CPI(M) names ex-MLA M Swaraj as candidate for Nilambur bypoll on June 19

Kochi: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Friday named, M Swaraj, former MLA and state secretariat member as its candidate for the upcoming by-election to the Nilambur assembly constituency in Kerala scheduled for June 19.
The decision was announced by CPI(M)'s state secretary MV Govindan, following the party's state secretariat meeting in Thiruvananthapuram.
Swaraj, who represented the Thripunithura assembly constituency in Ernakulam district between 2016 and 2021 as a member of the legislative assembly (MLA), will take on Congress candidate Aryadan Shoukath in the bypoll. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is yet to announce its candidate.
The bye-election was necessitated after independent MLA from Nilambur PV Anvar resigned as legislator on January 13, following which the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) appointed him as the party's state convenor in Kerala. Anvar, who had won as a Left Democratic Front (LDF)-backed Independent in 2016 and 2021 assembly elections from Nilambur in Malappuram district, broke ranks with the CPI(M)-led LDF last year over a range of issues.
Anvar and the AITC have demanded inclusion in the Congress-led UDF fold. A decision on the matter is pending.
After he was nominated by the party, Swaraj told reporters that 'the votes would be cast in favour of the Left as vindication of its developmental achievements in the last nine years.'
'A wide section of people across party lines agree today that the LDF best governs Kerala. The common people in the state are the beneficiaries of the developmental and welfare initiatives that the government has taken. They have love and trust for the government. This will reflect in Nilambur too. The stand that the CPI(M) and LDF have taken against communal forces has always been welcomed by secular voters. We are very confident about our chances,' Swaraj said.

India does not send dossiers any more, we only give a befitting reply, says Nadda

Bharatiya Janata Party national president J.P. Nadda on Saturday (May 31, 2025) said a safe and strong India is marching ahead under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership after the display of the nation's power during Operation Sindoor. 'The operation has only been halted, while the fight against Pakistan-sponsored terrorism will continue,' Mr. Nadda said. Mr. Nadda was on a day's visit to Jaipur to participate in the celebrations marking the 300th birth anniversary of Ahilyabai Holkar, the former queen of the Malwa kingdom, attend the BJP's 'Tiranga Yatra', and interact with the party workers. He spoke at two functions at the Rajasthan International Centre (RIC) and the Entertainment Paradise Hall, besides addressing the BJP workers at the Sanganer airport. Mr. Nadda said India had made it clear through its surgical strikes [in Pakistan], air strikes and Operation Sindoor that a 'befitting reply' would be given to the attackers by entering their own territory. 'India does not send dossiers [to Pakistan] any more, like the one after the 26/11 attack. Modi ji doesn't complain, he executes what he says,' he said. The new normal The BJP president said the Operation Sindoor, which had demonstrated India's military capability, had handed down a punishment to Pakistan 'beyond its imagination', as promised by Mr. Modi. 'Nine terror hotspots, including the headquarters of the Lashkar-e-Taiba and the Jaish-e-Mohammed, were destroyed in 22 minutes. Eleven air bases [in Pakistan] were also destroyed. This is the new normal,' he said. While affirming that Operation Sindoor would continue as long as Pakistan nurtures terrorism, Mr. Nadda called upon the BJP workers to apprise the people of the party's national security policy, and come forward to defend the nation. Disburses aid At the women's empowerment programme at RIC, Mr. Nadda flagged off 150 Kalika patrolling units of the Rajasthan Police and transferred financial assistance to the beneficiaries of Lakhpati Didi Yojana, Lado Protsahan Yojana, SC/ST pre-matric scholarship scheme, and the distance education scheme. He also launched the Swasth Nari Chetana Abhiyan and the Garbh Pathshala Yojana on the occasion. Mr. Nadda, who holds the Health & Family Welfare portfolio as a Minister in the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government at the Centre, said the culture of politics had changed in the country after 2014. 'Instead of blame game, every section of society is being empowered now,' he said. 'Modiji has made accountability and responsibility the new definitions of politics. We are willing to give report cards for our work… The double-engine government in Rajasthan is engaged in public service with its new schemes for all sections of society,' Mr. Nadda said. Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, Union Ministers Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and Bhagirath Choudhary, former Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, and BJP State president Madan Rathore were among those who attended functions along with Mr. Nadda. Mr. Nadda also visited the Raj Bhavan to meet Governor Haribhau Bagade.

