Soon Huat-Shevon off to flying start in Indonesia
KUALA LUMPUR: World No. 5 Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai got their Indonesia Open campaign off to a flying start with a comfortable win in the first round in Jakarta on Wednesday. The independent mixed doubles pair, who are also husband and wife, made light work of Thailand's world No. 112 Phuwanat Horbanluekit-Sapsiree Taerattanachai, cruising to a 21-12, 21-16 victory in just 31 minutes at the Istora Senayan. Soon Huat-Shevon are looking to end their title drought, having last stood atop the podium at the Swiss Open and Malaysia Masters in 2023. The second round will pose a tougher test, with the Malaysians set to face either Taiwan's world No. 28 Lu Ming Che-Hung En Tzu or Indonesia's world No. 25 Amri Syahnawi-Nita Violina Marwah on Thursday.

Chong Ming: Pearly-Thinaah will be better off with BAM

PETALING JAYA: The future of national women's doubles pair Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) remains up in the air, but former coach Chan Chong Ming has urged the duo to think twice before parting ways with the national body. Chong Ming, a former world No. 1 in the men's doubles, served as the head coach of the women's doubles squad in 2020 and was instrumental in guiding Pearly-Thinaah to their breakthrough title at the 2021 Swiss Open, their first on the BWF World Tour. He feels the pair should not make a hasty decision to turn professional, as they could face significant challenges on their own particularly in terms of access to the sports science support system currently available at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) in Bukit Kiara. Chong Ming pointed out that a lack of specialised expertise in sports science is one of the biggest hurdles for independent players, especially with Pearly's long history of injuries. 'As coaches, we may have the technical and tactical knowledge of the game, but when it comes to strength and conditioning, our expertise is still limited,' said Chong Ming after the closing ceremony of the Daikin Badminton Championship in Kota Damansara yesterday. 'These areas should be handled by professionals like physiologists. We can manage many things, but for these specialised matters, we need expert support. I believe the Youth and Sports Ministry could also step in to assist.' For the record, Pearly suffered a left knee injury during the 2022 Japan Open, which forced her to be carried off the court in a wheelchair. A year later, she also sustained a back injury while competing at the Hangzhou Asian Games in October. Moreover, at the All-England Championships held last March, Pearly experienced a left ankle injury while attempting a drop shot but continued playing after receiving treatment. Pearly-Thinaah's contract expired last December, and negotiations are still ongoing. However, on BAM's side, deputy president Datuk V. Subramaniam has made it clear that they will not budge on the salary package already offered to the world No. 4 pair.

She went on to play in her first professional event aged 14, finishing an impressive 13 at the Ladies Scottish Open. Booth's early pro career was highly successful and she won her first event in May 2012 - the Ladies Scottish Open. Her second Ladies European Tour triumph came the following month when she won the Swiss Open. Booth would have to wait seven years for her third LET victory, triumphing at the Czech Ladies Open in August 2019. A hugely popular player, her athletic ability and occasional unleashing of some BACKFLIPS on the course earned her plenty of fans. But her golf career has been full of frustration in recent years, with injury absolutely wreaking havoc. First of all, she required shoulder surgery in 2020 before making a return. A freak accident in 2022 saw Booth slip in her kitchen, and she felt her knee pop out. The injury required surgery and in early 2024, she underwent the knife again to undergo a reconstruction of her ACL. In those days, a return to professional golf might've seemed a distant dream but this week, it will become a REALITY for Booth. More than three years on from her last LET appearance, she's part of the field for the Tenerife Women's Open. She revealed in a social media post late last year that she was eyeing a positive 2025. Booth said in October: "I have to admit, it's been tough having surgery on both knees this year. "A constant uphill battle, but feeling positive and making great progress. "Looking forward to what next year brings." The Tenerife Women's Open is back on the LET schedule for the first time since 2011. Booth and the rest of the field will head to Abama Golf on the west side of the island. Booth has already checked in to the impressive resort for some practice. Singapore Open: Jun Hao ousts Jonatan Christie to earn slot in quarterfinals
NATIONAL men's singles player Leong Jun Hao moved into the quarterfinals of the Singapore Open after pulling off a pleasant upset by defeating world number five Jonatan Christie from Indonesia. Jun Hao, reported to be unwell before going into the match, however, won 21-16, 21-19 in straight sets after 53 minutes at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. 'Since arriving in Singapore, I haven't been feeling well, so it affected my rhythm a bit today,' he told Bernama. Not playing in the first round yesterday after receiving a walkover, the world number 25 player refused to give up even when his opponent tried to come back in the second set with more aggressive play. 'I tried to adapt as quickly as possible to the court conditions and focused on today's game. He (Jonatan) changed his game pattern in the second set, but I managed to hold on to secure the victory,' he said. The third victory out of five matches against Jonatan also saw Jun Hao reach the quarter-finals for the first time this year, after his best results previously were only in the second round (Round of 16) at the India Open last January and the Swiss Open last March. The country's sole men's singles player in the Super 750 tournament is determined to play more consistently from now on by improving his current playing style. 'Since last year my performance has been up and down. So start from this, I want to do the best,' said Jun Hao who will face world number two Kunlavut Vitidsarn from Thailand tomorrow for a semi-final spot. The reigning Thailand Open champion earlier defeated Wang Zheng Xing from China 21-8, 21-17.
