) through a private partnership for the past year. The BioCNG is being used to operate six municipal vehicles. The BioCNG is produced by Krishna Muliya Green Energy LLP at a plant in Bannur. The plant was established by the LLP under the Build, Own, Operate, and Transfer (BOOT) model on civic land. The plant is financed and operated by the LLP. The firm will have to hand over the plant to the municipality after 40 years. Meanwhile, Mangaluru City Corporation has bagged 25th rank and Udupi City Municipal Council 48th rank in Swachh Survekshan 2024-25 among ULBs in Karnataka. President Droupadi Murmu conferred Swachh Survekshan 2024-25 Awards in Delhi on July 17.
