Seven-month-old baby COVID-positive in Bengal, as state reports 432 active cases as of June 4
West Bengal reported 60 fresh COVID-19 cases on Wednesday since Tuesday, bringing the total of the state's active cases to 432. On Tuesday, a seven month-old in a private hospital in Bengal tested positive. The child's mother is also symptomatic and is awaiting her test results. The state recently recorded its first COVID-19 death of the season: a 43-year-old woman from Howrah died on Tuesday after she was hospitalized with pneumonia and later tested positive for COVID-19. This marked West Bengal's first COVID-related death this year, with the state having seen a rapid surge in cases after reporting only one in the first week of May, followed by 12 more in the second week, and a sharp increase in the third, according to the Centre's COVID dashboard. Despite the rise in cases, a senior health official stated, 'We are monitoring the situation; however, there is nothing to panic about. What is important is to maintain protocol and keep sanitizing yourself to stay away from the virus.' West Bengal, as one of India's most densely populated states, faced significant challenges in managing the initial waves of the pandemic. Kolkata, its capital, recorded its first COVID-19 case on March 15, 2020. While no official advisory has been issued by the state health department regarding the current surge yet, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has initiated precautionary measures. Authorities are stepping up surveillance and testing, particularly in urban and high-density regions. Experts continue to advise mask-wearing in crowded places, hand hygiene, and booster vaccinations for vulnerable groups. Sweety Kumari reports from West Bengal for The Indian Express. A 14-year-old boy was allegedly tortured at a jeans dyeing factory in Maheshtala, South 24 Parganas, near Kolkata, on suspicion of stealing the factory owner's mobile phone, police officials said. The boy who works as a worker at the factory was allegedly hung upside down, beaten, and given electric shocks by the factory owner, Shahenshah, officials further said. A purported viral video of the incident led to police intervention, and the boy was rescued with serious injuries. 'An individual known to the main accused has been arrested and an investigation is ongoing,' an official said. The boy's family claims that he was falsely accused and they have filed a complaint. Bengal: Governor resumes duties at Raj Bhavan, outlines new outreach initiatives
Governor CV Ananda Bose resumed his duties at Raj Bhavan on Thursday after a brief hospitalisation in April and May, having been declared fit by doctors. He's now refocusing on public outreach. Notably, Governor Bose ensured administrative efficiency during his medical leave, by clearing pending files and also continued his public interaction programme — 'Aamne Samne', through which he directly engages with citizens. He also engaged in extensive discussions with senior officials, emphasising on strengthening the people-centric initiatives that Raj Bhavan has spearheaded over the past two years. Additionally, the Governor issued a series of immediate directives aimed at enhancing public engagement and administrative responsiveness. The Governor reiterated his commitment to revamping and streamlining the Raj Bhavan machinery with a 'people-centric approach' to ensure its accessibility and neutral stance for the public good. His directives outline a robust plan for Raj Bhavan, prioritising intensified public engagement through village visits, to sensitise people against violence and promote social harmony, overnight stays, and district-level outreach. In order to improve accessibility, the OSDs and senior officers will be stationed in districts, facilitating direct citizen interaction and enabling the Governor to address concerns and provide instructions. In addition, the 'File to Field' progamme initiative will involve Raj Bhavan teams revisiting villages previously covered under 'AAMAR GRAM', to assess follow-up actions and track progress. Culturally, the Raj Bhavan will spearhead the Darjeeling Hill Festival, enhance its cultural programmes, and also launch a special scheme for financial aid to heart patients. Additionally, it will host a Sanskrit Colloquium in partnership with Calcutta University. According to Raj Bhavan sources, an interactive Jan Bhagidari Portal will be launched to boost public participation. Sweety Kumari reports from West Bengal for The Indian Express. Mob barges into police station seeking ‘handover' of stabbing suspect, 10 held
TEN PERSONS were arrested after a mob of around 150 people allegedly barged into a police station in the Bangaon area of North 24 Parganas, in West Bengal on Wednesday, demanding that a man who earlier allegedly stabbed and injured four persons be 'handed over' to them. Police resorted to lathicharge to disperse the crowd, leading to the arrests. The incident took place after a 'mentally unstable' 35-year-old man went on a 'stabbing spree', an officer said. Police soon apprehended him and brought him to the station. Citing local residents, sources claimed that the stabbing suspect may also be involved in the murder of his parents. A seven-member police team has been formed to verify this claim and carry out further investigation, said an officer. Soon, a large mob, including some people who are from the area where the four people were stabbed, gathered on the premises of the police station, the officer said. 'The mob demanded that the accused be handed over to them. Police dispersed the crowd and arrested 10 persons,' said Bangaon Superintendent of Police Dinesh Kumar A search is on to nab others involved in the 'attempted vandalism', police said. Police force has been deployed in the area. In a post on X, the Bangaon police wrote, 'There is no communal angle to the incident. Request all not to heed any kind of rumours. Rumour-mongers, as always, will be sternly dealt with as per law.' Sweety Kumari reports from West Bengal for The Indian Express.
