YouTube Shorts gets AI image-to-video tool, new effects: Check what's new

Google has introduced Veo 2 model-powered AI tools for YouTube Shorts that transforms photos into short videos and adds effects. There is also a new centralised AI Playground hub Sweta Kumari New Delhi Google is expanding its image-to-video feature to YouTube Shorts, allowing creators to generate videos from static pictures. Beside this, the company has also introduced a fresh wave of generative AI features which it said is designed to experiment with visual effects. This includes immersive AI effects, and a new hub called AI Playground. According to the YouTube blog, all these AI features are powered by Google's Veo 2 video generation model. Google has also confirmed that it will bring Veo 3 model-powered AI tools to YouTube Shorts platform later this summer. Veo 3 is Google's latest video generation model and can also generate synchronised audio with video. Transform photos into videos The new image-to-video feature allows users to transform still images from their camera roll into dynamic six-second videos. Based on the uploaded photo, YouTube will generate a short animation such as a landscape with moving elements or a group photo brought to life. For example, YouTube demonstrated how a pedestrian signal image can change into a zooming animation of a dancing walk symbol. Google offers a similar feature in Gemini, while the Animate feature in Meta's Edits app is also capable of turning images into short video clips using AI. Image-to-video feature in YouTube is now rolling out in the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, with broader availability planned later this year. New AI effects in Shorts Alongside video creation, YouTube is also introducing new AI-based visual effects. These effects allow users to transform basic doodles into stylised images or generate short, themed videos from selfies. To try them, users can tap the 'Effects' icon in the Shorts camera, then navigate to the 'AI' section. AI Playground To centralise its creative tools, YouTube has also launched AI Playground, a new space where creators can access its latest generative AI creation tools, including AI effects, See Inspiration, and more. Users can find AI playground by tapping the create button and then the sparkle icon in the top right corner. The AI Playground is available in the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

X experiments with AI bots for writing Community Notes: Check details

X (formerly Twitter) is testing AI-generated Community Notes via tools like Grok and third-party bots, while retaining human oversight to ensure accuracy, fairness, and transparency Sweta Kumari New Delhi X (formerly Twitter) has launched an experiment to allow artificial intelligence chatbots to generate Community Notes, its user-driven fact-checking feature. The move is aimed at improving the platform's ability to tackle misinformation swiftly while maintaining human oversight for transparency and reliability. Under the new system, AI tools such as X's in-house chatbot Grok, along with third-party AI systems connected via API, will be able to draft Community Notes. However, these notes will not be published automatically. They must pass through the platform's existing multi-perspective review process, similar to human-written notes, before they can appear publicly. In a post on the official Community Notes account, X said: 'The API's goal: Make contributing to Community Notes amazing for both human contributors and developers.' The platform also stressed that any AI involvement would align with the principles of openness, fairness, quality, and transparency. According to X's support documentation, AI Note Writers cannot rate notes. Instead, only verified human contributors have the authority to assess and rate content. The AI-generated notes are intended to assist human reviewers by proposing content that may need clarification or context, but the final decision on which notes are displayed remains with human contributors. This AI-driven experiment comes as other platforms also rethink their fact-checking models. Meta recently shifted to a more community-based approach, and platforms like TikTok and YouTube have drawn inspiration from Community Notes to build their own systems. What are Community Notes Community Notes are collaborative annotations added to posts that may include misinformation, manipulated content, or unclear AI-generated material. These notes are crowdsourced from users with diverse viewpoints, and only appear publicly once a consensus is reached across groups, ensuring accuracy and neutrality.

Google Calendar lands on Apple Watch with basic features: Details here

Google has launched a simplified Calendar app for Apple Watch, allowing users to view and manage upcoming events and tasks but without creation or editing functions on the device Sweta Kumari New Delhi Google has launched a stripped-down version of its Calendar app for Apple Watch, marking its return to watchOS with a limited but functional set of features. The app is available through version 25.24.1 of the Google Calendar iPhone app. It requires watchOS 11.0 or later. Google Calendar for Apple Watch: Features The app offers a week-long list of events and Google Tasks in a scrollable, colour-coded format. Users can: Check their schedule and tasks Get notifications of events and tasks, including time, title, and location Complete tasks Respond to events Delete events and tasks Tapping on an event or task reveals minimal additional information. Users are directed to open the full app on their iPhone for further details. There is currently no option to create or edit events or reminders directly from the Apple Watch interface. The watchOS app matches the visual design of Google Calendar on Wear OS. It features a clean list view, with the current day and date displayed in the upper-right corner. However, unlike Apple's native Calendar app, it does not provide a full-month view or layout customisation options. Two watch face complications are available: What's next: shows the next scheduled event and is available as a circular or rectangular complication, as well as in the Smart Stack widget Today's date: a simple day-and-date display in circular format Both complications launch the app when tapped. While functional, the app's limited capabilities may not appeal to all users—especially given that Apple's native Calendar app already syncs with Google Calendar and offers broader viewing and interaction features. The launch reflects Google's gradual re-entry into the Apple Watch ecosystem after a period of limited presence. With only four apps currently available, Google appears to be focusing on essential viewing tools for its services rather than fully-featured watchOS applications.
