The next tech revolution must revise history, put humans before greed

Maybe it is time to revisit what Mahatma Gandhi said during the Swaraj movement Ajit Balakrishnan Listen to This Article One of the enduring mysteries in my life has been trying to understand why the Industrial Revolution, which started in England in the mid-18th century and introduced spinning and weaving machines, did not first happen in India. After all, India was producing most of the world's cotton thread and cloth at that time. Whenever I ask this, I get the answer: 'Indian labour costs were so low that nobody needed to invent machines to spin or weave.' The term 'Industrial Revolution' was popularised by the English economic historian Arnold Toynbee in an 1882 lecture at Oxford University to describe how

IUML brings ‘Op Sindoor' to Nilambur bypoll campaign

KOZHIKODE: IUML leader K M Shaji has brought in Operation Sindoor, India's reaction to the massacre of 26 people at Pahalgam in Kashmir, in the campaign for the ensuing Nilambur by-election, asking LDF candidate M Swaraj whether he sticks to his earlier stand on the futility of wars. Speaking to reporters in Nilambur on Thursday, Shaji said the most important political issue in the country now is war. 'Swaraj's Facebook post on war was widely discussed. He issued another post when it became a talking point,' Shaji said. 'Our leader E T Muhammad Basheer, among others, is travelling to all parts of the world to convince them that the war was instigated by Pakistan. We would like to know whether Swaraj sticks to his earlier stand that the war was unnecessary after he became a candidate,' Shaji asked. 'We feel that the war was imperative. It was a wound on the self-respect of Muslims as believers,' he said. The insistence of the terrorist to recite 'kalima' and the murder of the male members in front of women were a bullet that passed through the hearts of Muslims, he said.

All eyes on Kerala bypoll ahead of Assembly elections next year, CPM banks on M Swaraj

THE CPI(M)'s decision on Friday to field popular former student leader and party Secretariat member M Swaraj as the candidate for the forthcoming Nilambur Assembly bypoll has officially drawn the battlelines in the high-profile seat. The bypoll, which is slated for June 19, was necessitated after the resignation of sitting MLA P V Anvar in January. Anvar is a two-term Independent legislator who was backed by the CPI(M). He was once close to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, but their relationship is said to have soured in the last couple of years. Anvar went on to join the Trinamool Congress (TMC) after his resignation. While he has not announced his candidature yet, he has said the bypoll in Nilambur would be a fight against 'Pinarayism'. Alongside the high-stakes of this bypoll, the timing is crucial for the CPI(M) as it prepares for the Assembly elections in Kerala next year, in the face of anti-incumbency of two terms. The entry of Swaraj, a Nilambur native, means the CPI(M) is determined to put up a strong fight in the seat that it last contested in 2006. Announcing him as the party candidate, CPI(M) state secretary M V Govindan said, 'The party wanted Swaraj to lead this political fight and the party is going to make great strides in the constituency. This bypoll will reflect the gains the Left is going to make in the coming local body elections this year and the Assembly polls next year.' Swaraj has had a steep rise in the CPI(M). He started off with the Student Federation of India (SFI), the CPI(M)'s youth wing, and rose to become the state secretary of another party-linked student outfit, the Democratic Youth Federation of India. In the 2016 Assembly elections, he defeated Congress veteran K Babu in Tripunithura constituency. He, however, lost the 2021 elections from the same seat. The following year, he was inducted into the Secretariat. Nilambur, which is part of the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat, was a Congress bastion, with party veteran Aryadan Muhammed winning the seat continuously from 1987 to 2016, until Anvar entered the picture. An up and coming leader at the time, who was previously with the Congress, Anvar was supported by the CPI(M) in the 2016 polls. He ended up defeating Muhammed's son Aryadan Shoukath, who was contesting on the Congress ticket, by 11,500 votes. He retained the seat again in 2021 by a margin of 2,700 votes. For the coming bypoll, the Congress has again fielded Shoukath. Anvar initially demanded that the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) give the Nilambur ticket to his TMC but was snubbed by the Congress. Anvar has threatened to field his own candidate to hamper the UDF's prospects, but has so far not done so. The BJP has not yet decided to contest from the seat, with party state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar saying the by-election 'was foisted upon the people', considering the Assembly elections are just a year away. The CPI(M) is hoping to reach out to the 45% Hindu vote in Nilambur, especially with the BJP out of the battle. About 43% of the population in Nilambur is Muslim, as per the 2011 Census.

