GameStop investigating customer claims that some Nintendo Switch 2 screens were damaged

Video game retailer GameStop said Thursday that it is investigating claims made by some customers that they received damaged Nintendo Switch 2 consoles. In multiple social media posts across X and Reddit, some consumers reported an issue where it appeared a GameStop in New York had stapled receipts to their Switch 2 packages and punctured the console screens. 'GameStop stapled the receipt for me and my friends Switch 2s to the box, FML,' wrote X user Oadhan Lynch, sharing a series of pictures of the product after it had been opened. 'Genuinely insane now I'm gonna have to wait 3 months for the restock. And yes we were there for the midnight release so I bet everyone in this line is gonna have this same issue.' GameStop is 'investigating this as we speak and will make the customers whole,' a spokesperson for the retailer said in an email to NBC News. By Thursday afternoon, Lynch, who did not respond to a request for comment, shared an update on X that the store had 'made things right' by sourcing 'around NY and NJ to provide replacements to everyone who this happened to.' NBC News has reached out to others who made similar claims on social media. The consumer reports, which appear to be regionally isolated, come as gamers continue to rush to get their hands on the coveted Nintendo console, which was released Thursday. The base device sells for $449.99, or gamers can shell out $499 for the console and the new Mario Kart World. Prices didn't deter fans and gamers who waited in long lines at stores across the country. The original Switch was released eight years ago, and the hype for a new console has continued to grow in recent years. But some vying to get the Switch 2 may have a longer wait than expected, with some shortages already being reported just hours after the console's official release. 'We've been working really closely with our retail partners to ensure there's ample supply for not only the launch weekend, but well beyond,' Nintendo President and COO Doug Bowser told CNBC at the midnight launch party for the product at Nintendo's store in New York's Rockefeller Center. Others online said their Walmart orders were canceled just hours before they were due to be delivered. Some said Target was still 'preparing to ship' their orders. At the launch event, Bowser told CNBC that he encourages those who weren't able to snag a Switch 2 during the preorder period to contact their local retailer, adding that the company is continuing to work with the stores 'to replenish through that launch period and all the way into the holiday period.' In its sales forecast last month, Nintendo said that it expects to sell 15 million units of the Switch 2 console in the fiscal year ending March 2026, CNBC reported. Those who were lucky enough to get the product on Day 1 of its launch appear enthusiastic about the new updates, which include a larger, crisper screen and Joy-Cons (controllers) that snap into the side of the screen.

Staten Island GameStop Stapled Receipts To Switch 2s And Punctured The Screens Because Nintendo Boxed Them In The Weirdest Way Possible

Imagine you were up at midnight to pre-order the Switch 2. You waited months for the official launch day. Then you waited again in line at midnight to be one of the first to pick it up and play the new Nintendo hardware. But as you open it, the long-awaited moment of joy turns to horror as you find that someone stapled the receipt for the Switch 2 to the box and now you have holes in the screen. That's what happened to some unlucky GameStop customers last night in a bizarre turn of events that raises questions about why Nintendo boxed the console the way it did. A thread went viral on the GameStop subreddit last night when someone shared pictures of a receipt stapled to their Switch 2 box that went through the cardboard and damaged their console. 'Midnight release went bad for me,' it read. The pictures showed the receipt stapled to the front of the box, the puncture holes it left in both the cardboard and the plastic wrap, and the ensuing dents in the Switch 2's screen. The GameStop in question was reportedly located in Staten Island, New York. Like at most of the company's stores, the midnight launch brought out tons of Nintendo fans excited to be some of the first in the world to go hands-on with the new hardware. It's unclear if the stapling was being done by everyone at the store or just one person, and how many people were ultimately affected. Other users who were at the event shared similar horror stories, though. 'GameStop stapled the receipt for me and my friends Switch 2s to the box, FML,' Oadhan Lynch posted on X. 'Genuinely insane now I'm gonna have to wait 3 months for the restock. And yes we were there for the midnight release so I bet everyone in this line is gonna have this same issue.' Another customer from the same location who faced a similar situation commiserated with them in the comments. While stapling anything to a video game console box is unnecessary and lowkey unhinged, anyone working a console midnight launch at GameStop is probably part-time and making barely $15 an hour, especially as store closures and high turnover have continued to hollow out more seasoned staff. For many employees across the company at thousands of locations, this was probably the first console launch they'd ever worked through. It was certainly the biggest. Nintendo, on the other hand, has experience not just with launching new consoles but boxing and shipping hundreds of millions of them all around the world. So it should be noted that it's equally wild that the company known for its meticulous attention to detail would box the Switch 2 with the screen facing up and only covered by 1.5cm of light cardboard. I know because I measured. I was surprised by just how exposed the Switch 2 seemed after I unboxed mine last night. The packaging is so thin that even the box falling from a certain height onto the wrong object might be equally damaging. Others were kind of horrified, too. 'You're going to hear about a few damaged screens in the coming days,' one new Switch 2 owner predicted on X. 'They are at risk just being stacked in shipping.' Maybe not. Maybe Nintendo actually did testing on the box layout and found that, for structural reasons not obvious to the naked eye, the Switch 2 remains safe from just about anything that might normally happen to it during transit, except, clearly, someone taking a stapler to it. The consoles can be replaced but the wait will be a pain for those who thought they'd finally gotten their hands on a console that would last them for another eight years. 'Totally killed the excitement of the night,' wrote Oadhan Lynch. It's worth noting that at least some Switch 2 consoles ordered directly from Nintendo came packaged in a second, much sturdier outer box, as contributing editor John Walker discovered when his arrived earlier today. GameStop and Nintendo did not immediately respond to request for comment. . For the latest news, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Screw the Scalpers: The Switch 2 Is Not Worth Paying Resale Prices

