‘From 26 million passengers to 45 million annually': Kolkata Airport's old domestic terminal to be demolished for new international facility
Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International (NSCBI) Airport in Kolkata is set for a major expansion, with plans underway to demolish the old domestic terminal and construct a new international facility. Officials said this expansion will help future-proof the airport against rising passenger demand in the coming decades and strengthen its position as a major aviation hub in eastern India. 'The current integrated terminal, spread over 222,973 square metres, is a workhorse, presently handling 8,460 peak-hour passengers — 5,500 domestic and 2,960 international. With an annual passenger capacity of 26 million (2.6 crore), this is expected to reach saturation by 2025–26,' said Dr Pravat Ranjan Beuria, Airport Director, NSCBI Airport. Demolition of the old domestic terminal is expected to be completed by the end of this year or early next year. In its place, a new U-shaped terminal will come up, initially meant exclusively for international operations. Once operational, the new international terminal will add capacity for 2 million passengers annually. To address growing passenger traffic in the interim, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has also planned an expansion of the existing terminal's international areas. The departure section will be expanded by 3,000 sq m, and the arrival section by 2,600 sq m. This 71,000 sq ft modular addition will increase total capacity from 26 million to 28 million passengers per annum (2.8 crore), with completion targeted for the end of this year. Sources at the airport said that after the new international terminal becomes operational, the existing integrated terminal, 222,973 sq m in size, will be converted for exclusive domestic use with a revised handling capacity of 34 million passengers annually. The old domestic terminal, built in 1995 with a capacity of 5 million passengers annually and a built-up area of 2.4 lakh sq ft, has remained unused for regular operations since the current integrated terminal opened in 2013. However, the building continued to serve key functions. During the pandemic, it housed a quarantine facility and later operated an RT-PCR testing centre for international travellers (2020–22). It has also been used for Haj flight operations. 'Upon full completion of these projects, NSCBI Airport's total annual passenger handling capacity — combining both the converted domestic terminal and the new international terminal — is projected to reach 45 million. Of this, 36 million will be for domestic passengers and 9 million for international,' an airport official said. Officials said this expansion will help future-proof the airport against rising passenger demand in the coming decades and strengthen its position as a major aviation hub in the region. ‘Alcohol, biryani lured crowd': Suvendu Adhikari on TMC Martyrs' Day rally turnout
West Bengal Leader of Opposition and BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari alleged that attendees at the TMC's Martyrs' Day rally in Kolkata were lured with 'alcohol and biryani' and questioned the authenticity of the crowd. His remarks came as he addressed a gathering at the BJP Yuva Morcha's 'Uttar Kanya Chalo' rally in Siliguri on the same day when the TMC held its July 21 Shaheed Diwas rally in Kolkata. The BJP Yuva Morcha-organized rally commenced from Tinbatti More, proceeded through Uttar Kanya before concluding at the Chunavati Ground in Fulbari. 'Under this scorching heat, we walked for three kilometre. We couldn't give vehicles, egg rice, or even water, yet you all chose to walk alongside us at a time when North Bengal is witnessing 40-degree temperature. I am really happy about this,' Adhikari said. 'In West Bengal, on July 21 no one can hold any programme because the queen of thieves is holding a public meeting at Dharmatala. Thousands of thieves and Rohingya are sitting in the front (row) as the CM is addressing the public,' Adhikari said. He mockingly added that 'no one will steal anything, no dacoity will take place in Bengal today (Monday), as all the goons have gathered at Dharmatala,' he said. He praised BJYM state president Indranil Khan for organising the rally on the same day as the TMC's event. Adhikari also called for the implementation of a National Register of Citizens (NRC)-like process, akin to what was seen in Bihar. 'We want a Bihar-like Special Intensive Revision to be implemented here as well. The Hindus who have come from Bangladesh are refugees. The Muslims here should not worry, but Rohingya and Bangladeshi Muslims will not be there in the electoral roll,' he said. However, at the TMC rally, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee opposed the prospect of such an implementation, stating that she would protest in Delhi if it were to happen. The BJP leader accused the state government of obstructing development initiatives, claiming, 'Modi wanted to open AIIMS in North Bengal, but she didn't let us do so.' Adhikari also said, 'If anyone wants to save Hindus, then throw Mamata out of power. People have now realized how the TMC government fooled and exploited them.' Apart from Khan, other prominent BJP leaders present at the rally included Siliguri MLA Shankar Ghosh and BJP Siliguri Organisational District President Arun Mondal. College student dies at Nicco park waterfall in Kolkata; probe on into cause
An 18-year-old college student died after falling unconscious on a simulated waterfall at Kolkata's Nicco Park on Wednesday. He was rushed to a private hospital in Salt Lake, where doctors declared him dead. According to the amusement park's authorities, Rahul arrived at around 11 am with a group of friends. Rajesh Raisinghani, managing director of the park, said they do not consider the death an 'accident', suggesting it may have been due to an underlying illness. 'Our staff suddenly saw some friends trying to bring a boy down (from the waterfall). He was found unconscious. Immediately, a wheelchair was brought in. He was first taken to primary care where the nurse found his pulse low, and suggested we take him to emergency services. By then, we had already called an ambulance. Later, doctors declared him dead. The incident took place this afternoon,' Raisinghani said. Park officials said that Rahul, along with 'four men and three women,' believed to be college students, were taking a shower on the first floor of the Niagara Falls simulation when he suddenly felt dizzy and collapsed. The Bidhannagar South police have taken charge of the investigation. Authorities are currently interviewing Rahul's friends to gather more information about the circumstances leading to his collapse. The unexpected death has reportedly caused panic and concern among other tourists visiting NICCO Park. The cause of death remains uncertain, and an investigation is on.
