Transfer work to do as clock ticks down to new season

The feeling at Swansea City is that they have done smart business in the transfer market so far this summer, but there will surely be a recognition that there is plenty more still to new Championship season is a little over a fortnight away and, as was the case this time last year, Swansea's squad looks thin in have been five signings so far – centre-backs Cameron Burgess and Ricardo Santos, midfielder Ethan Galbraith, winger Zeidane Inoussa and young striker Bobby Widell is a sixth new face, having joined up with Swansea this summer after his move was agreed during the previous transfer window, while Andy Fisher, Jerry Yates and youngsters Cameron Congreve and Joel Cotterill are back in Wales after loan spells of the squad that finished last season, Jon McLaughlin, Harry Darling, Kyle Naughton, Cyrus Christie, Kristian Pedersen, Nathan Tjoe-A-On, Joe Allen, Hannes Delcroix, Myles Peart-Harris and Lewis O'Brien have Kuharevich has said a permanent farewell following his loan spell at Hibernian, while Nathan Broome is another name on the list of exits having joined Bolton Wanderers this week after last spring's loan spell at Port departures are likely, with Josh Ginnelly and Yates seemingly surplus to requirements and Ben Lloyd set to go out on loan. So a tally of 12 departures so far may soon rise to 14, with only nine players – including Congreve and Cotterill – coming the other this is a squad, remember, which many felt was light in certain departments last season – even before the mid-season sales of Azeem Abdulai and captain Matt it stands, Swansea have only two senior goalkeepers so are in need of another option the likes of Ben Cabango and Santos injured, Alan Sheehan also looks short of alternatives in central defence, where long-serving midfielder Jay Fulton has been forced to fill in during this week's pre-season right-back, it seems youngster Sam Parker – who has had a small taste of first-team football - is next in line should anything happen to Josh Key, while the next left-back off the rank should anything happen to Josh Tymon is 19-year-old academy product Seb were lucky Tymon proved so durable last season given their lack of options on the left side of defence. They surely cannot gamble on the former Stoke City man playing almost every game once more in there is depth anywhere in Sheehan's squad, it is in midfield, with the versatile Widell and Galbraith now on Swansea wanted to bring O'Brien back, so there will presumably be an appetite to look elsewhere with the Nottingham Forest man now heading for Wrexham. The fact that Wrexham have been able to trump Swansea financially in their pursuit of O'Brien is a reminder that the south Wales club are not one of the Championship's big goes a long way to explaining why they have signed only one player who is a proven performer in the second tier in Burgess – and he was available on a free with his contract up at Ipswich looked reasonably well stocked out wide, but will surely be in the market for a new striker should Yates say his McBurnie is still available but, as with O'Brien, there have been big question marks all along over whether Swansea could fund a deal for their former is the case in various positions, Swansea will need to find answers fairly soon.

Forward thinking from Rams on eve of new season

Ramsbottom United are thrilled to announce that ex-professional forward Jamie Proctor has joined the club ahead of the start of our 2025/26 campaign, writes Steve Tinniswood. With an EFL career spanning 14 years, Preston-born Proctor came through the academy of his home-town club before earning his first professional contract at Deepdale midway though the 2009/10 season. A transfer to Swansea City in 2012 was followed by moves to Crawley Town, Fleetwood Town and Bradford City, making nearly 160 appearances for the three clubs, scoring 32 goals. The 2016/17 season was split between Bolton Wanderers and a loan period at Carlisle United before moving to Rotherham United. Although his debut season was cut short in August after a serious knee injury, The Millers won promotion which brought a return to the Championship for Proctor for the first time since his early days at PNE. After making 18 appearances in that 2018/19 season, scoring 4 goals, a period of loan moves followed with the likes of Scunthorpe United, AFC Flyde, Newport County and Wigan Athletic all enjoying the services of the 6'2″ striker. A move to Port Vale in July 2021 was initially fragmented by various injuries but a Di Canio-esque scissor kick against Sutton United earned Jamie the Goal of the Season award as Vale went on to secure promotion via the play-offs at Wembley Stadium. Unfortunately more injury woes curtailed his appearances in the 2022/23 season and a move to Barrow followed. Jamie retired from professional football at the end of the 2023/24 season having made 27 appearances for the League Two side. Last season was spent in the National League North with Southport where Jamie made 35 appearances for Haig Avenue outfit, finding the net 3 times. Talking ahead of our visit to Garstang on Saturday, where Rams fans can expect to get their first look at Jamie in action, Manager Steve Wilkes was understandably delighted with his latest acquisition. 'To get a signing like Jamie Proctor over the line just shows how ambitious the club is,' said Wilkes. 'He'll bring a wealth of experience with him and hopefully a lot of goals as well. 'He's fitted in well with the lads and we just need to get him up to speed fitness wise and we know we'll have one of the best centre forwards at our level.' Jamie was also looking forward to getting started at the HWRS: 'Once I talked to Wilkesy and Teaguey and heard about the club, I knew it would be a great place to come and play football,' said Proctor. 'I live local and it fits perfectly around what else I do. I've known Rob & Teaguey for years so it was an easy decision to come in and enjoy some football again.' Rammy have also signed Nick Hepple who you'll have noticed was in the squad for yesterday's friendly win at Garstang. The 33 year old forward joins us after spells at Witton Albion and Chadderton last season as Manager Steve Wilkes makes his final preparations ahead of next weekend's curtain raiser against Atherton LR. "Nick's another good addition to the squad who is experienced at this level and above," said Wilkes. "He will bring a different quality to what we already have, he knows where the back of the net is and I'm really looking forward to working with him." After making an appearance in the second half yesterday, Blackburn-born Hepple talked about what the Rams fans can expect during the season ahead. "All I can say is I'm happy to join a club that's pushing to climb the league and help get promotion and be a part of a team full of winners," explained Hepple. "What you will see from me is hunger and goals! You'll get 110 per cent week in week out!"

Captain Cabango among injury concerns for Swansea

Swansea City are assessing Ben Cabango's fitness with the Wales centre-back among a number of defensive injury concerns for Alan Sheehan. Swansea captain Cabango, 25, missed the friendly win over Stevenage in Spain last weekend after picking up a problem during the club's pre-season training camp. Cabango was again missing on Wednesday as Swansea were beaten 2-1 in another pre-season fixture by League Two side Cheltenham Town. "Ben just felt something," Sheehan said. "We want to look further into that without risking him in the next few days." There was further bad news at Cheltenham as summer signing Ricardo Santos was forced off in the first half. "He landed really funnily. We will have to assess that and see how he is," Sheehan told Swansea's website. "[There have been] quite a few little things really that are freakish and unfortunate at the moment. "It's about not risking anybody at the moment so get him (Santos) off and assess him straight away." Latest Swansea City news, analysis and fan views Snoop Dogg - why Swansea and what next? With academy product Filip Lissah nursing an ankle problem suffered during pre-season, Cameron Burgess is Swansea's only fit senior central defender with their Championship opener at Middlesbrough only 16 days away. Swansea lost defensive regular Harry Darling to Norwich City this summer, while Hannes Delcroix returned to Burnley after a loan spell and Cyrus Christie, Kyle Naughton and Kristian Pedersen were released. Attacking midfielder Eom Ji-Sung, meanwhile, is due back in training on Thursday having missed the Spanish trip with what Sheehan called "a little twist of the ankle". Florian Bianchini is another player who was absent at Cheltenham. Sheehan revealed Swansea will meet Barnsley in a behind-closed-doors game on Friday before they play another pre-season friendly at Exeter City on Saturday.