CPIM names M Swaraj as LDF candidate for Kerala bypoll on June 19

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Friday announced M Swaraj as the Left Democratic Front's (LDF) candidate for the Nilambur Assembly by-election in Kerala, setting the stage for a heated contest with the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF), which has already named Aryadan Shoukath as its by-election, scheduled for June 19, was necessitated by the resignation of PV Anvar, who had won the seat twice with LDF support. Anvar stepped down after falling out with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, citing issues with the Chief Minister's political secretary and Additional Director General of Police Ajith Kumar. He subsequently joined the Trinamool Congress. His exit has sparked tensions within the UDF, as Anvar is reportedly opposed to Shoukath's state secretary MV Govindan made the announcement following the party state secretariat meeting. Swaraj, a former Member of the Legislative Assembly who represented the Tripunithura constituency from 2016 to 2021, hails from Nilambur in Malappuram district. He is currently a member of the CPI(M) state secretariat. He lost to Congress candidate K Babu in the 2021 elections. Announcing Swaraj's candidature, Govindan said the LDF aims to make a 'significant advance' in the Nilambur by-election. He noted that Swaraj was selected with the understanding that the by-poll would be among the most intense political contests in recent times. He also described Nilambur as a politically important sharply criticised Anvar, calling him a "Judas who betrayed the LDF" and remarked that Kerala is witnessing his 'pitiful state' as he struggles to find space within the Congress-led to the media, Swaraj said that Nilambur has been historically favourable to the Left and that many people across political lines agree that the Left is best suited to govern the state. He expressed confidence that the election results would reflect continued public support for the LDF government.'The contest is not against individuals, but against anti-Left forces,' Swaraj stated, calling on secular-minded voters to ensure the continuation of the Left to Swaraj's entry into the fray, Shoukath welcomed the contest. 'It's only when there is a defender on the field that the forward feels the thrill of scoring a goal,' he said in BJP-led National Democratic Alliance has not yet announced its candidate for the by-election. Meanwhile, the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) has announced Sadik Naduthodi, the party's Malappuram district vice president, as its candidate for the upcoming Nilambur marks a shift in the party's approach, as SDPI had refrained from contesting the last by-election and Lok Sabha polls, instead extending support to the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF). CPI(M) names ex-MLA M Swaraj as candidate for Nilambur bypoll on June 19

Kochi: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Friday named, M Swaraj, former MLA and state secretariat member as its candidate for the upcoming by-election to the Nilambur assembly constituency in Kerala scheduled for June 19. The decision was announced by CPI(M)'s state secretary MV Govindan, following the party's state secretariat meeting in Thiruvananthapuram. Swaraj, who represented the Thripunithura assembly constituency in Ernakulam district between 2016 and 2021 as a member of the legislative assembly (MLA), will take on Congress candidate Aryadan Shoukath in the bypoll. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is yet to announce its candidate. The bye-election was necessitated after independent MLA from Nilambur PV Anvar resigned as legislator on January 13, following which the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) appointed him as the party's state convenor in Kerala. Anvar, who had won as a Left Democratic Front (LDF)-backed Independent in 2016 and 2021 assembly elections from Nilambur in Malappuram district, broke ranks with the CPI(M)-led LDF last year over a range of issues. Anvar and the AITC have demanded inclusion in the Congress-led UDF fold. A decision on the matter is pending. After he was nominated by the party, Swaraj told reporters that 'the votes would be cast in favour of the Left as vindication of its developmental achievements in the last nine years.' 'A wide section of people across party lines agree today that the LDF best governs Kerala. The common people in the state are the beneficiaries of the developmental and welfare initiatives that the government has taken. They have love and trust for the government. This will reflect in Nilambur too. The stand that the CPI(M) and LDF have taken against communal forces has always been welcomed by secular voters. We are very confident about our chances,' Swaraj said.