Gamers no longer have to imagine the grueling anxieties of past console launches. As we greet the sun today, it seems the Switch 2 midnight events that took place at Best Buys and GameStops all across the U.S. were relatively calm affairs. Except for a few outliers, there was little in the way of mobs driven into a frenzy for lack of stock or people huddling together for warmth for days before launch. It was calm enough; the scalpers seemed to have finally missed the boat with what is likely the biggest hardware release of the year. Those who were unlucky and failed to finalize a preorder or stake out Nintendo's new handheld in person should take this lax atmosphere as a sign that they shouldn't need to shell out hundreds extra on Nintendo's sequel Switch. Already, eBay is inundated with Switch 2 listings selling for $700 on average, $250 more than the console at its MSRP. Some listings for the system with Mario Kart World bundled in are asking for $800 or more. Even if the game costs $80 by itself, it's certainly not worth spending $300 more than what you'd spend in a store. Last night's midnight launch felt nostalgic. It's been a few years since people felt excited enough for new hardware that they were willing to hold their bladders for hours just to get a console on launch day. Stores played the game better than they have at previous events. Most GameStops and Best Buys handed out tickets to customers beforehand, limiting them to one unit per adult. Scalpers could only make their way home with a single item. For volume, scalpers instead relied on websites' broken preorder systems. It's not yet clear if scalpers made a wide dent in the overall Switch 2 supply. However, there are signs, based on anecdotes posted to Reddit and X, that most people who wanted to wrap their hungry mitts around Nintendo's new console on launch day were able to secure one. It's a good sign for those of us who didn't want to wait through the night just to play their new console come morning. Even if your local shops are out of stock, Nintendo has made inroads with Samsung to help the Japanese console maker produce even more Switch 2s going forward. If supply does run dry, you may not need to wait too long before a restock. If you do go to a GameStop to pick up a Switch 2, just make sure they're not brandishing a stapler anywhere near your device. Several customers who bought a Switch 2 found that the games retailer had stapled their receipts to their box. The Switch 2 lies relatively close to the box lid, and the staples have damaged the plastic film that sits on top of the screen. One customer who went to a GameStop in Staten Island, New York, said he received a damaged system. We reached out to GameStop for comment about damaged units and possible returns, and we'll update this post if we hear back. Nintendo bears some blame here. It made the odd decision to place the precious console so close to the box's exterior, making it more liable to damage. Either way, if you found your console was stapled, you should look to your local shop to return and replace the console. You may be surprised which still have stock. Turning to resellers is certainly not worth it. Nintendo bosses know the best way to deal with scalpers is to make enough Switch 2s for everyone who wants one. Now the folks at Nintendo just have to follow through.

Nintendo Switch 2 sales: an overnight success as UK stock shortages loom

Although there are no official sales figures yet, a series of crowded midnight launches point to the Nintendo Switch 2 being an instant hit. It's always been obvious that the Nintendo Switch 2 would be a hot commodity, with pre-orders routinely selling out over the last several weeks. And with the console officially launching on Wednesday night, it's going to be even harder to come by. As of Thursday morning, retailers like Argos and Amazon had fresh stock for last minute customers but they're already starting to run out, with no indication of when more will come in. It's too soon for Nintendo to share official sales numbers, but everything points to the Switch 2 being a big success and completely selling out, with Currys claiming they've already sold 300,000 in the UK alone. Certain retailers in the UK, the US, and Japan have kept up the time-honoured tradition of the midnight launch, and it seems those have been popular too. Smyths, for instance, held midnight launch events across its stores and photos of its Wallsend North Tyneside location show how massive a queue it attracted by the time the doors opened at one minute past midnight. Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. Meanwhile, Currys only held the one midnight launch event, at its store in Oxford Street, and despite Switch 2 sales being limited to those who already pre-ordered it, the event still attracted its own lengthy queue of fans and cosplayers. A quick look through social media shows similar results in the US, with one person on X saying that over 200 people queued up at their local GameStop. Went to the midnight release of the Switch 2 at my local GameStop. Was 43rd in line but there were probably about 140 people there so it could've been way had a little bit of trivia and a MK8 tourney before the release. Saw people I haven't seen in a bit. — ObscureReference (@ObscureisHere) June 5, 2025 As for Japan, it is unsurprisingly dealing with major stock shortages. If you recall, the My Nintendo Store already ran out of pre-orders in April, prompting Nintendo itself to apologise for failing to meet demand. According to Yahoo News Japan (as translated by IGN), other Japanese retailers, such as Toys ;R Us Japan and Don Quijote, are experiencing the same thing, only offering Switch 2s to lottery winners. At the time of writing, no sales numbers for the Switch 2 have been given. However, Nintendo has previously said it hopes to sell approximately 15 million units this fiscal year, i.e. before next April. More Trending That's a target analysts are confident Nintendo will meet, including Jefferies analyst Atul Goyal, who points to how quickly pre-orders sold out worldwide. 'In the UK, pre-orders closed down in a minute, in France the same thing and in the US there were multiple crashes online … people had to queue up overnight just so they could pre-order [in stores],' Goyal told the Financial Times. The Financial Times also reports that some analysts think the Switch 2 will perform even better than Nintendo thinks and sell over 20 million units, meaning it would outperform the Switch 1, which sold just under 15 million units in its first fiscal year. In addition, Nintendo's share price has reportedly risen 32% this year thanks to the Switch 2, which may offset the impacts of US president Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs.