‘Serious errors' in SSC evaluation a blot on the government, say student organisations

Leaders of student organisations have slammed the TDP-led coalition government for 'serious errors' in the evaluation of SSC answer sheets, and have accused it of failing the student community. All India Student Federation (AISF) State vice-president Sai Kumar said, in the haste to release the SSC results in record time and gain mileage out of it, the persons handling the evaluation task lost focus and delivered inaccurate results. He said, for the first time in history, as many as 66,363 students applied for re-evaluation and, out of them, over 11,000, who were earlier declared failed, now passed. Their percentage of marks also significantly increased. Stating that the inaccurate results caused immense disappointment to many students, he said there were reports of a few distraught students attempting suicide. Mr. Sai Kumar said it was unfortunate that despite such gross mistake, HRD Minister Nara Lokesh had not made any statement on the issue so far. Student Federation of India State president P. Rammohan Rao and secretary K. Prasanna Kumar accused the government of finding scapegoats in teachers for its own failures. They alleged that the authorities were in a hurry to commence Intermediate classes in favour of the corporate institutions. They said drifting from the usual practice of allocating 15 days' time for completion of evaluation, the government brought pressure on teachers to wind up in a week, leading to the errors. Citing examples, they said a student named Mokshitha secured 21 marks in Social Studies initially, but scored 84 after re-evaluation, another student from Bapatla scored 23 marks in Social Studies, but secured 96 after re-evaluation, and in Eluru, a student wrote a 14-page answer, but only eight pages were evaluated. Stating that the students suffered immensely due to the government's negligence, they demanded that action against teachers should be dropped and the re-evaluation fees collected from students should be refunded.

Cong member blames police at DGR's press conference

Mangaluru: The Muslim community's anger towards the Congress govt became evident following a Congress leader's emotional outburst regarding Abdul Rahiman's brutal killing during district minister Dinesh Gundu Rao's press conference here on Saturday. Congress leader Usman Kallapu, a former chairman of the standing committee in Ullal City Municipal Council, intervened when the minister was briefing media persons about the law and order situation in the district. Usman blamed that the hate speeches made by Hindutva leaders were the immediate reason for the murder of Abdul Rahiman. However, this made Rao angry, and he took Usman to task for interfering at a press briefing. Rao asked Usman not to speak during the press briefing, and when the latter continued to blame the police failure, the minister asked party leaders to send him out of the conference hall of the Circuit House. Later, Usman Kallapu told reporters that the police should arrest those who made provocative speeches during the 'Bajpe Chalo' rally, which was organised to demand justice for Suhas Shetty. "Immediate arrests should be made for individuals inciting violence against others. I advocate for the protection of innocent lives and seek only justice. Being a Congress functionary myself, I urge the Congress govt to take action against those who provoke perpetrators of violence," he said. In fact, none of the Congress leaders from the Muslim community, who announced their resignations, attended the grievance meeting with the district minister. Shahul Hameed KK, president of the minority wing of the Dakshina Kannada District Congress, and several other Congress office bearers had announced their resignation over law and order failure in Dakshina Kannada at a meeting of Muslim functionaries held in the city on Thursday. Former opposition leader of the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) council, Abdul Ravoof, who also announced his resignation, said that there is no need for a meeting with the district minister. "Our demand is very clear that stringent action should be taken against all individuals who deliver provocative speeches and ensure peace," he said.
